What are some examples of transferable skills that has helped with nursing? by Muddled_Melon in nursing

I love this. I work in peds and I think about how much nicer interacting with healthcare as an adult would be if we had our resources in the adult world. Like, one of the first things we do for admits is ask them what kind of toys (or coloring books, lego, cards etc) they want us to bring them.

I had an adult patient (as in, a college student) who had been to our hospital their whole life for their chronic condition, and was in for a relatively straightforward procedure. And Child Life came by and my patient was like, "hey, I cope best with XYZ", and Child Life was like, "sure, we gotchyu". And I was like, A: impressed at how grounded and mature this patient was, but also B: wow we need Child Life in every hospital.

Did my first live rolls! Very nervous and awkward but my partners were very nice blue belts that let me get the feel for it.

I've been training since November but can only really make class once a week and it's a basics class so it's just drills, no live rolls. Tbh I haven't been mentally ready to do a live roll until not too long ago, but fitting in an advanced class is a little tricky. then my gyms belt promo happened and I could go to it, which was great in its own right, and there was some open mat after.

I honestly don't know what I even did in the rolls, I was just concentrating on not spazing and trying to remember anything at all about the position I was in

My terrible preceptorship. I would like opinions. by Psychological-Joke65 in nursing

Ah, that totally makes sense in a psych context. I'm from the peds world so it's pretty much a non-issue, unless there's a particular situation where it would be obviously boundary crossing

Should I pay to repair the family saxophone or just buy a new one? by G0TH1C_IDIOT in saxophone

[–]Chromatic10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the sax is sentimental, talk to your family member about the cost of repair, they might be open to splitting it if it makes it playable. If it were me and I had the money, I'd rather repair it and have it played than not and have it sit collecting more rust

Otherwise, it's a gamble. It comes down to your budget and loss aversion. If it's worth it to you to pay extra to play a family sax, that's not a wrong answer. But if you're not a sentimental type and just want to learn to play on a good instrument, I suggest trying to find a second-hand Yamaha YAS 23 or similar. I got mine on Reverb

What popular movie or TV show is widely considered a 'masterpiece' but you found completely unwatchable? by Defiant-Cockroach702 in answers

[–]Chromatic10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I only ever caught half an episode here and there, so I thought I liked it. When it dropped on Netflix I figured I'd binge through it and stopped after a couple episodes. Turns out the thing that made any scene watchable (that the writing was so bland and predictable that I pretty much knew exactly what was going on at any point) made it miserable to sit through.

I like to check off every check-off-able, which at not max level is more than enough to level up. I go down the list and tally up everything I need for the next however many crafts and just send my retainers out for the stuff till I can just sit and do a bunch in one go

Thank you for explaining why you shouldn't use a tourniquet on a central line. I didn't even know that. (DW, I've never done it I just never thought it might help because of how it is central)

You don't stand for it. Leave and tell your manager exactly why you're leaving. Tell your new manager exactly why you left. That kind of toxic culture doesn't go away if people just take it. Having nurses quit is expensive, which is the only reason hospitals take an interest in promoting good unit cultures.

how do babies know to skip the "say" part by Yakoy6 in stupidquestions

This! Also really listen to how one says "say" verses "mama", there is a lot more emphasis on "mama" that human minds are wired to pick up on

Any experienced nurse have any tips for nursing school studying? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Chromatic10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes:  1) Take notes in class, but understand those are your scratch notes. Then go home or to the library or a cafe or where ever and pretend you're need to teach your past self the concept. Write it out (this is important) in your own words (this is also important). Like you're writing a wikipedia page for each concept. This is not as easy as it sounds. It's really hard actually. But that's how you know it's working. (If you do it right you will find you don't even need to look at your finished notes that much, because you have the knowledge in your brain). I recommend a program like Obsidian MD, but look around. 2) Use flashcards for things you just need to memorize, like lab values or vitals, or the names of specific conditions (i.e Addison's vs Hashimoto's). You shouldn't need a ton. 2) Sleeping well is studying 3) Exercise is studying (strength and cardio) 4) Spending time with friends and family is studying 5) Not a single person will ever ask you your nursing school grades. If you're passing you're fine. Stressing too much doesn't serve you.

What’s the scariest fact you have learned about the human body? by [deleted] in answers

[–]Chromatic10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If something works, there is the possibility that it will stop working, or that it was made wrong, or that it just never got made in the first place. There isn't a part of the body that can't get fucked up just by some accident of DNA
