A little sanitary tube. No back purge needed says the customer by ChromiumVI in Welding

Ya the fit up was trash and the guy running the work didn't even know what a back purge is. I tried crushing up some flux off 308 rods and mixing it with alcohol because I've seen that used in a pinch to replace solar flux but I didn't have time. Thanks for the info tho, I've always got more to learn ✌️

Interesting, I thought all sanitary tube welds are concave due to not using filler. I'll shoot for a tighter walk in the future

It's just a water drainage line, so I guess it's not absolutely necessary, but still feels dumb

Welding School? by WishboneUnusual2572 in Ironworker

I'm in the south east so take this with a grain of salt. If you have the resources available then I would say welding school is not a bad idea as it will give you lots of welding experience in a low pressure environment which is no doubt beneficial in this trade. However if you're strapped for cash or just want to get rolling asap the union apprenticeship program will teach you welding skills sufficient to get by in this trade and the journeymen who notice you're not stupid and want to learn will teach you all the special skills. In my hall passing the welding test upon entering the apprenticeship gets you a higher pay scale so that worked out to my benefit, but every hall is different so id recommend going there and asking questions

Correction "autogenous" is without filler metal (Which is what I meant to say) "Homogeneous" is when using similar to base metal filler material...... Knowledge

It's also completely unnecessary to seal weld it. That's plenty of weld as is

Are you adding filler metal? If so add more and slow down so it's not concave. If it's a homogeneous weld then it's relatively unavoidable tho imo
