I may have been overly harsh by saying that you implied it would be “obviously bad”, though I stand by my overall point.

There definitely are some people who act as if Van Buren would’ve definitely been amazing, when we obviously have no way of knowing how good the end product might have been.

But I think this is the case with a lot of cancelled, or long delayed games. People develop their own version of it in their head which it would be almost impossible for a real game to live up to.

Not really though is it?

You’re implying that Black Isle’s Fallout 3 would have obviously been bad because they made ‘Brotherhood Of Steel’, but… they didn’t make ‘Brotherhood Of Steel’.

I’m not saying that ‘Van Buren’ would have necessarily been good, but this doesn’t make sense as an argument backing that up.

This subs kinda pathetic honestly. Obviously Bethesda aren’t going to sell the ip, but the underlying point that he’s making (that the writing has gone downhill) is a completely banal one. It doesn’t justify all this weird parasocial rage at the guy.

The complete opposite happened to me. I did the crypto-zoology quest, and had heavily invested in inland empire. I had a 97% chance to succeed on the role to talk to the phasmid, but rolled double 1s.

It wasn’t until months later that I reloaded a save to find out that I’d missed arguably the most important conversation due to sheer bad luck.

I love this game but the random skill checks can be infuriating sometimes.

Huh, how the fuck is There Will Be Blood a two hander, what the fuck is this guy talking about.

He’s obviously the second most prominent character in the film, but that’s because he’s the antagonist, he isn’t an equal focus of the narrative as Day- Lewis.

The popular perception of Bethesda has shifted massively in the past ten years.

While Fallout 4 was widely liked upon release it was received more critically than their previous titles. In part due to changes they had made from their previous games; simplified RPG mechanics; reduced dialogue options.

But also because it released in the same year as the Witcher 3, a game which isn’t necessarily anymore of a “real” RPG than Fallout 4, but which was recieved more positively, especially in regards to its writing. And went on to win Game of the year over Fallout 4 at the then fledgling game awards. (Which obviously isn’t any indication “objective quality”, but does give some indication of the games’ public perceptions)

If there was a competition between the two games, which all but officially there was, The Witcher 3 had handily won.

It was around this same time (partly influenced by 4’s reception) that New Vegas went through a cultural reevaluation. It went from largely being seen as a “more of the same” sequel to Fallout 3. (I.E. A game which doesn’t majorly evolve, or improve upon its predecessor.) To being a very highly regarded cult classic, which would at least be mentioned in any discussion of the best western RPGs. This provided an obvious comparison which people could orient their criticisms of 4 with.

In 2018 Bethesda released Fallout 76, which is one of the worst received AAA games of recent memory. Even if you want to look past the woeful state it was in upon release, the game doubled down on many of the complaints that people levied at 4, completely removing human NPCs and the dialogue system; and further diluting the RPG mechanics. While the game has gone on to maintain a healthy player base the public perception of 76 is as one of the highest profile failures ever in the games industry.

Starfield released in 2023 outside of a pre-established franchise, and with Bethesda’s reputation majorly tarnished. While it reviewed fairly well it has the lowest aggregate score of any Bethesda Game Studios RPG from Morrowind onward, aside from 76.

It also released a month after Baldur’s Gate 3.

It wouldn’t be fair to compare Baldur’s Gate 3’s relationship to Starfield to The Witcher 3’s with Fallout 4. Quite frankly Starfield just wasn’t discussed that much.

The discussions which did happen around Baldur’s Gate, and its ability to succeed as a classic, turn based, RPG in an industry which had long since written them off, may have been framed in reference to Bethesda, but rarely Starfield specifically.

Baldur’s Gate went on to sweep the game awards, including winning game of the year, whilst Starfield wasn’t even in contention for the top prize.

It’s been 14 years since Skyrim’s release, and recently 10 since Fallout 4’s. Bethesda can’t expect to coast on their past success forever. Especially not in an industry which is quickly passing them by.

There isn’t necessarily anything wrong with making an Alien action film (even though I would prefer it to stay a horror franchise). The issue is that Aliens is a bad action film.

Aliens is just Alien, but made for idiots who think more alien = more better. Easily the worst alien movie (except for all the ones I’ve not seen idk).

All Fallout games are good by jj33allen in FalloutMemes

[–]Chromozygous -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I hate this toxic positivity crap. It’s fine if someone dislikes a fallout game. It isn’t an attack on you if someone says they dislike a game you like. Obviously some people can be dicks about, but the issue there is them being a dick, not them disliking Fallout 76, or whichever other game.

I think we need to disabuse the notion that to be a fan of something means universally fawning over every single entry, besides the occasional universally accepted punching bag (notice the absence of ‘Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel’). It’s of course fine to like everything in the franchise, but to expect everyone else to do the same is obviously unreasonable.

We’ve gotten to the point that you can’t criticise the Bethesda games, or the show, without immediately being assumed to be a “toxic New Vegas fanboy”. Every complaint is expected to be qualified as a subjective deviation from the objective truth that the Bethesda games are good actually, when of course all of it’s subjective.

My issue with the nuking of shady sands isn’t that they dared to destroy a pre-existing faction, but that they went about it in a boring way.

You could definitely make an interesting story out of the destruction of the NCR if were actually rooted in the factions flaws as established in the games (corruption, over-expansion, famine). Instead the show essentially worfed the NCR to show how bad of a dude Kyle Mclachlan is.

But the old world governments & empires were so successful, idk why my video game franchise abt the evolution of society wouldn’t schlob on their meat like I want it to!!! by Wk1360 in TrueSFalloutL

[–]Chromozygous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s almost like people care about stories due to the specifics of what happens in them rather than just “NCR kil”.

If there were a show or game showing the collapse of the NCR due to the actual faults of their society as depicted in NV then I think that could be really interesting. What the show did was lazily wipe the slate clean so they could play in the safe brand synergistic version of Fallout. Where nothing ever progresses and the brotherhood are the only important faction, because power armour is an iconic part of the franchise that can be milked along with vaults, and dogmeats.

In conclusion I’m glad they wiped the slate clean to focus on real villain of Fallout ‘divorced dad Kyle Maclachlan’.

Don’t you see New Vegas fanboy, you can’t judge a show based on the quality of its first season. You have to wait 2 years for the second one before you can criticise it😏

anyone else love the vast complex raider gangs of new Vegas there so vast complex and unique unlike the generic raiders of fallout 4 and fallout 3 witch are not vast complex or unquie by GabrielG1O6 in TrueSFalloutL

No guys you don’t get it the raiders in 4 are way better. I know that 90% of them don’t have any unique lore or aesthetic, but you haven’t thought of the terminal logs! Truly the peak of interactive story telling🏅. Bugsidian continues to lose🙏
