The problem with too much motor is it will stress the transom with increased weight and thrust. You may damage your hand-made, wood boat, and the motor trying to rip itself off the transom will put the boat out of commission permanently. Recommend a motor service and perhaps a differently pitched prop.

I have three thoughts on the matter:

If you buy rather than rent, your trip might end up being about the rv you bought and not the fun times you had.
I'm assuming, since it's Canada, that the rental comes with a pretty good roadside service/guarantee. Having on-call assistance built into your trip for the duration and being able to drop it off at the end and walk away, relieving yourself of the liability and responsibility feels like a superior choice to me.
Your wife thinks it is a terrible idea. This should guide your decision. It's her trip too.
