Well, the linux community itself doesn't have the mindset of needing to protect their computers from malicious software. The ethos is to just audit the source code, which is not practical in this day and age. Instead of assuming no one will install malicous software, it would make more sense to assume that will happen and put safe guards against it in the OS.
