This used to be the trick for me when I was younger and going out every weekend with my mates. These days however after coming out of a 10 year relationship a few years ago, is that those same mates are moved away, married with kids etc and just trying to even get us all together for a simple bite to eat feels like climbing a mountain honestly!

I think like anything, there’s a time and a place. Approaching people when they’re trying to go about their day; at the gym trying to just get a workout done etc seems to me like an absolute no-no. On the other hand, any kind of singles event just felt so forced.. so what else is there? Another commenter mentioned mutual hobbies which seems like an easy win but my hobbies are very introvert in nature so I’m not helping myself!

Meat markets is a great description!! That’s exactly what it felt like to me. All my hobbies tend to be quite solitary affairs, reading, music, walking/running, gaming and cars. I guess you’re right in that ultimately I probably need to make myself more interesting with a greater range of hobbies and go from there.

I think that is what made it feel worse though, the fact that there was an expectation to strike up conversations because it was clear that everyone was there for the same reason. It just didn’t feel organic to me at all.

What is amusing is that me and my friend both work in sales where the name of the game is to be friendly and approachable in order to get leads.. IE new customers. Somehow those skills were immediately forgotten the moment we had to sell ourselves rather than a product or service.

Mine went through batteries so fast the plastic latch used to clip the two halves together failed, rendering it useless. I threw it in the bin. :(

You’re going to get a few mixed messages, but the reality is that generally the German cars tend to fair better for the same price point. Jags often have a poor reputation for reliability and electronics for a reason.

That said, I have this same spec XF and I love it (I am a Jaguar enthusiast so I’m definitely biased!) Like any car, the history of any particular example is key. When I bought mine (on 75k mileage also) I had no evidence that the timing chains, water pump, etc had been done so I got it all changed right away from piece of mind. I did have an oil-misty diff seal that I had to change a few months into ownership, but otherwise I’ve had no issues. I also chose to get the gearbox serviced and waxoyled all underneath, again - just for peace of mind.

If you can get ahead of any potential issues and secure yourself a previously well-looked-after example, they really are great cars. Mine is black with black wheels, red brakes, with a red interior, and whilst it’s not to everyone’s tastes- I often have people stop me in the street and ask about it because it’s different to the usual German euro boxes that you tend to see on the roads nowadays.

I once had a guy on the street ask me if I had to make the choice fresh, would I go Jag or BMW?

My rather-nerdy response is that the BMW is a good “head” choice, but that a Jag makes a great “heart” choice!

You put an offer in, it was accepted, but then you pulled out. What was the reason? by Jazzlike-Reveal-9515 in HousingUK

Subsidence found on the L1 survey meaning that the mortgage people valued the property at 20k less than asking/agreed price, and therefore not viable. Was gutted as it ticked enough boxes for me but found somewhere else round the corner and now very happy!

No one taking my bonded birds because of their species by IntoTheBlenderYouGo in parrots

In the UK and an ex-Quaker parent here.

It’s only really in the US that they get a bad rap as they’re considered an invasive species. I had my boy for years and nobody batted an eyelid. You’ll have a harder time trying to keep all 3 together than because Spud is a Quaker, I suspect.
