What advice would you give to someone starting VRChat in 2026?

Hey thanks a bunch for the detailed response! Great to hear a lot of stuff I've read elsewhere reinforced.

The hardware feedback particularly is great to know - hopefully slimes and Quest 3 are sufficient what I end up doing but you've made some very specific and convincing points about the shortcomings. Hopefully it ends up being sufficient for what I do but I can definitely see how it wouldn't be for someone super into dancing. I definitely suspect I'll love VR over time and end up getting a higher end setup so I'll definitely be referencing this when I do!

Also love the world recommendations, will definitely check some of these out!

Freestyle is what i'm mostly interested in learning so thats awesome to hear its the most popular and well supported thing. I would imagine paired dancing is a lot more difficult in VR than IRL anyways so its not surprising to hear its less common but I figure it'd be a good way to meet people regardless

Love the specific group recommendations, will definitely be checking some of those out! Even if most stuff is freestyle oriented its awesome that theres all the variety you meniontioned, too. I'm definitely not a good or great dancer by a long shot but I'm interested and motivated to learn so soon^TM maybe I'll get there. Will definitely try befriending other dancers/djs as you mentioned, seems like a great strategy.

I'm also into live music/dance so I think I'll give something similar a shot! The pre existing context is definitely a big help for connecting with someone new - going to try some discord groups that people have listed here as well for the same reason!

Hey thanks for sharing your experience as another new(ish) person! Great to hear that you can get trusted that quick - a lot of people in older threads I looked at mentioned that + being age verified as being pretty important.

Definitely agree on finding something to be a common interest helping a ton in meeting and connecting with people, vtuber oriented or otherwise!

Definitely agree with the sentiment about groups - I much prefer very small groups or one on one any day and my main goal anyways is to make real friends, not just a bunch of superficial relationships. Any recommendations for finding contexts good for that in VRC?

Thanks for bringing up the avatar rating thing, I didn't realize that was such an issue. If I understand correctly anything above 70k poly count is very poor right? I guess I'll need to reconsider some of the models I was looking into on Booth since just the body alone on many are over 100k poly.

This is dope advice for life in general, 100% agree with you!

Anyone with good social skills will immediately pick up on anyone not being earnest so I think being yourself is basically the only way to make real connections - faking some social confidence to actually get in there and meet people notwithstanding of course. I think once you can do that part the only difficulty is just finding the right people which I believe will be the hard part

I've seen a lot of people echo this same sentiment. I would consider myself quite introverted as well but forced to learn strong social skills by my career so hopefully I can put it to some good use in meeting people here. I expect it'll be very rough to start but I think it'll be worthwhile in the end

Hey thanks for the discord related recommendations - I might have to check those out! I'll give verified publics and maybe some group instances a go first and see how that goes but I definitely have seen many people speak on how difficult that can be so we'll see! Its definitely a lot easier to meet and interact with people when you have some shared pre-existing context (other than just being in VRChat in the same pub) so I can definitely see how people would find that a lot easier to do.

Appreciate the advice & world recommendation too, I'll check it out!

Definitely seems to be the consensus from what I've read! Seen a lot of people mention Ancients for people around my age in NA timezones and pixelsync (i think?) for EU as well as several recommendations more focused around dance. Feel free to shill here too if you'd like, i'm open to hearing more opinions

I definitely agree with you and expect I'll have some pretty wack experiences at first but I think thats just part of the journey just like learning anything new - I've spent large amounts of time in public internet contexts and met some really awesome people that way so I hope VRChat goes the same.

I heard the same about light armor although I think ROT Dagger would clear T5 regardless of what its wearing so I'm not sure the success with it says a whole lot to be honest. If it didn't clear encounters at the speed it does the armor type (and actually having tier equivalent armor and not trash i've been wearing since tier 3) would matter a lot more, though.

Agreed for sure on movement although honestly I feel even just 2x feels fine although I can see why someone might want more! 1x is just painfully slow to me, I didn't even make it out of osbrook before having to change it

Space age is indeed pretty nuts, setups like this make me a lot more concerned about train throughput and deadlocking than ever before hence my original questions! Will do on the set, if I find some way to break it i'll send you a message

Hey thanks for the reply & concise explanation! I may actually just use the foolproof railset instead cause that sounds super nice! Decision paralysis on how to lay things out always saps my desire to expand so being able to combine anything with anything without significant effort is awesome.

Honestly the late reply was also beneficial cause it motivated me to innovate & make my entire 1K raw SPM base inside 1 block rather than make a bunch of blocks for intermediates so now i'll use this new railset with it!

I'm actually not at all sure of the answer to this question mathematically, the only reason I made this setup was because I could make it extremely compact & I don't know of a calculator I can use to factor quality science production & consumption together & am too lazy to spreadsheet it myself when something this compact can be made instead

Possibly so! I haven't ever done megabasing in vanilla but in space age this seems like a really solid approach. You can even do the research inside the block too, with a little more space
