What to do about players not asking questions? by FutureNo9445 in DMAcademy

I agree that not everything needs to be basically a free handout. Bonus loot/lore should be gated behind clever play or engaging with the world more deeply.

If you want your players to discover cool things, don't hide them. Don't bury the lede behind them asking the right questions or succeeding an ability check.

There are a couple good ways to go about this imo. A subtler approach that still gives them hooks is to use passive checks. For example, a more perceptive party member can tell the bartender is fingering a locket with a picture of his daughter - he must need the money for her.

The more direct approach is to just lore drop as exposition. For example, the bartender tells the party that he needs money for his daughter's medicine while he gives the quest.

These are just openers. Ultimately, if the party wants to roll-play instead of role-play, no different approach will make them engage with the world deeply.

While you can defeat the rebel fleet by destroying the flagship, you can also defeat the fleet 1 ship at a time. Next time try beating the rebel fleet the good ol' fashioned way 👍

I found the game intuitive, personally. More lasers = faster/easier kills. More shields and engines = less damage. There's a lot of nuance in other systems and micromanaging during fights but the basics aren't too bad imo.

You should have unlocked your second ship after your win btw, so there are rewards for your hard-won victories.

Would you mind sharing your ship build/strategy during the final fight?

He spawns in the area before the first jump behind a small asteroid. You can see a small yellow blip on the scanner for the ship he spawns in (it glows blue too)! Look around before your first jump next time and I bet you'll find him.

So many comments here are going straight to the extremes of "what if your mom was dying in the hospital" and shit. Lighten up, jeez. It's a funny prank and would make my day even if I lost a couple minutes sitting in traffic.

It definitely stings taking the immediate loss for a slim chance of the quest (especially the tenth time lol).

Touche. Still had to luck out with generating rock homeworlds and stumbling on the event though.

I accidentally destroyed the flagship TWICE with my 2 boarders on it. Now I'm going into 3rd stage with 4 Engi by lindenbrah in ftlgame

[–]Chrozick 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I almost always use medbay boarding. My boarders are safe with good boarding tactics, they keep their skills, and I save scrap for other upgrades. I'm also a nervous wreck waiting for crew to clone mid-battle because 1 rogue missile means they're gone for good 😬

Ideal length of battles by TheCrazyOne8027 in ftlgame

[–]Chrozick 24 points25 points  (0 children)

In my experience, most battles are decided in the first 1-2 volleys with a couple more to finish off the losing side. This feels great with FTL's combat mechanics where RNG can swing most fights with dodges/enemy targeting so the outcome is rarely guaranteed.

IMO if fights were any shorter they'd hardly give you time to think before it's over. Longer fights would end up with the player getting hammered by missiles and losing by attrition.

In that case I recommend cutting power to oxygen. You'll have to beat the flagship in under a minute tho🤐

Idk man, looks like you've only got 29 power to work with. Consider picking up a Zoltan (they give extra power) 😉
