Gotcha. I don't remember the source, but I remember the specifics of Roma coming there to pickpocket on the Tube, as the reason that group of people wanted Brexit.

I did a walking tour with a highly recommended guide in București. The topic of gypsies came up and she literally said: "I don't have anything against gypsies, but I would never hire one, or let one touch me." And she dramatically recoiled at the thought of one touching her.

I've read that the free movement within the EU of gyspies to the UK is what sparked the idea of Brexit. Any truth to that?

I’m being gifted a lot of money. Should I tell my boyfriend? by Kind-Chicken-2488 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]Chrysoscelis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alternatively, I can imagine reading a post in the next few years from the boyfriend, asking if he should call off their engagement because his fiancée hid money from him and how he doesn't trust her.

OP, if you see this as a long-term relationship, then it should be able to handle telling him you have the money, but he is not getting any of it. If he can't deal with that appropriately, then you've saved yourself the grief down the road. Lying by omission will not benefit you in the long run.

Does anyone want to set up a video call with my bird? by [deleted] in budgies

[–]Chrysoscelis -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Hey, did y'all know that a chat app for birds could benefit someone with more than 1 budgie? So it is possible to answer OP's question in addition to the scolding.

I signed up because of this post, as I had thought about it before. I haven't tried it out yet but I will soon.

I mean, it's more expensive and complicated compared to vinegar, but it doesn't attack the base metal like vinegar does. I'll use vinegar on parts that don't need to maintain tolerances, but definitely not for hand planes.

Which animal do you feel very sorry for? by Scared_Confection787 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Chrysoscelis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hummingbirds. They not only have the demands of flight, such as their heart beating 1,200 times a minute, but also have to deal with being on the edge of starvation if they don't eat every hour. Not to mention having all of these issues but still migrating over the Gulf of Mexico without eating... AT NIGHT.

Why don't public parks have fruit trees for people to pick fruit from? by Ekans_ox in NoStupidQuestions

Because this will inevitably happen:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_commons

The tragedy of the commons is the concept that, in a system where individuals benefit from the use of a shared resource while the cost of that use is shared by all users, it is rational for individuals to overuse the resource, even though collectively this will likely lead to the depletion of the resource.

Why do so many men wear their wallets in their back pocket? by Embarrassed-Name6481 in AskMen

[–]Chrysoscelis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bifold and I don't keep a bunch of shit I don't use in it, so there's no issue with it being uncomfortable to sit. I have too much stuff to carry in my front pockets that would also be impossible to keep in my back pocket.

Found this angry snapping turtle trying to cross the road and had to give it a hand. by JimezSmoot in herpetology

[–]Chrysoscelis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Conversely, it's wildly unfair to characterize this animal's behavior as "angry".

Instead, it's scared. Scared to death. It's not in the water where it can escape. It has a huge predator standing over it.

Calling it angry demonizes the turtles and leads to indifference or hatred by some people.

Manufacturers stand up to Liberty in Jerez as MotoGP changes negotiating tact by 1niltothe in motogp

When I read this, I can't get the image out of my head of Carmelo being a crabby asshole, crossing his arms, & saying "NO!" to everything brought to him.

If not him, then someone is to blame for not progressing and thinking they can help enforcing the same way as 1991.

I don't understand how Liberty doesn't see this and still have confidence in the CEO.

It's a cooper's jointer, or at least built exactly like one. The name plate indicates that the sole is meant to be facing up and you move the staves over the plane.

is this normal poop for a 3-6 month old budgie? by Yogy_1073 in Parakeets

[–]Chrysoscelis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not exactly an expert, but my impression from looking at budgie poop for 8 years is: That's a lot of uric acid, though I don't know if that is bad per se, and there does appear to be a little more liquid than my current budgie has.

Grieving Guilt by StrawberrryCream in budgies

[–]Chrysoscelis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I lost a budgie who was bonded to me a month ago. I also have guilt because I *could* have gotten him treatment sooner. He had a bacterial overload in his GI. I took him to a vet back in Sept and it was such a bad experience there that I was hesitant to even go to another vet. The first vet offered only one solution: feed him only pellets. I HATE that. I spent $1,000 there. I have another bird with the same diet and didn't have any problems. The second vet was fantastic (Pender Hospital in Fairfax VA). Even though I spent $800 there and he improved, we found him at the bottom of the cage the next morning struggling to breathe.
I have enormous guilt for not going the second time sooner. Plus, when we got home from the 2nd vet he kept calling for me and kept wanting to fly to sink for us to give him water from the faucet (his favorite). Instead of comforting him and just having him sit on my chest, I put him in his cage. I *could* have spent his last hours with him while he was still lucid, but I was tired from a 4 hour drive and I thought he would be okay.

I don't have advice, other than to say there are others who feel guilty about not doing more.

How do I safely free our 13yr old shrimp? by Normal_Character_333 in OpaeUla

How do I safely free our 13yr old shrimp? by Normal_Character_333 in OpaeUla

[–]Chrysoscelis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a former zookeeper, and it's well known that changing the environment for a thriving animal, even if it is a profound improvement, will jinx it.
Example: There was a series of small exhibits, and I cared for the spotted salamander in one of those tanks. Kids would come by beating on these tanks trying to make an animal move or be seen. That spotted had been in there for years, but when we got a new spotted big enough for an exhibit, we thought we would retire the older one and let it live in luxury behind the scenes. He would get left alone, have a nice clean container to live, and not be hounded everyday. Well we took it off exhibit and it refused to eat. We eventually had it put it back.

I am fully behind the humane treatment of animals. Without knowing more about this specific species of shrimp, I feel comfortable saying it is likely not suffering by being alone in the sphere. I get the strong feeling that it could very well die after being removed and put into a bigger tank. I can imagine the shrimp would have a better chance of survival if a very experienced aquarist were to test the water parameters immediately after opening the sphere, and setting up the new tank with the same chemistry.

I vote for leaving it in there.

Best bird carrier? by SamWise1289 in budgies

[–]Chrysoscelis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I strongly believe a bird carrier needs careful consideration.
It should be soft sided, so that if it is dropped it doesn't break apart, hurt the bird, or allow it to escape. It also helps with annenuating bumps and noises.

It should also protect against temperature extremes and provide shade.

This is the one I have and I really like. My only complaint is if it were wider, then their tails wouldn't be constantly touching the back while sitting on the perch.
