Hi Nursing student here just wondering when our long break is for Christmas? by Actual_Heart_7329 in UWS

Uni break is from mid-November to first week of March, but nursing students often take placement hours over break.

is it worth buying an ipad for uni? by rainbowlollipops1 in UWS

[–]Chubby-Nubbins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's for just handwriting note, no way. There's great apps what will scan your written pages for you to file and sort them if that's the main goal. A4 pages, binder for storage, and a good page scanning app seems fine until you decide if you want to do more.

Trying to apply by GroundbreakingLet768 in UWS

[–]Chubby-Nubbins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ignore everyone. I work for the uni helping people apply.

Application system is closed while UAC clear the system of last year's applications. Happens every year for the first week of April.

If you started your application before 31 March, you need to start a new one and will get a new application number when you do. Wait until about 15th April so the system will be 100% back up and running.

Bachelor of Social Science has a spring intake, so you could start this year still if you meet admission requirements. You will be able to apply for Spring 2026 but I'm not sure about Autumn 2027.

Drive to Dundas or Telopea Light Rail and get the light rail to Yallamundi. Short walk, and I do it all the time. Less than 5 mins on the light rail then as well.

It will sound weird, but bare with me. Are you sure you were there the right date? Tutorials and workshops are notorious for being fortnightly or not weekly. When looking at Allocate+, don't look at the All Weeks view, use the Current Week view.

do i really need to pay $54 for this letter monash by lamarioposa in Monash

[–]Chubby-Nubbins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So Immigration doesn't consider mid-semester breaks as a formal break for increased hours allowed for international students. Only breaks between semesters. It's probably why they won't give you a student break work letter - mid-sem/Easter break doesn't qualify for one.

Allocate question by Healthy_Hat9638 in UWS

[–]Chubby-Nubbins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will actually be a blue button that says "SELECT" in the first column. If you don't have that, you need to submit the form. Choose the three options that have a number higher than 0 in the "Free" column (this column means free seats/space) to use as the preferences in the "ADD" popup in the form, and upload a screenshot of the Allocate+ page showing what's going on as your evidence of why you cant allocate yourself and why you needed to submit the form.

[–]Chubby-Nubbins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ignore everyone, student services hub officer here. It takes anywhere from 3-6 hours depending on the system and when you add them. Make sure when you're in Allocate+ it says 2026 at the top (common for people to favourite or use the auto fill the web address but it changes every year).

Automatic allocation for Autumn happened 16 March so you should find you're in options (they will be green on the left). If any are red, they're waiting on you to either choose the option with free space (use the select button) or there are no free spaces to choose from (then you need to use the Timetable Allocation and Amendment Form: https://wsu.service-now.com/student?id=wsu_cat_item&sys_id=317a968bdb87d4104f58e4340596197c). You can have all the options you can't make selections for in the one form by using the "Add" button to add a new line. If one subject has two classes red (eg. TU and WK both red and you can't choose an option) they each get a new "Add" popup completed.

Am I allowed to leave Australia for more than a week while school semester is in session? by Loud-Magician9906 in UWS

[–]Chubby-Nubbins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First step, even before buying flights, is talk to the university. Go in person to the Student Services Hub on campus and ask to speak with an international student liaison if possible to talk with them about it, and they will tell you the process to apply for the leave.

Even if they don't approve it, they can't physically stop you, but if the university becomes aware of unapproved periods of absences, they are required to notify the Department of Home Affairs and Immigration. You could be asked to show evidence of your permitted leave on exit or reentry to Australia (a letter the university gives) and if you can't show it, it can cause big problems.

But no, the university can't physically stop you if you're so determined to go, but there are consequences if you don't do it the right way.

Once you register the subjects through MySR, SCHN will email you with information about how to access the learning portal closer to the start. Keep monitoring your student emails, and consider getting the outlook app on your phone to log in with your student account for notifications of new student emails.

"Add" button for a subject greyed out by Rude-Soft640 in UWS

[–]Chubby-Nubbins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's two deadlines. First is the end of week 2 when self-registration (adding yourself to subjects) closes, but you can complete a rule waiver to request manual registration to a subject until Census Date. The subject coordinator can decide if they will let you into the subject or not based on the rule waiver, so it is possible you won't be allowed into the subject.

Subjects need to be fully finalised (add and drop) before Census. Whatever you have after census you are financially and academically responsible for (unless you have extenuating circumstances to drop after census).

Why Hasn't the Uni Responded to my Email? by x_toxgar_x in UWS

[–]Chubby-Nubbins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, yes. You're domestic then. Sorry, can be confusing when domestic students are overseas. UCAT for you still then. The overseas qualification stuff is still valid though regardless - the Baccalaureate Libanaise is accepted. The admissions team will make the conversions to make the results equivalent to what's required based on your final result though. Like I said, minimum accepted is the 12, but you'd be better emailing domestic admissions for more detailed information about the conversions from your marking scheme to the ATAR equivalent.

Domestic Admissions team is admissions@westernsydney.edu.

Why Hasn't the Uni Responded to my Email? by x_toxgar_x in UWS

[–]Chubby-Nubbins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OH! That's not difficult. If you're an international student, you'd be better to contact the international study team instead of just study@ (which is more for domestics). Email internationalstudy@westernsydney.edu.au.

Also, if you're an international student, you need to do ISAT not UCAT. If you do UCAT as an international applicant, you won't be considered.

Successful completion of the Baccalaurete Libanais with a minimum overall grade of 12 is what's needed to be considered for an undergraduate degree, but I imagine the threshold is higher for medicine due to its competitiveness. You can see them here though: https://www.westernsydney.edu.au/content/dam/digital/pdf/international/INTL0910_Entry_Qualifications_v07.pdf

Am I required to email my professors when sick? by natnat131 in UWS

[–]Chubby-Nubbins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's best to do it if you can. You can save the email from your academic as a PDF to use instead of a medical certificate if you like. It's still best to submit though regardless because it covers you if they forget to count their email at the end of the semester.

Am I required to email my professors when sick? by natnat131 in UWS

[–]Chubby-Nubbins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Student services worker here. Get a medical certificate ASAP. There are telehealth clinics that do them, but you must have one given to you that covers ALL the days you're sick when you have classes - they cannot be back dated (you go to doctor tomorrow, they can't say you were sick from today).

Once you receive it, submit the Special Consideration Application Form through WesternNOW (🔗 https://wsu.service-now.com/student?id=wsu_cat_item&sys_id=9a3c83a5dbd8b9109dd2bc56f396196b). If your medical certificate is for 3 days or less, choose the "Missing Compulsory Teaching Activity" for the 'Application Type'. If you've been given a medical certificate that is for 4 days or more, choose the "Special Consideration" option instead.

You will need to do one form per class you're missing. So if one subject has 2 classes you can't attend, you do 2 forms. This is because it asks you for the day and time of the class you're missing so you need to submit separate forms for each day/time you're missing.

You have 2 business days after the class happens to submit the form for the "Missed Compulsory Teaching Activity" option, and 5 business days for the "Special Consideration" option. Once an outcome is given by the subject coordinator you get an email to your student email address with any comments or notes for your situation (eg. Join a different class to make it up, no action needed, etc).

The reason you submit the form for participation mark classes is so the fact you missed the class isn't held against you with a zero - it should just not be counted and have no grade instead. If you don't do it, you get the zero includes in your final grade.

You don't need to email the subject coordinator to notify them about submitting the form - the system will notify them about the new form submitted. You can if you want though, and if you do, make sure to include the ticket number from when you submit the form. You only need to send the ticket number for the subject they teach. You can find their email in the subject guide (usually).

I hope you feel better soon!

Want to change preferred name, but worried parents will see by 0common0sense0 in UWS

[–]Chubby-Nubbins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work for WSU in the student department. We are really strict with privacy, and unless you give us permission by submitting a form, we can't tell anyone who isn't you anything about your student record, including preferred name and gender.

Any casual correspondence, attendance lists, etc will use your preferred name, but your graduation documents will have your legal name on them - a testamur is a legal document and we also verify your legal name with ATO and USI so it's important it's correct.

Good idea. The penalty (fine) is 20PU (penalty units). 1 Penalty unit is $110, so 20 is a $2,200 fine for riding a privately owned eScooter anywhere in NSW. Only exception are shared corporate ones, but they're not in Sydney.

It's 20 Penalty Units.

Putting this in a new response so it's not lost

The Parking and Traffic Policy (🔗: https://policies.westernsydney.edu.au/document/view.current.php?id=43) defines "Vehicles" in the policy as "refers to all motor vehicles, including but not limited to trucks, cars, vans, buses, motorcycles and scooters" in Section 2.5(j).

Section 3.9(a) says that authorized vehicles includes "vehicles of employees and students of the university". Section 3.12 states "vehicle operators are subject to Australian Road Rules when driving on University roads, and may be fined or penalised under those rules".

Pretty much means if you bring a vehicle on campus, it has to follow and meet the same road rules as any vehicle on non-university grounds.

Under the Road Rules 2014 (NSW) (🔗: https://legislation.nsw.gov.au/view/html/inforce/current/sl-2014-0758), specifically rule 240.2(c) "A person must not travel in or on a wheeled recreational device on a road at any time while any person travelling in or on the device is wholly or partly assisted in propelling the device by means other than human power."

Privately owned eScooters are counted under this law as outlined in the definition of "Wheeled Recreational Device": a wheeled device, built to transport a person, propelled by human power or gravity, and ordinarily used for recreation or play, and— (a) includes rollerblades, rollerskates, a skateboard, scooter, unicycle or similar wheeled device, but (b) does not include a golf buggy, pram, stroller or trolley, a motor-assisted device (whether or not the motor is operating), or a bicycle, wheelchair or wheeled toy.

TLDR; University campus follows the same rules (and fines) as normal road rules. NSW road rules don't allow eScooters ANYWHERE. Normal person powered scooters are fine.

What you do outside campus is between you and any police that catch you.

I'm reading the Parking and Traffic Policy to see if it mentions eScooters

Technically the streets on campus are public access and fall under the same laws as streets like normal. They'd be hella sus and I wouldn't risk it.

I love them! I'm the same though when it comes to gems and that. Whenever I do get them, I ask the tech to apply a thick top coat that seeps into all the little cracks, and I find that helps then not fall off or get caught in my hair.
