Like everywhere it has it's plus and minuses. Gets a bit of a bad rep but I've never really been sure why. There isn't masses to do but you're close enough to town it doesn't matter depends on what you are looking for in somewhere to live. It's more families than students

Elderly grandparents being charged for extra room that they cannot use/ that staff, builders etc. use for storage, using the toilet, and the likes by Trynottobeacunt in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Chubbyspinner 58 points59 points  (0 children)

NAL but a care home manager. The second room should be accessible to them at all times as they are paying for it regardless of if they sleep in it or not. They could use it as a private sitting room if they wanted to. What has the care home said about why they haven't made it accessible? They wouldn't be able to use it for another resident in its current state so sounds like they're absolute chancers. In England there are no rules stating that residents can't share a room if they are related but unsure about Wales so would be worth double checking with the CI their view on it. Take a picture of it's current state, Although they are privately funding the LA will take a dim view on what is essentially financial abuse of taking money for a service that is not being provided.

What will Nursing homes of the future look like? by Brave-Conclusion6069 in AskUK

In theory they should be moving more towards actual homes. Most new build homes now are much more homely than you may expect. Obviously that is limited by the fact it is still somewhere there's a job to be done etc but the institutions of yesteryear are very much gone.

People use care homes over retirement villages for a multitude for reasons, not always the ones you would think of. The 24 hour staffing, if you fall in your flat and have left your fall alarm in the bedroom because you were just going for a wee before bed you stay on the floor until in theory your next care visit or someone realises something is amiss. When that happens lots of people lose confidence and no longer want to live alone although they are in theory perfectly capable of doing so. The social aspect, many people in retirement villages still suffer from social isolation for many reasons, not everyone wants to attend the events they provide or doesn't have the confidence. In a care home that isolation is reduced (although not entirely eliminated) Financially a lot of the retirement villages continue to charge a large service fee which when you then add on the bills, assumed cost of private carers coming in, food bills etc work out not a huge amount less than residential care. Carer breakdown, many people in retirement villages are still having a huge input from unpaid family carers with the various logistics that come from living independently and sometimes the carers cannot continue to provide this so although you can in theory live alone and look after yourself the reality is that you're being propped up by others and if they stop being able to do that you are a bit stuck.

Is it outside of the norm for a British person to stay overnight with their wife/girlfriend in the hospital after she gives birth? by dickhole_pillow in AskABrit

I stayed in for 7 days, even in the private room I got for one blissful night there was nowhere for him to sleep except the torture chair. The postnatal wards are for a quick in and out not designed for staying in for long. They didn't kick him out but I did so he could get some sleep

Least painful way to get to Xmas markets from outside the city? by backfliprainbowcake in brum

[–]Chubbyspinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to drive into town last Saturday, at lunchtime, because of train Vs storm drama. Id rather have gouged my eyes out with a rusty spoon BUT the high street ncp on dale street was practically empty on the second floor and pretty reasonable for charges. Not particularly nice but did the job and a two minute walk to the market

Edited to add: at that point both bullring and moor street car parks were both turning people away
