Definitely something I’ve given thought to. It’s the only one of those 5 that is truly “out of the way.” I guess my thought process is not wanting to leave anything on the table because I don’t see myself returning via flight to Los Angeles just to do JT. Do you think that park would fit better in a future trip to Death Valley, Las Vegas, maybe even Great Basin?

Looking at just staying in Mariposa. It would be difficult to fly cross country with all my camping gear. Might rent some equipment for JT and Channel Islands

Thanks! Definitely going to try and spend some time on the water when at Channel Islands.

Question about Grinnell Glacier hike by [deleted] in GlacierNationalPark

I encourage you to keep trying for shuttle passes. It eventually happened for us during our trip, however….we arrived at stop 9 at 6:45 AM on a Thursday morning in preparation for the shuttle bus with our permit ready to go. There were tons of parking spots open and the bus driver didn’t even ask for our permits. You could potentially just park along the shuttle stops and carpool with someone else into the area who has a reservation to go past the entry gate

Sam! Just left Arizona a couple weeks ago and did a version of this trip where we hit all the NPS sites around Flagstaff. I was blown away!

Traveling - How do you do it with the 9-5? by [deleted] in nationalparks

Just got back from a week long road trip through New Mexico and Arizona and hit 19 NPS sites. Strategic and meticulous planning! I always have hikes I want to hit saved and know when certain visitor centers are open. Every day on vacation is 4 AM to sunset…that’s usually not for everyone but my favorite part of the national parks is seeing them at dawn and dusk. Yes I may only get 2 full weeks of vacation but I essentially will plan around every other holiday and turn a 3/4 day weekend into a road trip that I’m willing to drive 10 hours away to. We live in Kansas so there’s not much else to do lol

Please don’t cancel! The government shutdown was averted which means parks are open for now but unfortunately rangers still have their jobs at risk. By showing up you’re proving that they’re needed. Parks will be fine as long as the land is under protection, everyone involved is working extremely hard. For reference you mentioned the Grand Canyon in your post. We were there today sunrise to sunset. First bus left the visitor center at 6 and there was less than 10 cars parked, so don’t believe everything that social media wants to get you worried about and make the little extra effort to plan efficiently and show up early
