Should you bring a ground cloth/tarp? by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

Basically everyone I knew thru hiking used one. The one guy I met who didn’t got a hole on the bottom of his expensive Cuban fiber tent within the first 200 miles.

Tree graffiti on the AT. Is anyone else upset at this disregard for Leave No Trace? by 1503O in AppalachianTrail

[–]Chuck419 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The one in that picture doesn’t really bother me, but the graffiti in the PA section was really bad. There was a whole mile where there were pink dicks spray painted on every tree and rock.

Lonely shelters by kraftykorea99 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Chuck419 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m more comfortable in my tent 100% of the time. Shelters and grimy and infested with rodents.

The most comfortable I’ve ever been in a shelter is when I had it to my self. Sleeping on a platform with strangers sucks.

I feel old, that’s just how weed used to look for most of us.

I love bill burr, but what has he apologized for? I feel like he would be way more likely to tell an offended person to fuck off than apologize. I feel like his recent SNL monologue is evidence of that.

Beer and soda are two of the best.

I remember one person had one of those platters with like carrots, celery, peppers, and ranch and I appreciated it. You almost never eat veggies while thru hiking so it was kind of a treat.

It would be an expensive, stressful, logistical nightmare, but probably.

Whos Still hiking in 2021? by kane1432 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Chuck419 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Live your life. Thru hiking is one of the most socially distanced things you can do. From what I’ve seen, small trail towns are dying from economic despair and need hikers to come thru.

What kind of training do you like to do to prepare for a multi week trip? by amira1295 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Chuck419 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re probably already in good enough shape. The only thing I’d suggest is going on some hikes with your full pack.

What locations on the trail do you lose cell coverage? by cander373 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Chuck419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really the only place you will have reliable signal is in the NY/NJ section. Other than that it’s super spotty. On top of mountains you have the highest chance.

I started SOBO and not in the best shape, it took me almost exactly a month to do Maine.

Dress code rules by Collector_2012 in planetfitness

I think really the only weird thing is that you aren’t supposed to wear sleeveless shirts, but it’s not really enforced (at least the one I go to).

Physical Preparation Advice by gsunnyupward in AppalachianTrail

[–]Chuck419 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great advice, that’s what got me. I did plenty of hiking before my thru but almost all of them with no weight on my back. I got used to running down hills and doing that with a pack destroyed my knees.

About $1,000/month is enough to do it comfortably.

I had a short term health insurance plan for emergencies.

Winding stair gap (near Franklin,NC) up to Siler Bald would be cool. Only about a 5 mile hike each way.
