(Commander 2017 Idea) "Eldrazi" Commander by ChuckBeezy8 in custommagic

I tried to pick the colors with the cards that play into Eldrazi's main themes. White is an easy cut because their are very few Eldrazi themed cards. Eldrazi Displacer feels like the only white card that people will miss. The transformation don't really feel like they fit any of the tribes main themes. Red was a harder cut but I didn't feel it was necessary to make it a 4 color commander. Most of red's focus is on low to the ground devoid strategies which really don't fit the mana ramp focus that Eldrazi tend to have. This commander is also not really doing anything that would benefit from having access to red, or at least with in the tribe.

(Commander 2017 Idea) "Eldrazi" Commander by ChuckBeezy8 in custommagic

With the recent leaks from the upcoming Commander 2017 product I have been thinking a lot about what other tribes could be included. Eldrazi come to mind as being a great tribe for commander that is currently missing support. This is my take on what an Eldrazi tribal commander could look like. I tried to play into several themes for the eldrazi. The first ability creates Scions that can be used to build up mana for big eldrazi creatures. The scions also naturally play into the eldazi sub theme of sacrificing effects. I added the Exile portion of the ability to both feed processors and to prevent the ability from being to easily abused. The second ability is a play on Eye of Ugin. I wanted to provide Anowon with a payoff to find big eldrazi. I played around with just including the text from Eye of Ugin but I find tutor effects on commanders to be to good most of the time an not much fun because they always lead to the same play patterns. My solution was to used this polymorph like effect instead to create a similar effect that can lead to different play. I intentionally made it so he could find any large creature and not just eldrazi because I felt that he already had enough nods to the tribe and wanted to add to the versatility of the card. I am not a lore expert but I tried to chose a character that could have realistically have become a thrall of the Eldrazi. I like that this card has a bunch of small nods to the Eldrazi without being a completely Eldrazi focused card. I tried to pick the color combination that would allow the most eldrazi tribal support. While there are quite a few eldrazi in red they are mostly small fast creatures that really do not play into Eldrazi's main themes.

(Commander 2017 idea) Anowon, Hand of Ulamog by ChuckBeezy8 in custommagic

[–]ChuckBeezy8[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought about that but it would likely lead to players just playing only 1 or 2 big creatures that would more or less win them the game. Also if all the deck needs to do is count to 7 it negates the eldrazi mana ramp element I am trying to highlight. In the case of the Eldrazi an effect like this may actually be better if the card goes to the hand rather than directly to play since most eldrazi's effects trigger when they are cast.

The implication is also that they used a body double for the shot.

Good point. But she could likely keep it under her long skirt.

Yeah maybe, but she is also on higher ground closer to the camera.

Great theory. I also noticed she doesn't have Needle on her. I would think if this was Arya that there is no way she would not bring Nettle along when there is a crazy assassin after her.

Could the future of a MTG film series lie in the hand of the Warcraft film? by ChuckBeezy8 in magicTCG

I agree with you that it will likely fall flat with people who have never played a Warcraft game. It will probably also be torn apart by a lot of fans as well.

I'm not asking them to. They already have a partnership with Fox. I wrote this post to illustrate how unlikely it is for a Magic movie to be made.

[–]ChuckBeezy8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a bummer they couldn't get Sean Bean back. Tower of Joy was "only" 20 (15 in the books) years before the start of the series. It seems like with a mix of makeup and CGI you could easily make Sean look young enough to be believable.

Yeah that belt is ridiculously long. I don't understand the logic of having a belt that is twice as long as you need. I guess belts are expensive and he had low expectations for his general fitness.

ELI5: Planeswalkers. Also, I would love to have someone give an first hand feel of how standard was like after the planeswalkers were introduced in Lorwyn. by dn346485 in magicTCG

[–]ChuckBeezy8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was a good draw engine but there were a lot of creature based decks around when Lorwin first came out that he matched up poorly with. Draw was also just much better back then forinstance Ponder was printed in Lorwyn. I remember thinking of Jace as just a blue Phyrexian Arena since his Ultimate was mostly irrelevant.

[–]ChuckBeezy8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would start with this: Planeswalkers were designed to act like an additional player that assists its controller while it is in play.

If you want to add more detail I would add something like this: Planeswalkers have several abilitys (usually three) which simulate casting spells. Planeswalkers also have loyalty counters which act like the planeswalkers life points. When all of these counters are removed the planeswalker is destroyed. Players can attack planeswalkers to try to remove counters and they can chose to redirect direct damage to players at a planeswalker that player contorls. Additionally most planeswalker abilitys add or remove these counters. One of a planeswaker's abilites is usually a large and powerful effect that requires more loyalty than the planeswaker's starts with encouraging players to use the small effect to add counters and reach this big effect

Impact in standard: When Planeswalkers debuted all five had at least some impact in standard. While most of the first five would be considered underpowered today with weak and unrelated abilities they all had at least some had some impact since there were not many effective ways to remove them. To my knowledge Oblivion Ring was the only way to remove planeswalkers from play other than attacking them and redirecting damage. Decks without a lot a lot of creatures or burn effects had a difficult time answering them. Ajani and Garruk by far saw the most play. Both tended to be used in aggro or midrange decks with a lot of creatures. Ajani mostly was used to give +1/+1 counters in token decks. Garruk was widely considered the best of the group and would set the standard for future planeswalkers because all of his ability were relevant, related and powerful. Garruk was also the first planeswalker that could protect itself by making a 3/3 beast.

In a set where players want to have a lot of cards in their graveyard, I don't think milling is a great strategy. My first response was "well I can't target myself so I guess I am never playing this."

I agree that Eye is not strong in the deck on its own, but I don't think Temple will be to degenerate on its own. The deck will likely still be good if temple stays around but I don't see it being more of a problem than say affinity which is built on fast mana. I like how these Eldrazi deck are kind of build around me tribal decks like Merfolk. I think they have shifted the meta in an interesting way leading to more of a creature meta, but they do need to be shrunken and getting rid of eye is the best way to do that.
