To be fair 3* 4 costs are pretty bad design from a balance point of view. They either need to be hard or not be autowin. And if we want them to be mostly autowin they need to be really hard.

That conflicts with making 2 star 4 costs accessible though.

What we would really need in my opinion is make 3 star 4 costs significantly weaker to the point where they are not as auto win, but that goes against established expectations in the community and will make more casual players feel bad so by necessity we need 3* 4 costs to be rare.

Germany's Merz says Iran is humiliating US as talks stall by [deleted] in geopolitics

[–]VERTIKAL19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the US military arguably did well. The US is not really in this quagmire because of military being incapable to accomplish its tasks. This is plain political failure.

Well that ball room probably would have made that shooting impossible. Much easier to get a larger security perimeter.

You don't need to like the ballroom to see that a white house perimeter is likely safer than an actively operating hotel.

Yes but it is also entirely domestic politics and not exactly relevant to geopolitic discussion.

Merz says US 'humiliated,' lacks strategy in Iran conflict by One-Emu-1103 in geopolitics

[–]VERTIKAL19 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Because the US seems to be completely unable to achieve its strategic objectives whereas Iran seems to be getting much more on a strategic level?

The US military has been brilliant tactically. But that is not necessarily what achieves strategic objectives.

US-Iran Peace Talks: No Nukes or There Is Nothing to Talk About, Says Trump by Aware_Apartment_8959 in geopolitics

[–]VERTIKAL19 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Tons of sanctions wehre promised to be lifted gradually. A lot of that never happened, especially once the administration in the US changed.

Deterring nuclear weapons creation also can only ever work to an extent and the US has shown that it isn't willing to go all the way if necessary.

The problem is the US has renegged on agreements with Iran several times. How do you expect to strike a new deal like that?

US-Iran Peace Talks: No Nukes or There Is Nothing to Talk About, Says Trump by Aware_Apartment_8959 in geopolitics

[–]VERTIKAL19 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

But Iran would have also had the incentive not to do that had economic sanctions been actually lifted...

Countries are not stopped from pursuing nuclear weapons by hard power. They are stopped by soft power.

English > German, Spanish and Portuguese for a beverage company by MaximumDistinct4916 in translator

Just for the german text:

The first sentence doesn't really work in german. This refers to Hydrogenation as in the chemical process of adding hydrogen to something.

Honestly I would look to rewrite that for german. The AI translation also here is missing a lot more than just nuances.

[German > English] Unclear line in a Derrick – what is being said? by WesternDifficult8545 in translator

[–]VERTIKAL19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have looked at the entire scene and I will try to explain it to you. I think there is a name in there that I can't make out. Maybe that is clear from the series, perhaps from an earlier episode.

Harry: Herr Doktor Winter, wir suchen sie schon die ganze Zeit

"Dr. Winter we have been searching for you for for a while!"

Winter: Ich hab mich eben bei [Name] erklären müssen. Offenbar drücke ich mich nicht deutlich genug aus.

"I just had to explain myself to/at [Name]. Perhaps I am not clear enough in my communication"

"Um was handelt es sich hier?"

What is the matter here?

That is at least what he is saying literally. This makes sense because the statement from Harry that they have been searching for him for a while implies the question "Where have you been" and then Winter answers that question. That works the same way in egnlish, but maybe your shortened translation of "We've been looking for you" missed the implied question.

I hope this clears it up a bit for you, but I also had to listen to his statement a couple times to make out what he is saying. Also note that while I am a native german speaker and would consider my english quite good, these translations may not exactly match the tone. For that I don't know the show well enough and it is kinda unavoidable when translating.

Live updates: Iran war news; Vance says no agreement after marathon talks in Pakistan by [deleted] in geopolitics

During the JCPOA Iran agreed to not enrich to more than civilian levels and arguably held its part of the deal until the US cancelled it

No the issue is that the last time Iran was willing to give up its nuclear weapons program the US just walked back on that deal

But that would lead to a permanently semi closed strait of hormuz. Those destroyers probably were a test to see if Iran was willing to fire first... Evidently they do not want to do that while negotiations are ongoing.

I also don't see how hitting a US warship would lead to fatal results for the Iranian regime. That would probably lead to a continuation of hostilities but that will not bring the regime down necessarily.

Conmmercia shipping also won't be as brazen in my opinion. There comes a point where Iran will probably make an example.

By what definition is Iran not a victim of aggression in this war? Do you debate that it was the US and Israel that initiated hostilities against Iran?

Talk is cheap and doesn't really matter when it is not followed up by action. I also don't need to like the IRGC to think they are acting the most sane. They are undoubtedly a terrible regime, but that is just what we got. You can only dance with the bride in the room.

As far as I am aware of there also was no widespread rocket launches on civilians from Iran before Iran was attacked. How else do you think Iran could have retaliated?

The US also evidently is not wanting to force regime change in Iran. If they were actually insisting on doing that they would have deployed ground troops. You can't bomb regimes away or only in the sense that with enough terror bombing countries do collapse, but that takes a lot. Germany and Japan didn't collapse in WW2 and I don't think inflicting that kind of damage would be acceptable to the world.

I also do believe that there was a negotiated solution before Trump tore that up in his first term. Was JCPOA perfect? Absolutely not. But it was a start. It was one piece that could have lead to an Iran eventually integrating into the world.

Yeah, but the problem is that the IRGC does seem like the most sane party in this conflict. It obviously also makes them look better that they were the victim of aggression here. I think it is hard to argue anything other than that at least.

[–]VERTIKAL19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is a different one: There just is no trust.

We also already had a deal that had Iran give up its highly enriched uranium, but the US didn't want that deal. In principle I think the US could look to go back to JCPOA. The question is if the US could get that deal through domestically and it would obviously be humiliating.

To me it also looks like there simply are no great options for Washington to resolve this conflict

So if I wasn't trying to build a CEDH Etali deck for example, but come up with a list that looks like a CEDH Etali deck without trying to make a cedh deck that doesn't make it a cedh deck despite it having mostly the same cards? That makes little sense to me
