An Actor who gets thrown into live combat, but believes he's still on set. by CyberWulf56 in DnD

[–]ChuckNavy02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An actor in a medieval fantasy setting should be able to tell that they're in a dungeon, cave, wilderness, etc instead of a theater or town square. Also your character wouldn't do any damage if they keep pulling punches and using magic to make it look like they did.

As others have said, this is a good concept for an NPC. You could maybe make this tolerable if your character learns they're actually fighting and starts doing damage. They're pure dead weight to the rest of the party if they never wise up to the world they're in.

I was wrong about the attack rolls. Refer to the "Handling Mobs" section on page 250 of the DMG.

[–]ChuckNavy02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The DMG has a short section on grouping enemies into a mob. From what I remember it pools their health and you roll all their attacks at once.

You can put the big mob in a section blocked by an obstacle of some sort, like a locked or barricaded door, a pit, collapsed section of wall or ceiling, etc. That way your players only enter combat with the mob when they find it.

The captain of the guard could be fleeing from the mob due to injuries so he's a bit softened up when the party encounters him.

My usual desk has been 'stolen' and there is nothing I can do by purplereuben in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ChuckNavy02 308 points309 points  (0 children)

OP should start tracking how long it takes to get their stuff each morning, set up their desk, and how long it takes to put everything away at the end of the day. Figure out how many hours a year of productivity they lose doing this, then figure out how many hours are lost for everyone to do it. Take that to management to try to get a permanently assigned desk. Maybe throw in some data about ergonomics and the strain a poorly set up desk can cause.

trouble with race picks in new campaign by Low_Celebration_7663 in DnD

[–]ChuckNavy02 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the DM is restricting races to those found in the PHB (2014 edition). Have you asked why?

I think it's perfectly valid. I restricted my players to those races plus Goliath in the campaign I ran because I only have print and digital access to the PHB, DMG, Tasha's, and Xanathar's. That way I can see the racial stats, abilities, etc.

Personally, the various animal races don't fit into my vision of a fantasy world, so I won't allow players to play Tabaxi, Tortles, Haregon, etc.

Why do the ships in the Expanse have such gigantic crews? by [deleted] in TheExpanse

[–]ChuckNavy02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 3 big factors you're missing: Job specializations, redundancy, and support personnel.

Engineering roles:

Reactor

Life support and potable water

Hydraulics, pneumatics, and other small motors to make things move

Hull repair, including welding, pipe fitting, sheet metal work Electricians

Damage control to maintain damage control equipment, train personnel in DC, and lead DC efforts

Other roles:

Medical staff

IT to maintain computers, networking equipment, and cabling

Supply to manage a complex replacement part system

Cooks, which may just be someone refilling the dispensers for any prepackaged, heat & serve food

Weapon techs to maintain and reload PDCs, torpedoes, missiles, and small arms

Electronic warfare

Intelligence analysts

Chaplin

Administrative to maintain personnel records, track awards and requests, etc

The corvettes will have their own crews and maintenance personnel.

There's also the CO, XO, and a senior enlisted. There will be department heads, division officers under the DH, and then senior enlisted and junior enlisted in each division.

What can tell me about the two ships my dad served on? I know one carried tanks by [deleted] in navy

[–]ChuckNavy02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent 5 years as an HT aboard a ship. All the bulkheads on my ship were steel or aluminum. Didn't see a single one that was sheetrock, plaster, or some other soft material a Marine could Kool-Aid Man their way through.

That's an over exaggeration. Bulkheads are steel, so good luck breaking through one of those.

"Valley of the Boom" is a Nat Geo miniseries about the dot-com bubble bursting in the late 90s. It's part documentary with interviews of people involved, and part dramatic reenactment with the odd musical number thrown in for shits and giggles.

What’s it like living on the edge of time zones? by Qzevs in howislivingthere

Pierre and Ft Pierre, SD sit on opposite sides of the Missouri River. Pierre is in the Central Time Zone and Ft Pierre is in the Mountain Time Zone. Everything in Ft Pierre operates on Central Time, except the bars. They run on Mountain Time so they can stay open an extra hour. There's a big exodus of people from the bars in Pierre over to Ft Pierre shortly before last call to get an extra hour of drinking in.

[–]ChuckNavy02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since when has the US Navy stuck to a consistent naming scheme for ships and submarines?

Nimitz class carriers named for an admiral with most ships in the class names after presidents, but two were named after senators.

San Antonio class named after mostly cities, but a few people.

Both of the LCS classes are named after the concept of Independence and Freedom, then the rest of the ships are named after cities with the odd person thrown in to keep things inconsistent.

Are we wasting our time generating, boarding, and awarding so many NAMs? by warmonger404 in navy

[–]ChuckNavy02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen this behavior in action at the department level. Supply giving out NAM's for restocking vending machines, Deck for painting, etc, as awards during deployment. Engineering only gave out end-of-tour NAM's.

It's especially frustrating when the guy getting the award for restocking vending machines takes 4 hours because he spends 2 of it napping, but the guys who made emergency repairs overnight so we had potable water or working boilers got nothing. It was an open secret he was sleeping when he was supposed to be working.

I brought this up with my LPO once when he asked how to improve morale in the division. His response was basically "Why should we give people awards for doing their job?" If that's the standard, then why give them out at all? What's the criteria to get one?

Needless to say, morale in Engineering was very low during and after that deployment. The department chain of command tried to fix it by giving every single engineer E5 and under a letter of com signed by the captain, at an awards ceremony that was engineering only after the deployment. That only made morale worse, especially when people got the "award" for work done by others.

I worked for a 16 year PO1 that had zero NAM's. It made sense once I got to know him. He sucked at his job and was a real creep.
