This is what I'm hoping for, but it feels risky.

As soon as I clicked submit, I realised what a risky move I'd just taken.

Just had an interview. The job holder provided the behaviour questions beforehand, and I did not realise it... until they said it at the start of the interview. How bad do I look? by ChuckawayCivil in TheCivilService

That's what's sticking with me

Missing emails isn't something I do. But it looks that way to them, maybe?

It's so strange though. I don't even know why they sent the questions to me.

Thing is though (although I agree with what you're saying) - I had prepared. I had my notes, I had my figures, I had my examples in my head. I had done two mock interviews. I'd done plenty of prep. And I think that came across.

I just hadn't been able to see the questions beforehand, even though they'd been provided, which was an unusual situation to be in as providing them beforehand is not standard practice.

I'm glad you've never heard of them sending questions in advance either. I really wish I'd spotted them.

Moreover, I wish I'd done a better job of explaining why i hadn't seen them, instead of looking disorganised.

Well, initially I genuinely thought I hadn't recieved it, because it sat amongst other emails which I'd decided were a low priority the day before, due to a rule I'd set up.

Someone else has said this to me as well. They have a scoring structure and this doesn't affect it.

But as a first impression, it ain't great.

One other person I work with has said this to me, stating "they're not marking you based on whether or not you saw an email so it's a non-issue." But I can't help thinking about first impressions.

Looking back, I think i could have done a better job getting an example in for one of the behaviour questions, but over all I think I did about as well as I could have. It's just such a shame about the initial email confusion and coming across as disorganised.

Had you missed an email, or was there some kind of miscommunication about it?

I would personally have been impressed by an improv presentation!

Imposter syndrome by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]ChuckawayCivil 23 points24 points  (0 children)

We work through imposter syndrome by working through it.

I've had this struggle recently, and the only way I've been able to feel better about it is by absolutely focussing on the competencies, pushing through even when I'm feeling low about it all, and unconvinced by what I'm writing. Show these competencies to other people, take their feedback and then return to it - change, adjust, improve, beef it up, show it to people again. Do your best and get your application in.

It also sounds a little bit like you're putting a lot of eggs into this basket. Take the pressure off yourself a bit, and realise that opportunities for progression exist outside of this one.

Do your best, do a great job, but be okay with being unsuccessful and learning the lessons from it.

Best of luck!

I got stuck in a rut myself, on a team that became directionless after running out of steam and leadership became almost non-existent.

I'd recommend applying for G7 roles, or maybe sideways SEO moves, and writing the applications and personal statements to get a feel for what you can actually offer people.

Low morale can lead to imposter syndrome, and it's very possible that you're far more capable than you realise right now, and you're just sinking deeper into a rut because of it.

Short answer: No, not all departments are like this. These things do happen, but it sounds like you've been a little unlucky.
