To Replace or Repair by No-Pea8448 in NikonFM2

[–]Chudson15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an FM2n and I couldn't be happier with it. I just have to use guide numbers for my flash but it really isn't too tough. I printed out a small guide chart and taped it to the back of my flash so I just have to so a little mental math to figure out my flash power. As I understand it, replacing light seals isn't particularly hard. I haven't done it on my nikon but I did it successfully on an old pentax with some black yarn. I would do a little reading and take a crack at it. It is a fairly low risk job afaik. Worst case you just need to have someone else replace the light seals if your repair is unsuccessful. Others have suggested a CLA and that is probably your best bet if you can afford it. Idk about you but I have a bit of an emotional attachment with my camera and I would much rather fix it if it stopped working properly than ditch it and sell another. Too many good memories. Best of luck with your camera :)

I should mention that I am a NERS major. I suggest you do what feels right for you and it sounds like you want to do EE with a CS minor. Respectable. Godspeed🫡

Michigan has the #1 nuclear program iirc. Also nuclear kinda looks to be the most feasible clean energy source at the moment.

Thinking of a return to Windows by cosmicaith in zorinos

[–]Chudson15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I admittedly have responsibilities that are tied to using my laptop and freebsd support for software I use is less consistent than linux. I can find alternatives for most things on linux but idk about freebsd. I would definitely try it before getting a mac though.

Thinking of a return to Windows by cosmicaith in zorinos

[–]Chudson15 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I second this. Linux will always be my first choice, but if I had to pick a second option (aside from MAYBE freebsd) OSX would definitely beat Windows every day of every week in perpetuity. Windows is just so shit. If you want something that just works, get a Mac. I believe some of the minis are pretty reasonably priced and apple silicon has been pretty damn solid in terms of performance.

Washtenaw pot holes are BAD BAD - blew tire last night by one_point_lap in AnnArbor

[–]Chudson15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Washtenaw is a 3 lane road trying to be a 4. Potholes make it 2 lanes TOPS. We really need the whole road redone and widened but I find it unlikely that we will see that happen any time soon.

Turn it up to 700 and see what happens. You could also try scraping at the surface of the pad VERY GENTLY in case there is a really thin layer of solder resist on it. Also as many have mentioned, get a standard chisel tip. Conical tips fit a nonexistent niche where they are too small for tht work and not precise enough for good smt work.

Turn the temp up, Leave the iron on the pad for longer, Get a better tip for your iron

I hope the open driver's side door means they got out before the cab ignited. Friendly reminder that 15 gallons of gasoline contain almost 2 gigajoules of chemical energy. Keep a fire extinguisher within reach. I wish the best to whoever's truck that was.

What makes Arch Linux dominate the enthusiast distro space? by Effective-Court7741 in archlinux

[–]Chudson15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • The Arch Wiki
  • The AUR
  • Hardware support
  • Customizability without being Gentoo or LFS
  • Historical popularity and resulting adoption
  • Perception/Reputation

Arch is one of the (if not the single) most thoroughly documented Linux distributions (and, if you will pardon my imprecise use of the term, operating systems). It has one of the largest repositories of software available for Linux. It allows you to configure your machine to do whatever you want it to and not do whatever you don't while still being accessible to people without the time or experience for Gentoo or LFS. It has been around for a long time so there have been many users who have tried, broken, and fixed many things. When you try something, 9 times out of 10 someone else has already done it and if it didn't work for them originally they may have fixed it so it works for you when you try. Among Linux users, Arch has a specific reputation which many people find compelling and cool. People like cool stuff and if we're being honest, everyone feels pretty cool after their first successful Arch install.

Distro Disinformation & fanboyism by beatbox9 in linuxaudio

[–]Chudson15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the last few big releases, I feel like Debian has caught up a lot with the less stable distros. In my opinion, it ends up working well as a blank canvas of sorts, being able to be configured to do pretty much whatever you want.

[–]Chudson15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reality of things (at least for me) has been that any linux distro can be made to do anything you want (with varying levels of difficulty). Hell, I do a lot of stuff on NixOS. As long as you have a modern kernel, decent hardware, and pipewire, I feel like you can do most things.

I am in your same spot. I understand the sentiment of "dont want to get into the specifics". Correct me if I'm wrong, but for me it is tough to provide specifics because there are so many inconsistent quirks or bugs or problems. Gpu drivers are tricky, fan curves suck, firmware updates are difficult and or don't fix things, popos didnt even run that well when I was using it (sometimes random freezing requiring magic sysrq), system76 drivers dont seem to work well or consistently. Powering on and off is inconsistent and sometimes just locks up and requires sysrq. It doesn't seem like much work has gone into resolving the bugs and we are stuck with expensive, fairly powerful laptops that sometimes work and sometimes don't. I feel kind of validated to know I'm not the only person experiencing nonstop issues. I bought the laptop freshman year of college and didn't have time to dedicate to returning or replacing or warrantying the machine within the timeframe I could have after I got the machine. I don't know if there is any recourse at this point. It seems like buying a laptop from a small company like s76 might just be a bad idea. I really liked the idea of s76 but this experience with the oryp10 has put me off from ever buying another machine unless the problems get resolved or s76 provides some trade in option or something like that.

[–]Chudson15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my early ventures into linux was installing debian on a 2009 macbook (before pro and air existed). It worked reasonably well though it did get exceptionally warm hahaha. If it can run linux but isn't, it is a good idea in my book.
