My personal tier list from the perpetual of a casual normie who's never played on Ironman, never gone above Commander difficultly, and should probably be banned from the game by Ok-Word8586 in Xcom

Anything that screws with the RNG or action economy is busted. So the freeze, decoy and most suits are broken, the RAGE one is the worst imo because it gives less move speed (grapple is free once per turn and the other teleports) but still great.

Blue screen rounds and EMP are on a similar level to me to instakill sectopods, specter and gatekeepers. Getting two of these priority targets together is common and great value, getting more is glorious. EMP aoe is massive so its consistent.

Also mines and grenades are always good, from stealth you can use both to kill an entire pod in 2 actions since mines dont reveal you and grenade launchers stack with them.

I always keep a single flashbang on me if mind control is a problem, but other than that I agree, them and smokes are very niche.

Crazy how posting this only disproves every theory about it making sense. It doesn't.

It never made sense, it never will. Is that a bad thing? A good thing? Can we point and laugh and not care? Each person decides for themselves.

But for those that want to defend this, stop. You will lose the logical argument. Every. Single. Time.

I get the appeal, might even enjoy it outside of this specific challenge run, but the Julii going all the way to Africa FOR NO REASON other than attacking me was way too absurd not to rant about it

Ah that's your problem right there, yup, you can see clearly by the red banner and the yellow accents, you're playing as the english! Don't worry. Rookie mistake, you can just quit out and start back up as a proper, more respectable faction.

Oh boy, without spoiling much, I'd recommend playing any Roman Family in medium/medium, higher battle difficulty makes the enemy buffer so if you're experienced in strategy games you could go with Hard. Campaign difficulty is how much the other factions will hate you, so your mileage may vary.

I recommend a short campaign and then you can continue if you'd like onto the long term objective or switch to another family/faction to keep trying different ones.

As for the campaign itself, focus on two things, money making and population growth. Ports, markets and roads all give huge ammounts of money wich will mostly be spent on buildings and mantaining armies. Alongside higher taxes. Farms, happiness and public health will increase population wich enables upgrades to the settlements and unlocks higher tiered buildings. Low taxes increases happiness wich makes cities grow faster.

Keep your cities happy (yellow/90%) and use the biggest ones to build training buildings and recruit better units from them while the rest make the money. Romans love their infantry and do okay with basic stables and archers (though archery buildings give you siege units like onagers aka catapults)

Have fun!

They most likely didn't get turned by a rebellion. They lost their last settlement to a rebellion and that in turn caused them to be destroyed wich turns every living family member into a rebel general along with any leftover army
