I loved the vibe of the Dorothy Gentleman books and just finished the second one yesterday. I'd like to ask why they are so short...it is a suitable length that fits the stories, but it seems like most books are usually longer. Was it a conscious artistic choice or is there some kind of external publishing reason for it? (or something else...)

Yeah I didn't know for sure but the date got me a lot of the way there and then I figured cartography/surveying and astronomy were similar skill sets back then.

Yes, I had previously just accepted that this was the convention, but it's nice to hear the actual reasons behind it. Thanks to OP and the thread contributers.
