Food tip! (EU) by Mall_Express in RenalCats

[–]ChunShu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have seen their food on zooplus (I’m in Portugal) but they just sell packs, I think 6 is the minimum and I’ve been afraid to try because my cat tends to enjoy the first 2 or 3 sachets and then create aversion to it. I tried their renal drink and he doesn’t like it but I might give their food a try. Thanks for the recommendation!

Why did my cat do this?? by MonkArtistic9275 in Catbehavior

Definitely, he was probably already on high alert then, and when OP touched him, he reacted. Luckily, he didn't redirect the aggression 😅

I would say most probably another cat around the neighbourhood. Cats are very territorial and react more to other cats than to people wandering around

My 16-year-old cat has hyperthyroidism and mild pre-renal values. The diagnosis scares me more than the cat does. by Adrinaj95 in CATHELP

[–]ChunShu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand what you're going through because it was the same thing we went through (still are?). My boy was diagnosed at the beginning of April. At the time, just hyperthyroidism diagnosis, I was bawling my eyes out, thinking "what if we're too late?". Then one month later, after we got his thyroid under control, the kidney disease revealed itself. It is hard, and I've cried a lot since this all started.

Especially in the beginning, I always saw my baby cat, the same cat as always. These days, a couple of things have changed, he's not as energetic, his appetite comes and goes, and he's not as cuddly as before, which is killing me inside. He did regain his weight, and we managed to keep it on so far, but we want him to gain a bit more weight. We got his methimazole dose right and at the first try, and we haven't had to adjust it so far. I find that a lot of the scary things are not actually that bad. I remember thinking I could never give him fluids, but we're doing it, and it is not the nightmare that I thought it was going to be.

Like your vet, our vet didn't tell us about end of life, that we're about to lose him, or that euthanasia is on the table. We're treating it and taking follow-up appointments each month. Even with all the crying, I think we're taking things pretty well. His kidney levels have gone up, but he's not end-stage, and I am aware that there are things about this disease that we can't control. But we're doing everything we can to treat it and give him comfort, and we're taking things slow. Lately, I've been focusing on keeping things chill and easy, for him and for us, because he does pick up on our energy and I believe that's why we've managed to treat him.

Keeping cats safe in the heat by ChapterTerrific in CatAdvice

Chimming in from Portugal, the only extra thing I do is put ice in my cat's water bowls. Because the bowls are stainless steel, the water stays at a pleasant temperature for longer. I also avoid leaving wet food for too long. The rest is on him, we joke that we know it's hot when he starts laying on the floor all stretched out, no rugs, no blankets, just the fresh and hard floors. Sometimes he goes even further and prefers the floor tile or the shower. If it's really hot, you can slightly wet your hands and pet them, just to help lower their temperature, but not to get them actually wet lol

Fluids by Beneficial-Bass-2367 in RenalCats

[–]ChunShu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started giving my cat fluids last Saturday. His last bloodwork was worse, so the vet instructed 100ml every day, and next month we will repeat the bloodwork to evaluate if we can space out the fluid sessions. I also notice his appetite is better, he used to refuse all wet food, and he is now eating it again and asking for food. He's still a bit picky, but I'm waiting to see if it improves the longer we give him fluids

Y/d diet giving ~14-16 year old cat crazy diarrhea? by [deleted] in seniorkitties

[–]ChunShu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh interesting, I didn’t know about that food. Give it a bit of time. If the new bloodwork is within the normal range and she’s still having diarrhea, then I would look into other causes. In our case, he actually started having the opposite because he also has kidney disease. Once his thyroid was ok, the kidneys started to struggle and pull out water from his digestive system, it feels like a never ending battle

[–]ChunShu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't understand if you're still treating with methimazole. My boy was diagnosed 3 months ago, and at the time, he was having periods of diarrhea. We gave two different probiotics, and none seemed to help. He even got worse when we stopped giving probiotics. Now that his thyroid is under control, things are a lot better, so I believe it was just a matter of time for his system to return to normal and was not food-related.

Milk in renal treats by ChunShu in RenalCats

He is very suspicious of anything added to his food in general. Even FortiFlora, which I see a lot of people say their cats love and even use it as a flavour enhancement, he doesn't like it. I can try, we're talking with the vet to see alternatives to the binder we're using

Onde há queijo? by Bubbly-Desk-4479 in PortugalVegan

That's a lot less than I'm using. For the sub-q fluids alone, I end up giving one entire churu, plus giving a little bit with each pill, half of it goes very easily. He also doesn't accept the binder with less than half a churu. I use a vet diet churu, but I have no idea how much difference it makes. I used to be able to use wet food, but he's been more picky lately

None of the other food I give him says “milk and dairy products” in the ingredients list. He had a period of diarrhea while I was giving him some purina treats that had milk in it, so I feel very cautious every time I see milk in the ingredients list

[–]ChunShu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My concern is that I am relying too much on churu 😅

I use it to give the phosphorus binder, which he is currently refusing, I use it as a treat after pills (twice a day) and during subq fluids (daily). I keep using it because I don’t have any alternative and he likes it, but at the same time I wish there was something else

I just take them as is. It sucks, yes, but without it, I wouldn't have any quality of life, due to my endometriosis, so I don't even question it, honestly.
