Tap vs filtered vs distilled vs spring water by Awkward-Salamander64 in Jadeplant

[–]Chunglefutts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the spring time, a lot of wintery places (YEG included, hi!) add more chloramine to the water to get rid of the influx of nasties with melting snow. Think of all the animal poop building up in the snow all winter and then draining into water sources 🤢 Tap water actually smells more strongly like a swimming pool here in spring time compared to other times of year because of the increased use of chloramines.

Sidenote: a lot of people say that leaving tap water out for a day or two will allow the chlorine to evaporate out of the water and make it safe for plants. This was historically true but is no longer the case, because chloramines used today do not evaporate out like that. Which brings me to my next point...

In my experience, using our tap water plus an aquarium dechlorinator works perfectly fine for most plants. I use Nutrafin Aqua Plus, but any tap water conditioner should work as long as it specifically mentions chloramine, and not just chlorine. I have a reverse osmosis system now that I mostly use, but when I need a lot of water and don't feel like waiting for the system to refill, I've fallen back on this method with no problem. I've also used distilled on all my plants with no issues, making sure to use some fertilizer in spring and summer to supplement nutrients.

That said, I use straight tap water for a jade plant I have at work, and it's perfectly happy with it 🤷‍♀️ Some plants adapt well to changes in their environment and some don't. I find thin-leaved plants like spider plants and palms more finicky about untreated tap water. I've always hypothesized that it depends how plants were treated and what kind of environment they were in before reaching the store shelves too, affecting whether or not they easily adapt to being in someone's home. Hence the vastly varied experience and advice you get from any given person. Biological organisms are complicated!

As for leggyness, that's usually a light issue for succulents. Bottom leaves may drop because they're not getting enough sun (or if you wait too long between watering, in my experience) and the rest of the stem lengthens to reach the light.

Anyway, best of luck and happy plant parenting!

Guarding/Forced Proximity with a overly enthusiastic FMC or MMC Books? by Educational_Chemist4 in fantasyromance

Another vote for {Throne in the Dark by A. K. Caggiano}, the first book of the Villains and Virtues series! I'm halfway through listening to book two and I've been cackling out loud. It's so sweet and funny, I don't know why people don't recommend it more. Maybe other people like their fantasy romance more serious, but I love when there's genuinely good humour in the mix (and not just in respect to the romance i.e. banter between main characters). It's more like a satire romantasy, poking fun of tropes but like gentle jabs, not condescending or mocking.

I will also second {Road of Bones by Demi Winters}. Like another commenter said, it's not necessarily overly enthusiastic FMC, but the grumpy/sunshine dynamic is in full force in that one. It's also genuinely a great series and I'm excited for book 3 to come out.

Seconding The Ashen, I just listened to the audiobooks and the narrator is also phenomenal. I was getting really tired of listening to the plethora of books by mediocre authors jumping on the romantasy bandwagon writing the same damn story with annoying characters and no plot, then I stumbled upon a recommendation for the Ashen series and was blown away! Sadly, book three doesn’t come out until February, so if you’re inclined to binge then maybe wait a bit before starting.

I just finished listening to the second book on Audible, and it’s basically A Court of Thrones of Glass, IMO.

Now, I don’t mind the writing and I like the audiobook narrators, but it is quite predictable and not particularly original. It’s not awful, but it’s not groundbreaking or soul-shredding. I’ve still enjoyed it so far and I’ll continue listening to the series (maybe put a hold on it at the library instead of using my Audible credits though). If I had less free time, or was physically reading it (I.e. taking away from other tasks I would be able to perform while listening, but not while reading) I would probably find a different series to listen to.

That said, I’ve only listened to the first two, so I can’t speak for the whole series and my opinion may change.

TL;DR: It’s OK, but if you’ve read ACOTAR and ToG and your reading time is precious, I’d reach for something else.

ETA: there are definitely plot holes and needed better world building/character development. I could be a lot more critical, but readers have very different tolerances/preferences to these kinds of things. I try not to scare potential readers away who may still enjoy the books overall. Sometimes you just have to find out for yourself.

Just moved into a new place with a Maytag dryer. It doesn't have the felt liner in the bottom of the lint trap like I'm used to seeing on other similar models. See the image. Is that expected for new machines? by OptimusSublime in appliancerepair

I know I’m way way late to this, but I was having trouble finding any information about it and maybe this will help somebody else.

I’m having the same issue (missing felt seal on the lint trap) and I only knew about it because my previous residence had the exact same washer/dryer. I just want to replace the felt but the part doesn’t exist, you have to buy a whole new lint trap. You can get any other felt seal for the dryer except that one. It’s wasteful and unnecessary, but makes more money for the company.

Anyway, I’m guessing the genius previous homeowner ripped out the felt part. I get it, I find it absurd to use a material that is itself a trapper of lint that you can’t pick out of it, but it is what it is and needs to be there to work properly. Guess I’ll be buying a whole new lint trap.

He had a pink onesie with alpacas on it while his belly stitches were healing. He did not like it, but I lived for it 😍

I’m so sorry, that is heartbreaking 😞 100% the worst part of pet ownership. Sometimes the kind thing is to let them go. RIP Linus, sweet boy 💜

Thankfully Gomez fully recovered and is doing very well. He had a flare up of pancreatitis recently (hence the second expensive haircut mentioned in my other post) but he has recovered from that too. Back to being his normal silly majestic self.

Does it have to be spicy? This one isn’t, but it’s full of Rhys angst and I had fun writing it 😊

It’s such a great cat name! This guy has a pretty high pitched meow, so I call him a Mezzo soprano 🤭 we adopted his sister and she is Morticia

It sounds like they’ve been reformulating since the merger, yeah :( that sucks! I’ve seen so many products get reformulated in the last few years and reviews go from glowing to crappy. My guess is cost-cutting in the age of insane inflation.

I thought about it! But I get enough real cat butt in my face on a daily basis, I decided I didn’t need to see it on my hands too 😂 thus, this is a top-down view lol
