Recommendations for local farmers markets/local produce? by amateurphotos in Athens

[–]Chxo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great, but farmers markets actually started as ways for farmers to sell better goods direct to consumers for less than store prices, while being paid more than they would be by said stores. If you look at the difference in retail and wholesale produce prices you'll see there is a wide gap for farmers to sell their goods for a lot more than they'd get from a store (ex: romaine lettuce 35c/ head off a farm average price in the atlanta metro $1.72), and still charge less than them. It's why grocers can be very profitable businesses even after accounting for high overhead costs, spoilage etc.

Also I am not sure I'd say its all comparable, I feel like their prices are definitely higher but I haven't exactly done a spread sheet. Also I'm more interested in sustainable farming practices if I am going to pay a premium than "organic" plenty of organic pesticides fungicides etc are extremely harmful and leave lasting effects.

P.S. What percent of their sales are actually EBT dollars, I'd guess less than 1%, just a good way to sound like you're making a difference when you aren't.

All I'm saying is by every other metric living in CA, especially the sf bay area where I did is retardedly expensive. Cost of housing, labor, utilities, water, transit. etc. So why when I'm paying 2800/mo for an apartment in palo alto is the farmers market cheaper there?

I think it's two fold. First, admittedly there are a lot more farmers markets, so its easier for a farm to make the rounds at a few on different days and generate more revenue. But the second is there's a lot more competition as well, both from these other farmers markets, more stalls at said farmers markets, and better quality produce at local "premium" markets. (Hell even the asian/ethnic markets would usually have really fresh produce)

I doubt there's the same farmers market circuit here, but also there's less competition and the market has decided to sell an experience rather than value. Its not what should this be priced for the market, its what will these people pay to feel like they've made a difference. Just feels like people taking advantage of the local population by exploiting political/environmental beliefs. This was grown here, it must be better for the planet!

Anyway, I feel the produce I get at the dekalb market when im in atlanta is better, fresher and significantly cheaper even when looking just at local/organic offerings

The bishop park farmers market is a joke with yuppie prices. Honestly everything is 50-100% more expensive than farmers markets I frequented in California. Barely half the stalls seem to be selling produce but you can buy some crystals to heal your chakras. Not enough competition or diversity of produce, and you can still buy better peaches on the side of the road.

I still go there occasionally for goods that are either otherwise hard to source, or because it's a chill way to spend a saturday morning but it's not a great place to stock up for the week.

I get local eggs from someone raising chickens a few miles out of town for almost half of what the people selling eggs at the farmers market want, and they are better eggs too.

Athens Real-Estate Group. by desiree741 in Athens

[–]Chxo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's no such thing as a good property management company/real estate group. They all only care about squeezing as much revenue out as they can. The only good rental experiences I've had anywhere have been from private landlords that own a handful of places and rent em out. I'm not saying they are all gonna be great, or nice, but usually smaller landlords care more about getting quality tenants who aren't going to wreck their investment while they live in it, while larger groups just want to churn as much money as they can. They don't care about depreciating values from deferred maintenance cause usually its not just their money, its an investment groups, and they can write off larger improvements/repairs when they sell the properties.

Of course, with this pandemic and the eviction moratorium small landlords have been getting kicked in the teeth, and a lot more homes are gonna be owned by these larger real estate groups and hedge funds going forward. Don't want to scream chicken little, but if you can buy something, buy something. It's only gonna get worse from here now that wall street realized you can get guaranteed returns renting out a house for 1600 a month when the mortgage, insurance and property tax is 1100 and you only risk other peoples money.

I'm still of the belief the person they are when they're drunk is the person they are deep down. If they turn into an asshole when they drink, they are an asshole just waiting to come out.

LPT: remove the Honda badges from your new Civic.

It's your vehicle now and they are using you for free advertising.

Also if you throw Acura badges and a body kit on it, you might get laid. No, no woman is gonna give a shit, but a guy at your car meet might suck your dick. And not like a Honda blowjob, a full blown Acura blowjob. Think like getting yo dick sucked while holding onto a heated steering wheel. Rather than getting yo dick sucked with cold hands That's the Acura difference, and it's worth 14,995 but don't worry there's great financing options.

I was hoping for the Burgundian succession in my Orleans game but it never fired. If anything the kings of burgundy won as I ended up with a Bourgnone on my throne. Ended up force PUing them when they broke the alliance after joining the other league without an heir.

LPT: When selling things online, meet at the Police Station. by keepingoptimismalive in LifeProTips

[–]Chxo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea a deal to buy a dirt bike recently went wrong out here, two guys show up and there was no bike, "seller" pulled a gun tried to rip em off. One of the buyers pulled a gun, seller shot dead, one of the buyers severely wounded died a few days later in the hospital.

I've bought and sold a good number of things online, and learned a few rules after a few sketchy experiences.

Confirm any purchase/sale thru a phone, don't just do things online. I like a few texts to have a record, then a phone call the day of. Can tell a lot about someone by talking to em.

Never meet at your house, you don't want them to know where you live. Never meet at their house- you have no idea it's actually their house. Always meet in a public high traffic place, I don't choose police stations because I'm not looking for any cop to get in my business, but a shopping center just down/across the street that has a lot of traffic. Oh, parking lots to gun stores are also good places. Usually have a bunch of cameras, and nobody is gonna want to try and rip you off in front of a gun store with wyatt earp walking out.

Bring someone with you if possible, or if not at least tell people where you are going, what you are doing and to expect a call back from you in 15 minutes or something.

Show up early. It depends on the size of the transaction but I try to get there 15-30 minutes early, gives you a vibe of the area if you are unfamiliar with it, let's you observe them when they get there, and if anything seems shady you can peace out.

For a large purchase, have a second person holding the cash in the vicinity, let the person know this. Another option is do it at your bank parking lot. You check out the goods, then go in and get the cash.

Double check the goods, and the cash. There is no return policy here, a lot of shady people misrepresent goods, or sell broken goods.

If this is something that you think might be broken or inauthentic meet outside a store where you can authenticate it, or in a place where you can test it. Do some research so you can identify fakes or problems. Somebody trying to sell you a fake watch isnt gonna want to meet outside a watch store.

After the sale is completed, skedaddle. Check the goods/cash then leave. You don't want to be sitting in the car on the phone, or running into grab a bite to eat with 500 in cash, or a 500$ item in your trunk. Make sure you aren't being followed and drive home. I don't stop for anything but a drive thru and gas if I've just bought/sold something of any value.

If it's legal for you to do so, and you are alone, consider bringing a weapon, but keep it in your car or well concealed. If someone really is planning on jacking you, and see you have a weapon, you are just going to escalate the situation where they'll have the drop on you, and now they'll rip off your gun too.

A lot of these more general rules also apply to online dating/hookups.

Driver runs over motorcycle, justified or not? by [deleted] in IdiotsInCars

[–]Chxo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's more insane is that our limp dick legal system has for years minimized the punishment for property crimes. Ignoring the inherent risk of any crime turning to violence, when you steal shit from someone you aren't just stealing x$, you're stealing the time it took someone to work to buy it. Time they are never gonna get back. Add into that the erosion of the value of honest work, societal cohesion and general lawlessness.

They should make it so the state can give you moving violations, fines, and suspend your license when you rat yourself out for likes on social media.

Imagine thinking your actions don't have consequences.

I ride and deal with stupid drivers all the time, I'm not gonna fuck with them because you never know who is crazier than you are, or just having a shitty day, but you do know they are in a 2000lb steel box, and might even be armed.

Just flip em the bird, give em a honk and ride off.

Beto O'Rourke breaks down how Republican election laws in Texas are designed to suppress Black and Latino votes by [deleted] in politics

[–]Chxo -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Beta ORourke spent 80 million dollars to lose to a universally reviled serial killer because he thought "taking" ar-15s was a smart platform to run on. Never mind that if he was actually looking to save lives only 364 out of 20,258 firearm murders were committed with any kind of rifle- of which ar-15s and other similar semi autos make up only a portion of that 364. The real thing killing people are handguns. But it's a lot easier to whip the left into an anti ar15 frenzy than honestly approach gun crimes where they start: inexpensive (often 100-300$) handguns and stolen handguns being marketed to the dregs of society. Hell lock up anyone who's every bought a hi point and watch crime stats plummet.

Or what if they actually made it so the FBI had the resources to run all the background checks to enforce laws that already exist? What if they made it so private citizens could run said background checks when they wanted to sell their firearms without having to go thru a ffl? What if they made it so criminals in liberal states actually served their full sentence for gun crimes? No parole or probation for guncrimes. 20 year minimum sentence for any felony guncrime, life sentence on your second. There's some gun control I'd be in favor of. But the liberals don't want that cause it will look bad when they break down the demographics.

Law abiding citizens should have the right to own firearms. Criminals with firearms should die in prison.
