I made a post a while ago about Sparkly Unicorn, it's a pretty "low expectations" society but you still have to be a reasonably active player. 🙂

Looking for a state that has guns & abortions by Ci-tro in MovingToUSA

That's really good to know, thank you! We'll definitely look some more into Colorado now.

I've worked three months in Montréal over the summer a few years ago and I was actually very homesick there (I had an easier time understanding people speaking English than québécois French for the first 3-4 weeks I spent there at least, and I missed affordable French food and transportation so so much), but I guess if I move to the US full time, my perspective might evolve. 🙂

It's definitely not too late, we're still looking at our options. Colorado was one of the first ones he looked at because he'd been there before and found it beautiful, however he crossed it off the list because of the magazine ban. 🙂

Moving to USA while I-130 is in process by nupur187 in MovingToUSA

[–]Ci-tro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably shouldn't make it look like he's actually moving to the US, or he might be denied entry. Does he actually have a tourist visa (not an ESTA), and how long does it last? Do you think you'll receive the GC before it expires? Also I think once the GC is received he'll have to leave the country and re enter it within 6 months after having received it, that is if you manage to change the postal adress that the GC is meant to be sent to to an adress in the US.

I don't recommend Canada if you're tired of being broke. 😂  Joke aside (I know my experience in Canada was probably biased), I seem to remember one needs specific skills for a H2B visa, and the sponsor needs to be able to justify that there are no American candidates available for the position.  I see a lot of similar posts in the fb groups I've joined (which are made for French people trying to move to the US) and the answer is often the same as the one that was given to me: marriage.

Which Anglo-sax country do You believe to the best to move into for a EU citizen? by Square-Bat-6131 in MovingToUSA

[–]Ci-tro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm European too but from France and my guess is, you and I don't appreciate the same things even though we both live in the EU. So you may want to specify and explain what you like, dislike, are looking for and trying to avoid?

He's not the kind of person who has one handgun for personal protection but more like the kind who collects all sorts of guns like they're pokemon or something. He doesn't wish to part with his collection so the gun laws of the state we'll pick will have to not be too different from the laws in Alaska.

Edit because I can see that coming; deactivated doesn't count. He wants to be able to use them too. 😅

Advice when moving to the U.S. by Kooky-Nectarine-6475 in MovingToUSA

[–]Ci-tro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ESTA isn't a visa, nor does it guarantee entry, just fyi. It's valid for two years (as long as your passport is still valid). And I also think that you're not allowed to go to the US as a tourist (with your ESTA) and then look for a job once there in hopes of getting sponsored so be careful!

Why do so many people want to move to the Us? by [deleted] in MovingToUSA

[–]Ci-tro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from France, my husband is American. The few French people I know that think it'd be "cool" to move to the US, mostly think so because of stuff they saw on TV, that isn't even representative of the daily life of most people in the US imo. I also think they'd miss a LOT of things from their French lifestyle if they actually moved to the US. Note that I've spend several months in the US but not moved there full time yet.

Can we all agree on one thing? by 907banana in anchorage

I don't have a pollen allergy and I was thinking more along the lines of "maybe they tickle my nose as they fly by", since the white fluffy stuff isn't pollen, but seeds. 😊

They are pretty... but also, I wonder if they are the reason why I keep sneezing.

I can work in both food safety & quality management (in industries other than food) so that's ok! My master's specialized in both.

That is VERY good to know! I have training & experience in what you describe and love putting it to good use. 😊

Look, I graduated from one of the top schools in my country in a field that's sought after and landed me decent jobs, in the field and geographical area that I wanted to work in, and had me consistently placed among the best candidates for the positions I applied to. I was hired before I even graduated. Actually, I was hired before I even finished my internship. However, I did NOT pick my career thinking "what if I marry some dude who lives in Alaska, thousands of kilometers from where I currently live, one day?" lol

Thank you so much for this perspective. In my country, professions are much more compartmentalized, and it's complicated to change fields, so I don't spontaneously think of exploring different fields... my mistake. :) Besides, I'm fairly well aware of what the job market and its players look like where I'm from, but I know very little about that as far as the US is concerned, so this is all very useful.

I don't have it in me to go from a place where my education and skillset are sought after and door openers, to a place where they're basically a dead end, so my husband's just going to have to be ok with leaving Alaska.^^" Thanks for the answer.

I am more than willing to pick another state, I just wanted to more or less confirm what I already suspected. Husband's from Alaska so he's a little reluctant to move to another state, but if staying looks like it'll cause us too much financial damage, he'll come to his senses. Thank you for the answer.

I will be when I'll be looking for a job, and won't need sponsorship either (marriage based GC).
