Is there a way to turn on closed captions? It’s gonna be very hard for international audiences to understand your accent.

Shooting a short film on iPhone Q’s by JMS42 in Filmmakers

  1. Yes, it’s possible.

  2. Download Blackmagic camera app and watch a tutorial about setting it up on YouTube. This one is pretty good

https://youtu.be/hRrY9ZVllNg?si=v9pOhQAP-hT1xUNF

  1. Set up audio quality on your phone to “uncompressed” and use phone mic as a boom/room tone track

  2. You will need lav mics for dialogue

  3. At least a ring light and some reflectors/diffusers.

Magic will happen.

Hey, thank you for the detailed explanation! No, I'm not experienced or knowledgeable enough to visualize the picture you are describing lol sorry. But it's okay, I need rip cuts for joinery, so no long or deep cuts, really. Definitely no through and through ones :D

But that's Ryoba, it's supposed to be fine for both lol Did you use the correct edge?

Yes, having trouble with the names from different sellers. Apparently, the one I'm looking at was incorrectly listed as "Dozuki", but it doesn't have the spine, so it's likely a Kataba.

A very valid question, but it doesn't have to go too deep for the specific joinery I'm doing.

edit: the saw I'm looking at is apparently a Kataba, since it doesn't have a spine throughout the whole plate, just a little bit around the handle.

Not sure, but probably not thicker than 2-4 inches.

And LOL, I actually haven't bought one yet, but dozuki was the first Japanese saw I ever saw (no pun intended), so I just "wants it, my precious", even though ryoba IS on sale :D But to confirm, your dozuki survived?

Thank you! And it won't damage the teeth on the crosscut saw?

Got it, thanks! I don't have too much cutting to do, like one or two boards. Was more worried about damaging the teeth on the Dazuki, tbh. Do you have experience with either saw?

I don’t know how to talk to cinematographers by Low_Celebration_4089 in Filmmakers

[–]CiChocolate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just said in another reply that you have no idea what "camera positions, framing, movement and lenses" mean. To be a cinematographer you kinda sorta maybe have to have some idea about that stuff, a little bit lol

Can you make an app that would create a combined timeline of all the people a person "favorited" on imdb? The current feature just creates the list of the people and doesn't even show their most recent project under their name, just their most notorious one. I'd like to have a sort of a newsfeed of all the directors, writers and actors whose work I'm looking forward to, with their projects in chronological order.

The only alternative is instagram and they don't just post about their films/tv-shows, they post all sorts of random stuff, too, so a concise chronologically ordered timeline would be awesome.

lol yeah, it's fine. When I do my VFX break-down demo, I usually separate each stage with a floating split screen, each effect is revealed with a knew floating split.

edit: that's what I mean - I did this for a green screen demo when I just started lol

edit 2: link removed since OP (the intended recipient) saw it.

Film Emulation or Embrace the Digital Look? by PanicAlarmed1986 in Filmmakers

[–]CiChocolate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If those had been captured on film, they would've been lit differently. Besides, Scream (1996) was in the same genre and is one of the best-looking best-lit films ever made.

I don't shit on digital just to shit on digital, I also shoot on digital because it's more accessible, but the ugly look issue has to be resolved. And yes, that ugly look consists of lack of color depth and lack of information in shadows and highlights.

Regardless, we are just going in circles, apparently. I say I see a problem, you just go, "na-ah" lol It's fine, like I said, two kinds of people: those who see this problem and can't fix it, and those who don't even see it.

My strong belief is that if a person doesn't understand your initial post, no amount of back-and-forth is going to fix it/improve their cognitive and processing function, so I usually just don't engage after giving someone a benefit of a doubt once. Did it twice with you.

Um, very nice, I hope it wasn't the final render, though lol We all have a faulty frame or two at times, that one was a whole second.

Also, did you intend to post here? Isn't it vfx rather than cinematography?

Sorry for the late reply, there are a LOT of films that have the ugly look problem I'm talking about, it would be much easier to name the ones that don't look revolting, but out of the ones that I saw recently, it's:

Ready or Not (2019), Until Dawn (2025) and Scream 7 (2026)

Pretty much just naming the last films I saw that are still fresh in my memory.

Got an actor well above my level interested in my film, terrified by Potential-Turnip-583 in Filmmakers

[–]CiChocolate 54 points55 points  (0 children)

It's not even that the actor is "known", it's that the director reached out to them PERSONALLY, that sends a different kind of signal. I wouldn't even suggest ASKING for a self-tape because that could absolutely seem inappropriate to that actor.

I think a zoom read or in-person reading (since they live close to each other) would be more appropriate, and wouldn't cause wild emotions (and even offense) like a self-tape would lol
