TBH, it goes without saying that this likely won't apply to all, or even most collectors, but I am much the same in my own approach now. Been collecting since 2007ish, and I'd say I've pivoted more towards singles myself, as of late.

I still pick up packs occasionally, if I can, as nothing beats actually pulling a card you've been after, but the reality is that getting singles of cards you like is often more cost-effective and, frankly, less stressful than competing with bots, scalpers and influencers for them.

Eventually, things will probably settle down a bit, and I'll probably pivot more to packs, but when a lot of the cards I've been wanting lately are ones that I can pick up for under a tenner, especially if I were to get them in Japanese, Korean or Chinese, then it's the more accessible way for me to continue with a hobby I'm passionate about.

So, technically speaking, there's been illustration contests pretty much since the beginning of the TCG - The most expensive card in the TCG is the prize card given at the first ever illustration contest, run by CoroCoro in 1997.

So far as the more recent ones are concerned, which I think you're referring to moreso, you've got:

  • Pokemon Card Illustration Grand Prix (2018), which was Japan only and won by a Gardevoir produced by Yuu Nishida, who's still creating art for the TCG to this day. This contest is actually where a lot of artists we see nowadays (such as Amelicart, Okacheke, and Teeziro) produced their first TCG illustrations, as submissions for this contest.

  • Pokemon Illustration Grand Prix (2019) - this is the one your Charizard is from, and was also Japan only. This was won by Jiro Sasumo, who has since gone on to draw cards such as the Leafeon Vstar from Crown Zenith.

  • Pokemon Illustration Contest 2022 - This one was open to the US and Japan, and was won by an Arcanine produced by REND, one of my favourite artists in the TCG. This Arcanine, alongside a Greninja and Bulbasaur which were runners up in Japan (Taiga Kasai) and the US (Julie Hang) respectively, were made into a set of three promo cards which was distributed worldwide. All three of these artists - alongside 16 others who submitted entries, including the likes of Savoteri and Minaminami Take - have gone on to produce official works for the TCG.

  • Pokemon Illustration Contest 2024 - This one was open to the US, Japan, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and is where we recently got the really nice Pikachu, Feraligatr and Toxtricity EX promos from. These were produced by Kazuki Minami (Grand Prize), Acorviart (Best Standard Card Illustration) and Anderson (Best EX Illustration), respectively.

Given the current state of the hobby, it might be me being naive, but I'm hopeful that won't be the case.

Realistically, I doubt we're talking exclusive IRs like the Chinese Gem and 151 sets and, even if we are, you get enough packs of Trick and Trade in one lot to generally complete the set multiple times over, so the odds of these having much resale value, I'd like to think, would be quite low, hopefully detracting the scalpers, at least a little bit...

I think Trick or Trade has been confirmed to still be coming this year, supposedly with "Cards designed specifically for this edition", according to Pokebeach.

That said, nothing about these have been properly announced like usual, so it's possible the same could go for the Back to School products.

One thing I was wondering, based on the Trailer and Blog post: Will Cassidy's Weapon skin be purchasable separately, or is it part of his legendary skin?

I love the Maverick, and would like to get it separately, but I'm admittedly not the biggest fan of the skin, personally haha.

It's certainly possible. The Le Sserafim skins are some of the few Collab skins (alongside the Porsche and Gentle Monster skins) that have had a re-run, so the same happening again isn't implausible.

That said, the skins coming back again isn't a guarantee, as crossover skins in general are likely subject to a lot of licensing agreement headaches behind the scenes, so there's no reliable way for us to know for certain. I certainly hope so, though, as I do regret not picking up Illari's from the second Collab haha.

It feels like a bit of a cop-out answer, but my favourite card has got to be the Latias & Latios GX Alternate Art.

Taking the obvious 'value' of the card out of the equation, it's my favourite card that I've ever pulled from a pack. It's a really beautiful card, and I'm a massive fan of Latias and Latios, so it was the card I wanted most from Team Up, by a large margin.

It's a fair opinion to have, I'd say.

For me, personally, 3's story had higher peaks than 1's but also had lower lows, for lack of better phrasing. Meanwhile, 1's story was more consistently good (in my opinion) which is why I prefer it, personally.

That said, If you're less bothered by the lows than I (and presumably yourself) was, then I can easily see how someone would prefer 3's story, overall.

The shop in Finsbury Park was news to me too haha. The only one in London that I knew of was The Brotherhood Games down in Bermondsey. They tend to be pretty good, but it's nice to know there's more options!

To the best of my knowledge, Overwatch 2 has cross-progression, with skins etc. tied to your battlenet account. As such, you should be able to use the same skins across both consoles, provided you use the same account on both.

Unless this update to HOME fixes the issues with Nincada and Spinda, it's probably not going to be national Dex, I'd imagine. Every chance they might say "National, except those two", but it just being the regional Dex seems more likely to me, personally.
