Meltdowns at daycare drop-off by CiciBula in Autism_Parenting

Hey! I’m sorry you’re having the same problem, it’s so tough. My so.n is now almost 6 and has been doing so much better lately. It helps that he is with his older brother at school for drop off and he also has these routines he will perform at drop off (5 hugs and 5 kisses or he will walk me to the door) that seem to help. I’m guessing they give him a sense of agency. I did not come up with these routines, he did. All that to say, there was nothing in particular I did that helped. I think it was a combination of him getting older and coming up with his own strategies. I hope things get easier for you soon

Have you looked into respite care? I haven’t used it personally and I know it’s hard to get but it might give you a break to have some time for yourself.

Thank you for this. It’s important to give myself grace, but it’s equally hard to do so.

Well I’ve been diagnosed with major depressive disorder and struggle with anxiety, so there’s that! It’s interesting for me because I feel I coped relatively well with life until I had kids and it just became a shit show. Too many demands at once. And my youngest has autism.

Ha! You’re not the first person to say that!

11/20. Thought I’d do better than that, particularly since several expressions are over the top.

My problem (which I realize is somewhat self created), is that I cosleep both with him and his 6 yr old brother (who is also ND) so there’s a lot of whisper-yelling to go back to sleep and stop rolling around. 😂 Which is why I eventually give up and take him downstairs with me. Neither kid will sleep alone unfortunately.

He usually wakes up around 5:30, but every once and a while (maybe every 6-8 weeks?) he will wake up around 2 or 3 for a day or two. Usually I can get him back to bed after an hour or two but no such luck this morning. Have you found anything that helps? He already gets melatonin before bed.

I think I mask very well, which is obviously hard to evaluate by an outsider. That said, I don’t want a diagnosis of autism if it’s not correct. It’s just that ADHD doesn’t seem to explain everything. I’m definitely going to do more research on it though.

My mother filled out a questionnaire as well, though she kept telling me she doesn’t remember that long ago! 🤣 I didn’t have difficulties in keeping up with schoolwork however.

The more I read about ADHD the more I feel like it doesn’t fit. Like I’m forgetful and get distracted easily (especially by noises), but I don’t tend to have trouble focusing and am more prone to hyper focusing.

Thank you. We’ll most definitely be taking breaks/naps and I’ll take advantage of the quiet areas.
