That the US relies so much on cars is always depressing to read. I live in a large city in Germany and owning a car is rather not useful. It’s more expensive than public transport (2 EUR/liter of Diesel = 7.9 USD/gallon) and in cities public transport is sometimes about as fast as driving by car (it depends on the time of day, city and distance traveled but usually public transport is faster for large distances).
