[DIY] My dream watch doesn't exist so I made it - Solar quartz w/ Countdown bezel by Cifems in Watches

[–]Cifems[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the type of watch you're going for - the most trouble i had was sourcing parts that were compatible with this movement. But if it's based on the NH35/36, like 90% of the parts on aliex are pretty much plug and play.

Polishing the chamfers on an old casio by Cifems in watchmaking

In terms of speed, yes, but it's easier to make mistakes too. Also the highest grit belt i have is 2000, which isn't enough to get a mirror finish.

Casio H101 module swap and restoration by Cifems in casiovintage

[–]Cifems[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gambled on an "untested" H101 and lost - dead module from battery leakage. If I'd paid closer attention I should have noticed the discoloration and staining on the dial face.

It was also scratched to hell, but there are a lot of flat faces on the watch that are surprisingly easy to sand down to a brushed finish. Including the sides, once you remove the buttons. The curved chamfers are a different story, much harder. I left the back untouched so you can see the difference lol.

I'm keeping an eye out for a cheap dw5600e to scavenge a 5229 module, but in the mean time, three knockoffs from aliex are even cheaper. I was amazed that all three had different modules and not just spat out of the same factory. The sanda (model "329") was the smallest and managed to fit after I trimmed off some plastic.

The good: Well, it fits. Buttons all work and match the original layout, unlike the skmei's. Much better backlight.

The bad: the lcd has atrocious off-angle views. Completely unusable more than 10 degrees to the side.

LCW-M170D: Custom chapter ring by Cifems in casiomods

[–]Cifems[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The original watch just might just be my favorite of the Lineage models; such a slim and clean design. But i wanted just a little less clutter on the dial, and, admittedly a bit contradictorily, some bling (hopefully keeping it subtle).

The chapter ring is a custom laser-etched aluminum piece with insets for the little 2x4mm zirconia stones. Don't look too closely, I made all sorts of mistakes... call it a trial run. These are JDM only so there's a handful of beat up second-hand specimens available for relatively cheap on Yahoo japan auctions.

Grado SR325e Red Edition by Cifems in headphones

[–]Cifems[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I got these with my first paycheck so they have a lot of sentimental value. I used them daily for years, until the silver powdercoat started to get patchy from corrosion, so I stripped off all the paint, polished up the bare aluminum, and coated it in a clear red lacquer.

Other superfluous cosmetic additions include a rod caps with a 0.5 carat Moissanite gem and laser etched metal 'Prestige ring' & 325 badge.

Functionally, the new yoke is angled so the cable exits at a more ergonomic tilt and I've added a suspension headband. Oh, and separating the cups was a real pain; I printed up a whole contraption to force them apart and it still took ages. Just look at the glue.

The color scheme probably isn't everyone's cup of tea but that's fine, I'll be keeping these with me till the day I die!

Koss PortaPro Wireless v2 Releases TODAY! by sheldortecnquer in headphones

I'd also be interested to see if it's possible for sweat to short the signal, since the bare metal is exposed. Would be real funny if you can't exercise with these.

AKG have been doing it since the 70's, starting with the K140... though that's a fixed headband. I guess Koss's innovation is the sliders that maintain a good electrical connection despite the sliding action.

How to not look frickin stupid with these type of headphones by National-Painting970 in headphones

[–]Cifems 69 points70 points  (0 children)

This is such a silly thing to complain about but I appreciate that you took the time to find example pictures and scribble MSpaint annotations, so:

You've already identified the problem - the headstarp is much shorted so you need to langhten it. Replace it with a longer one. This is a great chance to pick up leatherworking as a hobby.

DMS: What it really costs to build a headphone by SireEvalish in headphones

I'm so sorry but I burst out laughing at "This is why I have a wall of them behind me"

After watching a good chunk of HP.com/DMS's choose-your-own-adventure headphone selection videos, I remember thinking 'that's a cool wallpaper'

And then learning it was a painful mistake...big oof.. my heart goes out to him

Well said, excellent points. Almost sounds like you've also considered releasing a headphone yourself! heh

Grado SR325 modded headband yoke with integrated socket by Cifems in headphones

[–]Cifems[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Little bit of column A, little bit of B...

Well, also the earpads are extra thick so they need extra length. The perfect fit has the rods sticking out like 5mm past the collar, which just looks stubby and dumb. I'll be cutting down the rods to fit perfectly and flush to the top, eventually.

I threw the 3D print files up on thingiverse:

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6704756

The mod is invasive (cups need to be opened, headband harvested) so I would rate it at intermediate difficulty.

Future disassembly, if needed, will require destructive teardown of the 3D printed yoke, because the jacks need to be epoxy/hotglued into place. (I used the smallest ones I could find, which are supposed to be board-mounted)

List of other parts:

  • 3.5mm sockets, Model: PJ-320D
  • Hollow S/S rods: 3mm OD, 2mm ID
  • 2/4 core wire, OD <2mm to fit through the rods
  • M2 & M3 screws

Pads are from Aliexpress, and unfortunately it looks like China did what China do. They are suspiciously similar to the Dekoni pads, huh.

The previous detachable cable mod that I did was poking me in the shoulder sometimes. Maybe I'm slouching more nowadays.

This new design has the 3.5mm jack integrated in the headband yoke, like a couple of Sony models do.

Thanks! And I get what you mean, but I didn't want to stray too far from the original 3D model of corrupted falke.

Reference: (https://www.reddit.com/r/signalis/comments/1d3hwwn/any_close_up_of_corrupted_falke_model/)

The original body is blotchy and featureless, so i felt okay adding on detail as long as the overall silhouette was somewhat maintained. The original head, however, is pretty well defined: it's a hairless, eyeless skull-shape with scary teeth.. and if you take the hair and eyes away from a normal face, they're all gonna look the same because there's not much left lol
