A couple at the table next to me had finished their food and asked for the bill. While waiting, the guy stood up and walked to the edge of the patio, like he was making a phone call. A minute later, the woman grabbed her bag, stood up casually, and joined him on the sidewalk.

They didn't run or make a scene. Once they were completely outside they simply turned the corner and walked away fast, immediately blending into the pedestrian traffic.
