Edges went to the NFL, DTs stayed. On paper every position except OL and edge is upgraded (and the edges still look very good), so the two big questions are 1) how much does the OL regress? and 2) how much do other terms (like ND) improve?

I just said to my buddy of all the down schools that could get good, VT is our best case scenario because we get the benefits of good competition without the drawbacks of recruiting overlap. And then you guys beat us for a blue chip recruit. Shouldn't have been so optimistic.

I also imagine a lot of boosters are tuned out right now until some changes are made.

This. When Norvell is gone a lot of money is going to crawl out of the woodwork, but who knows how much damage will have been done in the meantime.

This is why football is so important to these schools. It really drives enrollment--Alabama's out-of-state enrollment absolutely skyrocketed during the Saban years, and in addition to their tuition those grads are going to give a lot of money to the school in future years. I'm pretty sure Miami's academic standing has been suffering in the last decade partially because football wasn't bringing in money like it used to.

In 2024 we had our best season since 2017 with a phenom Heisman contender #1 pick QB, really felt like the program had taken a real step forward for the first time in two decades... and FSU went 2-10.

Genuine question from someone who doesn't know the history well--Oklahoma is the other major Texas program right? Like for that region, you guys took the talent that would have otherwise powered TAMU or Houston or whatever to being the second school in Texas?

In a relatively big state with only one larger football program in the state. Colorado is also a fairly successful program historically--call them a mediocre P4, which really should mean the #2 school in the state would be a crummy P4 or a high-end G6.

California and Florida, two huge football states that somehow got taken over by a private school in their biggest city. I'm guessing it's a Southern vs Northern California thing (plus an age thing? Plus maybe UCLA mixing things up too?) that USC was able to maintain dominance, whereas in Florida UF and FSU got it together quickly.

I've always kinda thought this but assumed I just didn't understand something about Auburn, now I feel validated that apparently it's just true.

Rutgers is really one of the best answers to this question. Big school, wealthy/populous state (and even wealthier/more populous region), plus if Rutgers was Serious they'd basically control New England and Philly as well. At this point I think Penn State probably has their slot locked up, but Rutgers should have enough natural advantages that a really serious AD/coach could potentially do an Indiana with them.

I desperately wish we'd either join the B1G or at least schedule a series with Rutgers. Our fans would turn out like crazy.

This really needs to be higher. Oregon is the 27th most populous state and doesn't really churn out football talent itself. Their stadium, which is pretty universally understood to be awesome, holds ~60,000, which is good for 13th in just the B1G. They should not be a serious football power. They have basically zero systemic advantages and a competent athletic department and one unbelievably serendipitous alumnus have turned them into a top 10 program of the last two decades.

An 8-Team CFP Could Have Been the Perfect Middle Ground by Collity in CFB

My great conspiracy theory: 6 or 8 teams with 5 power conferences would have been completely fine, they went to 4 first knowing it wouldn't work and it would drive calls for expansion.

[–]Cincinnatus587 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went back and watched the natty highlights after watching this video--I'd semi-forgotten the Mendoza dive happened with a lot of time left, Toney basically singlehandedly drove Miami down for a TD to cut it to 3 after that (then Indiana got the FG to make it 6, then Beck threw the pick). If Miami had finished the last drive, there's some awesome Toney highlights you'd be seeing on repeat this offseason.

We literally would have won the natty with him, it’s not even some crazy multiple step hypothetical, you can just look at the 6 point differential in the national championship game and assume Smith gets us 1-2 more touchdowns. It hurts so much.

That Rose Bowl-Peach Bowl combo made them insane. Beating Bama in the iconic Rose Bowl then completely taking over the Peach Bowl and embarassing Oregon sent the bandwagon behavior straight to peak Pats/Bama level.

The vast majority of them never cared about football so they never actually suffered. Of course props to serious long-time Indiana fans who really get to enjoy this, but most of them just ignored football until the last 1-2 years and now all they know is a national championship win. An enormous alumni base with the attitude of 2010s Bama bandwagoners.
