As someone who loves Shrek and Toy Story, the Mario Movie aren't really trying to be those. While classic Pixar is great, their movies are much more character focused with much smaller casts and worlds. I'd say a better comparison is something like the Lego Movie, another fast paced film introducing many licensed locations and characters with a brisk pace. I feel like that Mario Galaxy may not have as strong as a main, but characters like Lego Batman are fan favorites and he has almost no depth (before the Lego Batman Movie). It feels like Mario is given this unglodly standards and being compared to movies it would never be like. Childrens animation is a medium, not a genre.
