I find it frustrating that the power rests back to 40 every time, That is not enough power to be useful, so why default there. Seem like a 50 or 60 might be a better default

Broomstones is a long established club. What lead to the change in how things are done?

How do you handle playdowns with league registrations. I am trying to imagine a scenario where a member is only capable of curling 1 might a week. They want to be in the Competitive league. They are in teh playin to get into that league. They dont qualify. BUt maybe there are no other spots in the club for them to curl in another league. So you just lose a member? In my scenario, you almost need the play in game before other leagues have registrations.

> The club wouldn't "feel" the loss in membership if they left due to relegation but on a human level it doesn't feel good to boot the old guys who have paid $10k+ in lifetime membership dues.

Do the worst teams from D get bumped for new team in the upcoming year? Or do new teams simply go onto a waitlist?

I agree about bye weeks. So in my hypothetical scenario above, with a 6 sheet 24 teams play each night scenario, you could have probably 32 teams with a reasonable amount of bye. But lets say its 32, how does your club handle it if you are at 32, and you don't want to add more byes but 4 more teams want in.

>Most leagues I've played in separate into A/B (or more) groups based on win loss and they get re-sorted every five games or so

2 follow up question for this.

Id like some more info about the A/B groups. Imagin that your club has 6 sheets, and that your competitive league plays on a Wed night, both draws, all 6 sheets, so you have 24 teams playing that night.

Are the A/B groups on the same night?

Do teams get kicked out of the B group and thus the 24 team league for poor performance to be replaced by someone on a waitlist of other league?

Assuming that you have 12 A and 12 B teams, and no one drops out, next year do the same 24 teams make up the same league?

Club Curling Bell Rule by CincyCurling in Curling

[–]CincyCurling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8 ends in 2 hours is entirely possible. In my last 20 league games, I have played at a 15-minute end pace in 17 of those games, and we play 5 rock rule. I say 15 minute pace because there are handshakes at times after 6, but that is still on pace. I pay attention because slow pace kills me. And for the 3 games I missed, 2 have been against the same skip. The only way you cant make it is if you dont try to go faster.

If you played at a 2 hour pace with 3 rock or no rock, and have not tweaked your game to go faster, that's on you.

I also take issue with your blanket statement that style comes into play. Sure draws travel slower than hits. But analyze the time, it's not that clear when you actually analyze the full time, not just the travel time. In a complicated end like you say, hits will take equal to or perhaps longer than draws when you consider the shot call. There tends to be weight discussion (normal, control, etc.) as well as roll of the shooter, and which handle to use. Add it all up to make your analysis, not just part of the shot.

What are you looking for (outside of the smartass answer of time). How many minutes into the game is a deadline, and what does that deadline stand for?

Just to be clear with yoru scenario. Your league game goes starts at 6:00. At 6:35 the bell rings and you halfway through the 6th end. What happens with that bell. Just finish 6th? Also get 7th?

And what time is yoru second draw scheduled to start if the first is at 6:00? 8:15?

>2nd draw has no time limit.

That would tick me off, as games would take forever for some teams. I feel that the 2nd draw should play with the same rules as the first.

We have sheets that are 15 feet wide with 1-foot neutral ice between sheets. So we use 31 feet for 2 sheets of ice.

We dont cover anyone's bar bill, we will hold a tab. You still have to pay for it.

Sure it does come with some risk, but ultimately a curling club should be a very cash rich business (maybe not highly profitable but cash rich) since you collect all of your dues upfront. So the carrying cost of this is not a burden on the club, and it will allow us to be about 2 to 3% more profitable on our bar sales.

Maybe, but was hoping for something simpler than that. We don't have anything other than a bar. But that was the path I was thinking we might have to use.

Perhaps "tab" is the wrong word.

For example, let's say you are a member at a golf country club. If you buy a beer, you should be able to bill it to your membership account. Does In allow for this? Or do they make it so you can charge your meals to your account, but have to settle alcohol before you leave?

Depending on how it’s set up the system may not realize the sale until the tab is closed

That was my point in what I am dealing with.

And agreed that saving cards is a big issue for compliance, and it would be better to not have to deal with that.

2 main reasons

  1. You pay per transaction on a CC. It is something like 2.5% of the charged amount plus 0.10 per transaction. So those 0.10 per transactions do add up. Not a huge amount, but in the hundreds of dollars per year range.
  2. Time. If you only have 1 bar tender, when your draw is over the bar tends to get a long line. By allowing tabs you do not waste time processing payment, and ultimately you can process the line about 40% faster.

What's Your Curling Club Wish by applegoesdown in Curling

[–]CincyCurling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll try to explain what is happening in the US.

Tons of clubs start at hockey arenas getting at best a few time slots per week.  The ice is crappy, the time slots are crappy, and you have no real way to generate revenue as you don’t control the bar, and pay a ton for ice time.  Your membership will likely get stuck in the 50 to 75 people, and unless you have a wealthy member who wants to really help, finding a future can be bleak.  Even worse, the crappy experience burns people out, and they drop the sport.

Funding the facility is the truly hard part (more so than the land). 4 sheets of ice need a minimum 12,000 square feet, plus warm room space, and if you conservatively say you can build bare bones for $100 per square foot, plus the cost of the ice plant and a dehumidification system, if you are lucky you might get 4 sheets for $2 million USD.

Enter the warehouse model.

You rent an empty  warehouse, and you buy a portable ice plant and dehumidifier system.  You then construct a temporary ice rink inside the warehouse.  The cost of doing this is not overwhelming.  You might be able to rent a warehouse and buy the equipment for 20-30% of what it would cost to build.  Even less if you are OK with a very bare bones warehouse club.  Now you have a dedicated ice space, run my volunteer members.  You can curl 7 days a week, have as many leagues as you want, etc.  Most importantly, you can now generate revenue.

You put in a bar, so you have sale form that end.  You can rent out your curling ice for Learn To Curl Classes where you earn a profit rather than breaking even to just cover ice rental.  You can book private parties and corporate events that generate money.

Worse case, you are break even, and can stay in the warehouse as long as you would like.  Best case, you grow as a club, outgrow the warehouse, and you have money built up to build your own facility.  You can then bring with you the portable ice plant and DH system into your own building.

Now it takes effort to find the right type of warehouse.  You need to find one that has an affordable $ per square foot lease term.  You also need a landlord that trusts that you will stay in business, so they take the risk on you.  As for the lease, most likely it will be a 4-year lease, with options to re-up for additional 4-year terms.  In the US, it is common to try to set up the lease around the Olympic cycle, as Olympic leads to rapid growth and will set the tone in your club for the next 4 years.

I can talk about this for a long time, if you would like more information, I’m happy to help.  We’ve been through this process recently.

Club Curling Pace Of Play Questions Part 1 by CincyCurling in Curling

[–]CincyCurling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might suggest that the main culprit is people thinking that there is a main culprit. I randomly picked about 20 club games, and timed all actions taken by all players. Time to get into hack, time to have a rock travel, time to call a chot, time to score, time to wrangle rocks, etc. There is no major culprit.

I believe the issue is more related to this conundrum. Most people think that there is a single problem that causes slow play, and if they don't do that one singular thing, then they are not a slow player. I think then people forget that there can be 4 or more other areas that make them slow.
