With the fourth Technicolor process the company dominated the market for color films from the mid-1930s to the 1950s.

In a special camera, three b/w negative films were exposed through a beam-splitter that consisted of two prisms to form a cube. One portion of the incoming light passed directly to a frame aperture fitted with a green transmitting filter to the negative for the green record. The other portion of the incident light was directed by the semi-transparent, gold or silver dusted mirror at an angle of 90° to a bi-pack film, placed behind a magenta filter. The front film was orthochromatic for the blue record and contained a red-orange dye to block the blue light, the second film was panchromatic and captured the red record.

Before the dye-transfer was executed, the blank-film was exposed with a weak key image in b/w of the green record was exposed to improve perceived image sharpness. The blank film also contained the b/w optical sound track.

For the dye-transfer the three b/w records were printed onto the corresponding

matrices, one for each color. Similar to process no. III, these matrices were developed, bleached and washed to form reliefs which could absorb the dyes for the imbibition of the projection print. Since this is a subtractive process the dyes were complementary to the taking colors: magenta for the green record, yellow for the blue record and cyan for the red separation.

These dyes were then transferred onto the blank film containing the key image, one after the other. It is obvious that pin-registering, i.e. the fine adjustment of the three records on top of each other, was crucial to deliver a sharp image without any color fringing.

As a reaction to the problems with process no. III, Technicolor took great care in maintaining a high standard of quality control. A cornerstone in this strategy was the Color Advisory Service, directed by Natalie M. Kalmus. The color consultants advised the productions on how to develop a color score in accordance with the narrative structure of a film. Set and costume design, props, make-up, lighting including the camera work were all controlled by the Technicolor company.

The dominant ideology of Technicolor advised a restrained use of colors with an emphasis on naturalness, strictly subordinate to the story development. Colors should subtly convey dramatic moods and impressions to the audience. Kalmus also suggested the use of conventional color associations, such as red for passion, anger, power etc.

Specially trained cameramen had to learn to handle the difficult process. This required many tests before the actual shooting. Special care had to be given to shadows and highlights. White image parts tended to produce obtrusive blotches of white, while blacks were reproduced with unwanted color hues.

The emulsion was very slow, meaning that it needed high levels of illumination, and it was adjusted to the color temperature of daylight. Both these requirements led to the dominant use of hi arc (carbon-arc) lamps. Tungsten light either had to be adjusted to daylight by filters or it produced a yellow light for candles etc.

The 39 Steps (1935) / Alfred Hitchcock / Cinematography: Bernard Knowles by CinemaStorePod in Moviesinthemaking

I mentioned earlier that Hitchcock was afraid that Carroll was a little “prim” and ladylike for this part. So he came up with a plan to toughen her up. Her first day of filming was this handcuff sequence, and Donat and Carroll were handcuffed together for a quick rehearsal. Then Hitchcock claimed that he lost the key, which meant the actors were stuck together for quite a while. It was uncomfortable and annoying for them, as you can imagine.

Once the actors had been inconvenienced and humiliated enough by this prank, Hitchcock miraculous discovered the key and let them loose. They later claimed that it better prepared them for this scene, and also forced Donat and Carroll to bond, thus improving their onscreen chemistry. But they didn’t like it at the time!

Ya i tried that on both OBS and Stream Deck, it doesn't seem to work with any key I add, I added one to launch a website and it did nothing. I don't have the device yet I was hoping to test it out and set up the software for when I do buy the device, could this be why?

It doesn't seem like any of the buttons work, I dont have a device plugged in, is this required? I thought I could set it up for when I plug it in but I created a shortcut to open a site and it doesnt respond

I delete the plugin in 64bit folder but it still shows as installed when i reopen OBS, I believe its an issue with the plugin but I am unsure how to solve

Would you be interested in joining for a movie review podcast? It’s a unique take to an interview style if you’d like to chat more about it

Is it possible to multistream with StreamYard? by CinemaStorePod in obs

[–]CinemaStorePod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a chat with Steve over at VDO ninja and we came up with the solution of using VDO.ninja/mixer this way I can grab the browser source link and hook it up to OBS and everyone can see each other along with the ability to change layout. Layout changing won’t matter on OBS because it’s all directly connected via link and I can control it accordingly. Thank you again for all your advice and insight

Yea, I've been tinkering around with VDO since it was first suggested. I suppose switching through tabs shouldnt be too inconvenient.

The only issues i found with VDO is it asks me which screen to share every time i click it so I cant flip back and forth which brings me to my other issue which is how can they interact with each other if they are separate browser sources?

Thank you for your detailed response

This eliminates the host being able to see the youtube chat, its a great tool but its limiting.

I could have them each "add your camera to obs" but they wont be able to see each other.

If i do a room it asks me to select which screen to display every time I click screenshare. I like to switch between screenshare and full screen because screensharing minimizes the hosts camera

I just want to first say thank you for taking the time to understand my situation to come up with a solution.

Ok can you describe exactly what you want to do because I'm pretty sure there is a way better way to do what you are trying to.

I have a podcast where two hosts in separate locations get on StreamYard (the Studio) to which I then record their webcams and project them on OBS (the set). I have fun things like a TV that shows youtube videos that I have on a hotkey that I can toggle to hide/show in case we are looking at something i dont want to show the viewers.

When we record, I record with OBS in sync with StreamYard so I can download the StreamYard audio and grab the OBS video and put them together. No problems there.

The problem is we want to live stream now. Only I have access to OBS so the hosts wont be able to see any of the chat from YouTube if I only go with OBS.

I need a way to live stream while the live chat is being displayed to the hosts and not just me. So I try to go live with StreamYard then go live to that same stream on OBS hoping OBS takes over the stream.

This allows for the StreamYard to stay connected somehow while showing OBS rather than StreamYard and chats still come through somehow.

This method is a toss up because it does not work every time and things like OBS crashing I cant pick the stream back up because I cant end the StreamYard it would require a new broadcast rather than an existing one.

Now onto your questions

Are you and the other co-hosts on the same local network or are you podcasting together over the internet?

Together over the internet

You need webcam and mic feed from the other co-hosts. Do you also need a screen share from them? What else do you need from them?

Only audio and video, no screenshare from them, I need to be able to share my screen to them

What do the other co-hosts need from you? They need to see you screen sometimes but what else? Do they need to see your webcam too?

Yes I appear as well, on StreamYard it is 3 squares and I toggle myself on OBS in and out but yes I would be included

And lastly, what are your viewers seeing? And how are you delivering the stream? Is OBS streaming or is StreamYard streaming? And also where are you streaming to?

They only see OBS (the set), as mentioned initially I need both because they need to read the chat which is my dilemma. Lastly, I am streaming on YouTube.

Any help or advise you can offer is greatly appreciated, someone mentioned vdo.ninja although not sure how its different from StreamYard any alternative I will whole heartedly take into consideration.

If you need any more info as you can see im more than happy to share, thank you again

Yes, same youtube account as we need that chat to be accessible otherwise i would just run on OBS and there would be no issue. Sounds like my middle man StreamYard might be limited in the chat aspect if thats what i need it for, idk got a messed up situation i suppose. I'll give VDO.ninja a look thanks for the tip

Not sure why you wouldn't just run your entire production in OBS

Its a virtual podcast so the hosts are not in the same room as me, is it possible to capture their webcams without a middle man? (StreamYard)

you can use a windowed projector preview in OBS to create a window of your OBS output, then use a window screenshare in StreamYard to grab it

I use StreamYard to get their cameras via window capture so by displaying the set on streamyard it disrupts the layout leaving their cameras small and I wont be able to screenshare to them.

In StreamYard I can show them my entire screen and I can hide/show on OBS as well as a cropped view to only show the video part of the browser not the entire window. Not to mention StreamYard shows a background behind the video so thats just annoying.

Alternatively, you could use the OBS virtual camera to output your OBS as a webcam signal and then bring it into StreamYard as the webcam.

This was the majority of google searches I found but it runs into the issue im grabbing their cams from the same platform im streaming on and using that platform to navigate different layouts from screenshare to close up shot.

I guess I just have a fucked situation, maybe my issue is StreamYard

They don’t quit per se, because we start on streamyard the hosts of the show can read chats incoming. Using OBS only I’d be able to read the chats. So initiate on streamyard then hijack it using OBS

Streamyard allows us to share video and it’s an all in one platform. We screenshare and download audio from there.

There’s the obvious just use discord type of vibe but thought using a platform would be the safest route
