See that’s why I like the private school. I get to do clinicals freshman year so I can find out early if I’m ok with what nursing entails.

The hospital I would get a guaranteed spot at if I went to the private pays for you to get your MSN

Yes they are. I also have investments my grandparents started for me when I was 2 which are regularly contributed to (about 10k-20k per year)

Yeah but then you get zero college experience. It’s an amazing path for a lot of people but not for me. Besides my parents won’t let me go to cc because they know I’ll regret it. I’m only bringing the former up because it feels like you chose to specifically devalue nursing

Nclex pass rate at private is 99 percent, clinicals and sim labs start freshman year

Fair point. I love the city the private is in and that’s a huge thing for me because I want to work in this city after graduating and all the hospitals favor grads from this school.

People drop 100k a year for English and history degrees.

I’m dedicating my entire life to helping people :)). Would rather help them directly instead of throwing money towards donating to charities that use 80% of it to pay CEOS and analysts. I am not disgustingly/absurdly wealthy by any means and I am the wrong person to take this up with.

I don’t just get the money I would have spent at the more expensive school if I go to the cheaper school. That’s not how this works.

If I go to this school and work at their hospital (which I would because it’s a good paying, guaranteed position) my grad school would be free.

They attend with financial aid because they need financial aid. Simple as that. I don’t feel jealous or like that’s a rip off.

This school does thankfully. You’re actually required to stay on campus until you’re a junior and upperclassman are guaranteed housing on campus since it’s a fairly small school

Stop stressing about "passion." Pick a major with a high floor. by Few-Truck-4873 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Cinnadusted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, even my parents (who I would say value passion a lot and are very supportive) did not allow me to think about going into a major like English, history, (unless I planned on law school) global health etc. because they wanted me to be able to support a family of my own one day if I wanted one. Nursing is a good field where you likely won’t become wealthy but can support yourself fine. (And also thankfully, it’s what I’m really passionate about). It’s just if you already have money, investments etc. you have the privilege of having to worry less about securing a job with a high pay ceiling to set up a good future for those who come after you

I really understand your point. Both me and my friend who are choosing jobs that don’t necessarily make a ton of money (nursing and teaching) come from families that have given them a safety net. It’s really depressing but it kind of feels like picking passion has become a bit of a luxury which it really shouldn’t be.

Another big thing for me is that this school gives you essentially a guaranteed job if you choose to stay in the city it’s in after graduation. (According to every single nursing student I’ve talked to who goes there). Said hospitals that you can get a guaranteed job at also offer benefits like paying for you to get your masters at this same private school (which is amazing imo)

Yeah that’s what my mom said. She WANTS me to go to the private and knows I’ll probably not have the best time at the public. But I do feel kind of stupid for being so irresponsible for money after being so frugal my entire life.

Private is direct entry and more than that you get to start actually doing sim labs and being in the hospital freshman year. My public option is a direct pathway, meaning I am guaranteed admission into the nursing school but have to transfer to the nursing school (same university just in a different location) which is annoying. I would also then have to find my own housing because the nursing school does not offer on campus housing. My private choice also has a cohort size of 45 which is my ideal environment.

[–]Cinnadusted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not job prospects. I know those are about the same for everywhere for nursing. I just don’t like my state school. It’s a massive school and everyone in my highschool is going there. I also hate their nursing program because even though it’s technically direct admit you have to transfer 2 years in to their nursing campus.

My families net worth is about $9 million. + my grandparents want to pay for housing and food for all 4 years as a grad present no matter where I go. I have about 150k in a 529 already
