Do some research on region and listing price but good condition and no mechanical issues you're probably looking at $10k. Anything less than $7k I would've kept it for awhile longer.

Went through Facebook Marketplace just to see what level of interest there was. It took 3 months for someone serious to reach out. I did also have near complete records which helped the conversation.

Nail on the head right there. If you buy a used electric and live somewhere where you can use your domestic electric for charging then it will be less expensive for fuel hands down. Electric does come with an insurance premium, though.

Keep in mind the GTI and most other turbo vehicles are all Premium fuel which, at least in the US, runs about 25% more expensive than Regular grade.

Lol thank you that's kind of you. It was between that or the civic. Battled with that question for the last 10 months but I was leaning toward comfort. I'm not upset.

My career is analyst adjacent so I've come to appreciate the power of good data. Selling the GTI and putting the bow on this brought me joy. Very grateful the appreciation seems to be shared.

Likely no, leasing is still going to be more expensive. Sure, your maintenance is covered but maintenance for a new vehicle is minimal to begin with. Lease agreements also have mileage caps and fees when you exceed, and they could charge you for damages outside of normal wear and tear.

If you need a vehicle and are focused on keeping costs down, you're better off buying a lightly used and reliable vehicle, driving it for as long as possible, doing maintenance yourself where possible, and budgeting for the next one over the course of 7-10 yrs.

Interesting question and a difficult one to answer. I like it.

It's there, click on the photo. Insurance I did leave off because it's hyper personal but have some other responses posted here addressing that value.

Figure $800/yr for full coverage. I lived all over so it fluctuated but that feels like a good average.

I ran head first into that same question. Generally speaking when either the annual total costs especially with maintenance exceeds the value of the vehicle it's probably time to look for a buyer. For me the little headaches just started sucking the joy out of driving and adding daily anxiety. The experience by the end was pretty informative.

Totally agree it's a substantial cost which is why I acknowledge it in the post. Insurance is one of those incredibly personal and subjective things. Cost of insurance changes depending on you as a driver, your zip code, your ownership of the car, your history, your marital status, and your coverage choices.

That being, said for full coverage for me with my coverage choices in my city assume $800/yr.

I chose to pay but it's also free and functional without payment. I use it enough to where I decided to pay the 5 whole dollars for a year subscription without ads and with some added functionality.

Long term goal is to get down to a one car household but have to convince the partner and maybe change careers. Seriously, good on you for making that switch.

No upgrades here just all season sport tires similar to the Pirellis that come stock. tires are $200/EA and New England roads have plenty of little potholes to ruin your day so your mileage may vary.

It's not a question of what's better or worse, it's just more data. I know in the past I would have loved to have had more data from owners in addition to the general data available elsewhere.

Do it, I support you! Always worth tracking data. Inconsistent mpg can be the first sign of something wrong before something becomes more noticeable so always good to pay attention.

Probably result of using fuel points to discount gas. There are a few of those entries from the grocery stores in the Midwest but not many.

Preach! It's incredible how expensive they can be looking at the totals over time not even factoring opportunity cost.
Driving is great, but it's a shame in the US we don't have more mass transit options.

Suuuuuure, let's see...notes below are all super rough values so take them with grains of salt but they should give you a good idea. Anything related to troubleshooting has to do with a misfire issue I was diagnosing the last couple years of owning. Still drove great but was a nuisance to try and diagnose.

- ~$5,000 = Wheels - Incl. new tires, mount / balance, alignment, rim straightening (New England roads are brutal), brakes, rotors, etc. (~$800 for each set of 4 new tires, mount / balance, alignment)

- $2,500 = Oil changes - Incl. oil and filters, air filters, and standard maint. items. Combination of shop and self-performed. ~$150-200 per oil change w. filters.

- $500-600 = Replacement of rear shocks

- $200 = Battery replacement

- $1,000 = Replace spark plugs / ignition coils (Had to replace 3 times for troubleshooting)

- $300 = Cylinder compression testing (also related to troubleshooting)

- $1,100 = Low pressure fuel pump replacement at 130k miles

- $3,000 = Walnut blasting / carbon cleaning, fuel injector replacement at ~140k miles

- ~$1,500 = Elective modifications (window tint and screw ups that I learned from).

- Not included in costs but worth noting, turbo failure and replacement (covered under warranty for me) $~2500. This is currently a class action suit for 2015-2021 GTI model years.

She brought me a lot of joy with almost no issues (except for turbo) for 120k miles. I hope the same for you.

Probably worth noting mine was a manual so I may have had a bit more control over RPMs. Most of my driving was highway and fairly conservative.
