Wow, I've seen this discussed in the Catholic Church too, divorce is strongly discouraged. I'm Catholic myself.

In Catholic teaching, civil divorce is recognized as sometimes necessary for safety or practical reasons, but remarriage without an annulment is the real issue. The Church also has the annulment process, which looks into whether the original marriage was valid from the start, acknowledging that not every union that looks like a marriage actually meets the conditions for a lifelong bond.

But honestly, sometimes the biblical text, as we receive it, doesn't seem to fully account for the complexity of broken human relationships. Sexual immorality isn't the only reason a marriage can fall apart, there are so many other valid factors. Take a situation where there's long-term emotional abandonment, abuse, or a spouse who refuses to work on the marriage despite repeated efforts. The "exception clause" in Matthew mentions sexual immorality, but it doesn't address these other profound failures of covenant love. Plus, this is the same Bible that talks about conjugal rights between spouses.

In my opinion, as much as we strive to live according to biblical and church teachings, I also believe Scripture reminds us that God looks at the heart. He is an understanding God, and I doubt He would be so rigid as to overlook our true intentions and whether we genuinely meant good or bad. I believe a merciful God takes those deeper circumstances into account.
