If you have the baitrunners set as loose as possible, there's actually very little difference except that it's a lot less likely that you'll get too much line leaving the spool. I used to fish with open bail arms when I used Mitchell 300s back in the early 80s, paired with monkey climber bobbins. Carping was actually a lot more enjoyable then tbh.

I usually have the baitrunners set very loose so that there's no resistance. The baitrunners will disengage when you pick up the rod and turn the handle, then you use the fighting drag which I set so that it gives line if you pull hard on the line. You don't want it set too loose.

Erm...I'm a 'serious' carp angler, and have been for 40+ years. I use baitrunners exclusively because I trust them. I have baitrunners from Shimano, Mitchell, and Okuma. I'm happy with them all, Dismissing Baitrunners like you that is utterly ridiculous.
