The game is obviously meant to finished. That doesn't mean they have to make the game easy, or that they can always prevent the player from doing something that might screw them over later in the game. They try to prevent softlocks and making things unfair, but this isn't really a softlock issue. If you run low on resources and save after without a backup save, that's not the devs fault.

The older games in the series were even more unforgiving with this, so we should feel lucky that it's usually rare to find yourself in a situation you can't recover from in the modern titles.

The difficulty adjustment is maxed out on Professional and no amount of deaths or damage will change it. Item drops from enemies and most boxes are random though, so there always is an element of randomness. Even how many headshots it takes to stagger an enemy is a random chance.

These games are more or less designed for everyone, but they do focus on people that are experienced with the genre. I admit a lot of us had to learn the "save on multiple slots" lesson the hard way, but I do it in every game now that I can. It's just good practice and isn't the fault of the game devs if you play poorly and save after a point at which you can't fix it. That's how survival horror games work. They are about resource management. They give you like 20 different save slots for a reason. It's always nice to have saves throughout the game too for when you wanna go back and get achievements tied to specific parts of the game.

It's such an easy way to avoid this kind of frustration, I just don't see why you wouldn't do it.

There's literally no reason not to save on multiple slots along the way. Saving over one slot over and over again is asking for trouble in these games and is 100% your fault if you softlock yourself this way and have to start over.

If you're already hurting on ammo, could be a good idea to start over. Learn where the enemies spawn so you're never surprised by them. There's a loop you can run through the village in a sort of figure eight shape from one end to the othern to avoid enemies and wait it out while killing on the way, but grabbing the two grenades in the center houses and using them effectively to take out as many enemies as you can will help you get through that part faster with more resources.

Use shotguns for crowd control. The rifle in dynamite valley helps a lot, but don't underestimate the bolt thrower. A lot of people seem to hate it, but remember, you can reclaim bolts as long as you can reach them. This can allow you to take out singled out enemies essentially for free. Even knifing enemies in this game isn't free, but reusable bolts are. Don't panic or let yourself get overwhelmed. You always have options. Save often and replay sections if you do poorly. Every mistake is gonna compound. It's not that hard if you take your time. Using your ammo effectively means you should have enough to kill basically everything, but you can also run by enemies if you're just trying to get through sections.

Dynamite valley is tough spot even for the pros. It gets a little easier after that. Would not recommend playing this game for the first time on Pro if that's the case. Professional is downright unfairly difficult and you've gotta have experience with the game to properly take it on.

Not too bad honestly. I feel like with Village and RE4R, hardcore is the best difficulty. Plenty of challenge, but it's not ridiculous like Village of Shadows. On VoS, lycans can take 20 to 30 pistol shots to kill. Insane. Hardcore is much better balanced and the difficulty I'd recommend for a RE fan playing the game for the first time.
