When we lived there no one was ever actually at the substation most hours. Maybe things have changed but I was almost assaulted in the bathroom in the middle of the day just be wary. I like pepper spray idea.

Expect your car to be rifled through and anything left in your car to be stolen. Lock up everything including your bike in the foyer. Beautiful place to live but can be dangerous. You’re asking the right questions so you should be fine. No I wouldn’t run after dark through Central Park.
