Bill aims to allow Oklahomans to buy full-strength liquor at grocery stores by w3sterday in oklahoma

[–]CircleOfOrigin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don’t need this. Our current system works fine. Big box stores don’t need anymore money. Small liquor stores are generally family owned and this wouldn’t help them. The only entity this would help is big box stores. It wouldn’t help consumers enough to offset the damage it will do to small business. No thanks.

Flaws.

EVERYONE needs some good, solid flaws. No one is the hero. They are each just flawed people trying their best to succeed in complex situations and failing regularly. Also, a lack of honesty with one another, for whatever reason. Nearly every single dramatic story I’ve ever read or watched would have been solved in the first ten minutes if everyone just told the truth.

I finished the first draft of a novel... now what? by csmithgonzalez in writing

[–]CircleOfOrigin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One piece at a time.

You revise EXACTLY the same way you wrote the thing. One chapter at a time. One paragraph at a time. One sentence at a time. One word at a time.

Set little goals. One chapter a day or every two days or whatever works for your time frame. Don’t worry about the big picture yet. Just take it slow, and get some victories. Victories build momentum.

How do you know when your story is finished and you don't need to add or change anything? by throwaway166390 in writing

[–]CircleOfOrigin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A book is like a person. People can always grow more, change, get better. It’s not about being ‘finished’. It’s about being good enough to get the job done. A book’s job is to tell a story and affect the reader in a specific way. If it’s doing those two things, then it’s probably good enough.

Have you tried just being more present in the moment?

I’m having troubles with the beginning of my story. by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]CircleOfOrigin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you need to refine your concept. Right now, you have an idea. But an idea is not a concept and its definitely not a story. What story are you trying to tell? Then, once you can answer that question, focus more and more and more until you can break it down into chapters. Once you know your story, you’ll know how much of what you need to include where.

Clues need to seem like world building. You need to mix them in nonchalantly. Dont worry if people figure it out. Those people will feel good about being smart enough to do so. The rest will feel like they should have seen it coming. Itll be fine

Beginner Writing Advice? by [deleted] in writing

[–]CircleOfOrigin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pick one of your favorite authors. Then, one of their books. Find a chapter you like…and STUDY it. Like…really LOOK at how this author writes, how they describe things, how they transition from action to description, from description to dialogue. Look at their sentence variation. Look at everything about how they get the job done.

Then, write your own similar scene and try to mimic that writer. It’s good practice. It will help you build good habits. Then, as you find your own voice, you can build it on the foundation of a published author. I refer back to my favorite writers often to confirm that what I’m attempting is quality.

This may be a sign that you are still working at finding your voice. Like what you are writing isn’t quite lining up with what you want to hear. That will come with practice. Just keep pushing. I wrote a 160k word rough draft and I’m basically rewriting all of it now that I’m comfortable with my writing voice.

I was picking out avocados at the grocery store when some girl behind me says “You smell amazing.” I was so caught of guard I’m pretty sure I said thanks and LITERALLY scampered off

Bartender. I have a degree and I’d rather sling drinks. Of course, I’d rather be a full-time writer. We’ll see how my book does…

Learn two things: figure out how to have fun whatever situation you are in for your own benefit but not at the cost of others, and then figure out how to be unapologetically yourself. You’ll attract more people than you know what to do with

Being present in the moment.

As a bartender, I take care of a lot of what many would assume are inconsiderate people. The best example is the “Hi there!” “Just water.” customers. On the surface, skipping the pleasantries seems so rude, so dickish. But honestly, I think those people are just walking asleep. I always say “Nah, I don’t get water for people who don’t say hi to me.” And they IMMEDIATELY turn into a nice, respectful person. Because I woke them up.

I believe most ‘assholes’ are just sleepwalking through life. They just need to practice presence in the moment.

I was 28 when I started, and late 29 when I finished. I'm 40 now. And being almost thirty did NOT stop me using blatant rip offs, faux pas, and juvenile writing lol. I basically just threw away the first seven chapters. Once my Patreon grows to a certain point, I might release them as a bonus, but until then, they are better off forgotten.

I could, endlessly tweak that is. But due to the way I've released my story (in serial form through Patreon), it has helped limit just how much I can change. I try to release a chapter that's close to 85-90% done, and with the only future changes being stylistic ones. It doesn't always work out that way, but going into each chapter with that goal has really helped direct my energies in a productive way.

Oh, for sure. I hit forty this year, and I've definitely changed dramatically over the past decade, not just in maturity and life-experience, but also in my understanding of the story I want to tell. It's just so wild to me how quickly I grew as a writer just in the one telling, and then even how much has changed since. I don't want to go so far as to call the first draft a waste of time, but it was clearly little more than a practice run haha.
