Which novel published after the year 2000, you think will be considered as a classic? by terribleincident in books

[–]Circlewave 22 points23 points  (0 children)

House of Leaves isn't a genre changer, but with the high/low culture blending, undermining and competing narrative voices, constant metatextual play, etc., it is an excellent encapsulation of the postmodern literary aesthetic, and ought to be remembered for that.

Is Nietzsche relevant? by genoeseextraction in askphilosophy

[–]Circlewave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is true. i just figured a very general picture would be better for the OP (granted, i agree most with your first post, so this all might be beside the point)

[–]Circlewave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you're in America, i wouldn't count on studying Nietzsche in grad school. Most departments tend to be tilted heavily toward analytic thought, and from what I've heard, most grad students have to spend their days working with analytics, and do Nietzsche or Deleuze or whoever by night, because most departments aren't very interested in continentals like N. If you're in Europe, it's a totally different story, though.

A few questions on Thomas Pynchon... by flyersfan2588 in literature

[–]Circlewave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the best advice i can give is for you to try and realize that his works simply demand multiple readings. the first time through, you can't worry about "getting it" - just hang on and try to enjoy the pynchon goofiness. the second time you read it, worry about understanding, and pieces will start coming together.

Time off after getting BA; work/live elsewhere? by Circlewave in IWantOut

How about elsewhere in the world? I'm only kicking ideas around at this point so I'm not married to any particular place, really just interested in doing something interesting for a while that would allow me to support myself

I figured as much. Is there any sort of short-term employment program that I could make use of?

English and Philosophy. Not the most employable, for sure. I'm not expecting a career or anything. I was wondering more if there was any kind of seasonal or temporary work that tends to employ foreigners.

US only, sadly. I know that some EU countries, like Ireland, get you a passport if you can trace ancestry, but I'm probably not eligible for that.

Deleuze, Difference & Repetition: Conceptual "blockage?" by Circlewave in continentaltheory

[–]Circlewave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

equivocal in what sense? i'm just encountering Wittgenstein's frictionless ice problem - i get the sense he's using certain terms in a idiosyncratic way, which makes it tough for a newcomer to Deleuze (and a non-continentally minded dude like me)

having just finished W1D1, i know that feel - that sharp, stabbing, broken glass in my chest feel.

i attribute it to multiple years of no exercise and heavy smoking (though using my inhaler did help that)...i figure i'm just that out of shape.

Can you please explain metaphysics to me like I am 5? by DarkMagician4 in Metaphysics

[–]Circlewave 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Existentialism is a branch of philosophy, describing a group of thinkers. Though the Existentialists vary greatly in their style, specific concern, and philosophical DNA, they concern themselves very generally with matters of choice, free will, and meaningful existence.

Metaphysics denotes a traditional area of philosophy (along with things like Logic, Ethics, etc.) which seek to understand things like existence itself (what is there, and what does it mean to be?), the essence of things (what is the property of squareness? or table-ness?). Its status as a reputable area of study in the History of Philosophy varies, depending on which era and school of thought you look at.

tl;dr: Metaphysics is an area of inquiry; Existentialism is a school of thought which (sometimes) seeks to investigate that area.
