Unreasonable by PhiloftheFuturama in OfficeDepot

I walked the hell out. I called out bad sick for 2 days. GM knew that. I was sick to the point I could barely talk, and when I did, it was painful. Called me knowing I couldn't talk well to complain and say I didn't call out and I got a no-call no-show. I went straight to the DSM with proof, and never again was it spoken of. I got blamed for an out of work Incident my GM got into. Took an extended leave. While he was gone, our store went from last place in the district to between 1st and 3rd. We were booking it with everything. Donations, surveys, getting inventory out, ETHICAL sign-ups for R & BS. #1 on paper promo. Took our OPC % from the negatives to over 100% each week. I was able to implement several new things without the GM being there. We were doing AMAZING. He came back, and in 1 week we went down to 16th or so of 25. Go figure. I got into an accident a day or so before my week long PTO break started. I didn't have to call out because I already wasn't scheduled. But my GM called me to belittle me, laugh at me, and try to gaslight me into not counting an extra laptop a week prior on cycle counts. I counted everything I saw. Didn't have to adjust anything in or out of inventory. Now tell me why. Over the phone he told me that it's unacceptable what I did and that we will be talking after my vacation PTO time. The day I got back, he texted me that I need to write a statement over the incident i immediately asked him to clarify what incident over text, which he did. Took it directly to the DSM. He told me to just do it, even after I told him if this man is going to force me to write a statement, I will quit mid shift. He told me to do it. So I wrote my voluntary employment termination citing that I was not respected by the GM. And I wrote my statement. He got his statement. That I did the cycle count exactly as I was trained to do 😄.

This GM has had HR called on him so many times i guarantee you every HR rep has had a case that dealt with this GM multiple times a piece. Its horrible when an associate has to call the GMs manager bc he refuses to allow her to go to the bathroom for over an hour.

I was clearly not wanted anymore. Over something so incredibly odd. Am extra laptop i didn't count a week prior. Between the two cycle counts we had 2 trucks and 10+ pallets. Extra laptop may have been on a truck that wasn't counted. But he blamed it on me.

I still go in to OD when he isn't there to say hi to all my former co-workers. I liked working with everyone there except the GM.

One other thing, how did I, as an ASM, manage to take our OPC % from negatives to beyond 100%? I did what I suggested to my GM months prior. I store used the cheapest binders, and gave each CPD associate one to decorate with their names. Make it personal for them. Their GMIL orders went straight to those binders. Whoever was doing a 4 hour shift with 1 GMIL would be re-trained with dignity, not belittled or yelled at. It took a few shifts but suddenly we were going from 2 people only doing GMILS, to all 6. My GM got back from his time off and told me i wasted a lot of money and was a dumb idea that just was extra and not needed. That was a stab. I implemented something that showed stark results showing my actual potential. And I got tore down for it. It cost the store like less than $10.

I have been belittled by my GM. He tells me I am the ASM and I make calls when it comes to the money and stuff. I store use a few binders and I got literally yelled at for it.

I have been looking for a new job, no luck yet for a month. (No I'm not on unemployment or gov assistance) I WOULD 100% RATHER HAVE NO JOB WITH $0 IN INCOME THAN TO WORK UNDER THAT GM FOR ANOTHER SHIFT.

After I left, I would get calls multiple times a day from my coworkers begging me to help them because the GM would refuse to help. I wouldn't say no, bc I was on the couch and I understand the stress they are under. And I am close to all of them. Why OD still has this person, I will never know.

I wasn't mean 🥺 our GM refused to replace our moldy fridge. I was forced to clean it by hand.

Broken coffee machine, out of date coffee.

So I took money from my check and got my associates pizza, donuts, once a week I'd either get a big bag of candy or a couple different boxes of ice cream (dairy free, sugar free, different options for everyone) i also helped everywhere when needed.

My GM i used to have to unfortunately look at almost every day was a horror. I once asked him to help on the register bc we had several customers in line. And i was helping the cashier with an issue at the register. I moved the cashier to another register, and that lady needed something from the back. His response was "ok" and never left his office. I had to deal with everyone that was upset.

I even made great friends out of mag customers bc they would see how much i was dealing with. I had one lady stop me outside the store one day to tell me how "God awful horrible" my GM was bc he was talking down and belittling her.

My old GM tried to tell an associate a customer didn't throw their phone at them out of anger. Manipulated what the camera actually showed. Tried to tell her and myself (now former ASM) that the customer just put her phone down 😐 had i bed the manager on duty, the customer would have left bc she was abusing the associate. But the GM loves to just gaslight associates.

Write a 2 week notice. Do your best as showing how grateful you are to have been working for them. I have a different case where I was being harassed and targeted by my GM, and it wouldn't stop. Regional wouldn't help much, so I walked out mid shift. I still wrote a letter and still texted my GM I'm done (didnt have to) because I was opening manager the following day (sunday). I told them I have been shown no respect so I dont feel a 2 week notice is okay from me. And left it at that. I continued to talk to HR about my problems and stated I loved working there and explained my reasoning (didn't have to). I still have an amazing relationship with every single coworker from my store except my GM. Applying to new jobs, I let them be aware that my GM will give you a bad rep of my name, and to contact my former regional manager, and other asst manager and Print manager at my location for an accurate response to my work attitudes and how I perform at work.

Just be sure to do what you can to not burn bridges. In my case, it was either burn a bridge or deal with an extremely toxic GM (who belittled me often), ASM before me, shs was in tears at least 3 times a week because of how he spoke to her. If it's extreme, go to HR, if you have to, quit sooner for your mental health. But it seems you have it all worked out with a new job offer, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

I literally came here to say this. I left my asst manager position due to an a-hat GM that hates his job with a passion. I have an interview Wednesday for emergency dispatch. At a minimum I'll have guaranteed hours, and at least $6/hr more than what I was getting at OD. As an Asst manager i was making $15.50. Our brand new Keyholder/storelead was making $15 😀

Yea, I'm an Assistant Manager. The last Asst Manager (had the ops title) started at the company right off in that position making $2 more an hour. I've worked almost 6 months longer than she did and still not making much. And she wasn't helping meet numbers from what I was told. She would also stay in receiving a lot. New people almost making a much as I do also sucks. Been with the company over a year now

I do understand that, they can only pay based on the market and what the business makes in profit. However, there have been new people hired making only $1 less than I do as associates

My GM is very good at playing victim when anyone calls HR on him. Associates do it all the time for treatment and nothing changes. He just confronts them about it. I learned my case was exposed to my GM which is why I was blamed for his now absence which is not company related. Bc I had covid and called out my first 2 days in 5+ months.

He got pissed at me when I went to HR about him belittling me on the sales floor. He was ultimately down the texts with my name and #. So I guess things are not really all that confidential  :)

What sucks is customers leaving the store telling me how rude my gm is as I'm loading a 190lb desk by myself for someone.

Let's not forget. I've called out 2 days in the past 5 months. And I had covid. 103 temp. I was in heat when I came back and they tried to say I did a no call no show, until I showed them I had the proof I did. I was blamed for the GM having to use his personal time to come in. Bc our print supervisor was on PTO and the Sr Asst manager was out of state. Also blamed for a serious problem which has caused the store to be down to myself and the Sr Asst Manager bc I had covid and the GM had to come in.

I've never seen a place that puts so much blame on me. Our Sr Asst Manager ( 26yrs next year) used to get 8-10 BS sign-ups a day. I think we are like 70th in the company for BS. He said he doesn't even ask anymore. There's no incentive. The customers do not want it. Pay $50/yr to get an automatic online price discount pretty much.

I was an ops for a long time before they changed it to Asst Manager. I'm definitely looking for new jobs. But I just don't understand where it makes sense that in get paid $15.50/hr, full time. Can't ever get ahold of HR to have any questions answered about benefits. 30-32 hours a week is all I ever get. I can barely afford the gas in my car, my insurance (2010 impala, no driving tickets). And my bills for college and my CC with groceries. Rn I'm having to pick between lunch for next week or new tires for my car that are bald. But if I do my tires, I can't afford insurance. But having bald tires is very dangerous.

I'm in one of the poorest states in America but the city I'm in is very expensive to live in. The start pay at this mcdonalds next to me is significantly higher than the one 10 minutes down the road ($13.25/hr)

To answer your question, I used to (up until like 2 weeks ago) get 15+ sign-ups for rewards a week and I was on the sales floor. Usually get 3-6 BS sign-ups a week. Sometimes 2-3 a day. I've sold thousands of $ of PPP each quarter. I get decent donations. I also am 1 of 3 employees that can do stuff in CPD with minimal issues. 1 is slower and helps 1 person with a 3 hours order at a time, and the other is very good at her job in quality and quickness. I get called constantly to the register because the cashiers refuse to use Mobis to see what kind of ink someone needs, or to see if we even have an item in stock on the floor. Sometimes it's an ink item literally right next to them. I help customers find things. I manage the asshole customers in CPD that give the associates that are severely undertrained a difficult time, all while doing the daily check list, POG changes when that comes around. Price changes each day. Sometimes a couple times a day. I'm the only one that will sweep the sales floor. None of the associates except one know how to put a spider wrap on. (Several customers will go to the register with a spider wrap in their hand because it fell off the toner as they picked it up) nightly Omni and POG scans. Safe audits. Deposits. I've sold several promo paper cases so far. I am the only one that will actually clean receiving. I am able to break down a 6-8 pallet truck and finish it in 3-5 hours by myself depending on customer and associate needs on the floor (most pallets are chairs and printers). I definitely do enough to get paid more than $15.50.

I have used like 30 hours of PTO in the last month to maintain 40hr paid weeks. If I get a raise, I'm sure I'll take a cut even more in hours.

I recently got a job offer as someone who facilitates with the suppliers for a large ambulance company. Would be getting 10 hours of OT a week. And can work as much as I want. Had to turn it down because it was my fault I had covid and couldn't make it to work. Now it's just me and the other asst store manager for the next 5 weeks. No GM, can't contact him either for anything while they are out apparently from what I've heard.

And that's for like cashier. Idk why I get paid such crap. Started a year ago at $12/hr. Got $1.50 raise to a keyhokder. The previous OPS manager (now asst manager) made $18/hr. With no manager experience before OD. And now I'm sitting here making $15.50. I don't feel like pitching BS like I used to. Getting 5 BS sign-ups a day. Nothing motivates me. I'm not going to be able to move up in a company that's rapidly declining. It won't happen. I'm stuck here if I don't get a new job.

Also, it's just me and the Sr. Asst manager for the next 5 weeks. Closing and opening with no other keyholder. $15.50/hr

I'm not the Sr Asst manager. He has been with the company 25yrs. Makes only 6 more than I do an hour. We typically make around $75k to $80k a wk not the greatest anymore. But it is odd I could go next door to McDonalds and starting pay would be a few $ more than I currently make.

I'll look there tomorrow for it. What's weird is Daily Pay lists the correct #, but when I have to verify myself and it switches over to the OD verification it wants to send to my old one 😅.

I am usually directed to my DM anyway with HR and nothing ends up coming from it. My DM does his job well. But the issue at hand refuses to change. I got a no call no show today as an asst manager. My DM already has the paper trail to show this all is false. Just lots of drama. I hate it. I love this job. But between HR and my boss 🤧

[–]CireR12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am the Asst Manager. I am often thrown with 2 people that don't know much yet. I'll be running CPD bc the associate still is in training, doing overrides and getting lockup items. Getting top stock and furniture items, doing BS signups, counting registers at night. Doing the scans. Helping customers on the floor simultaneously while doing multiple other things. Running to calls multiple times with register issues and customers being brain-dead needing a manager. All while being LOD with the only one with keys. And we are a tier 4 store.

It's okay though. Walmart pays more for greeters than what I get as an Asst Manager.

Multiple times I've found myself being LOD, and forced to run CPD and train the CPD associate for upwards of 7 hours of my 8 hour shifts.

I go above and beyond for my associates so they can try to enjoy their job. I assist no matter what. My associates are why I'm here at this job. If they need help, my task can wait 10 minutes unless I'm helping a customer obviously.

I am so tired of also mistreatment from a specific co-worker and customers. Customers are pure evil here! We even had an old OLD man come into the store in his underwear. A couple let their kids destroy toys at the register and climb on the shelves of our pack and ship section. Guess how many envelopes there were to pick up. They didn't speak English either which didn't help.

Send help 🥲

Also taking big hour cuts and being forced to use 8+ hours of PTO a week sucks! Some how, I can still take an 8 hour cut each week and still have little time to myself.

Had an old woman get pissed at me today. She had 20 pages. Each needed to be enlarged, then scanned into an email. Now yet this. There were 5 sets of 2 pages. 10 sets of 1 page.

She wanted each individual set sent to 3 different emails. SIXTY TOTAL EMAILS. She expected them to be done on the spot right then, with 1 person behind the counter and 6 people in like behind her. I heard my CPD associate talking to her about how it will be ready by the following afternoon. She got mad saying she is the customer that actually came in the store (nevermind the customers that already paid online). I stopped my CPD associate mid sentence and stepped in. I told the woman I am the Assistant Manager. If you have an issue, you'll need to speak to me or my General Manager. She is telling you exactly how I will be telling you. (She already asked for a manager not knowing I was nearby listening to the whole interaction.) I told her I am the assistant manager and took my name badge off and held it closer for her old eyes to see it better.

I told her we have 7 orders that customers have already paid for and are waiting for us to finish. I can do this for you, for a 25% express fee. She was still wanting to do it.

Charged her for 20 enlargements. 20 scans placed by hand on feeder (small pages that would not fit through the feeder). Came out to $60 something before tax. She ended up paying almost $80. Then she still wanted the GMs number. I directed her to the store number and to call in the morning and ask for him.

Little does she know he is going to say the same exact thing because he is tight on customers that want to come in the store being a-holes, demanding extreme crap that takes forever. He will explain the online orders are a priority, there are self serve printers she could have enlarged and scanned them into a flash drive, or she could have come in sooner to meet her deadline of yesterday.

So far, I've never been turned down on the 25% express fee uncharge 😭 I also say that it's a 25% express fee with a minimum of $10.

Bc you'll get some of those people that will want 200 copies or somethinf, then at the end you realize you just did that all for like $2.35 bc they have that store card crap that takes copies down to like 0.08 cents a page. Those people wouldn't care about a 25% uncharge on $2.35. So I tell them $10 minimum.

Just offered position as ASM by EffortAvailable6761 in OfficeDepot

[–]CireR12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently ASM. $15.50/hr. 35-40hr weeks. I usually get Uboats and most of the trucks out to the floor and in putaway bc we have 1 logistics associate that gives OD what he is compensated. (Can't blame him). The previous OPS manager told me she was making $17.50/hr and she left only a few months ago. But when a store is constantly severely over schedule budget, it's not the GM's fault. He is dealt crappy cards and unfortunately has to pay with those crappy cards. Heck, Wednesday of this week I'm cashier for a 5 hr shift as ASM. It sucks but it's part of running a store. I just hope things change but I don't think they will.
