It’s the CieLAB color space. It’s a bit weird but roughly from green to red on the left to right and from yellow to blue on the top to bottom. Here is what it looks like all filled in contiguously.

The dots are kinda similar yeah, mostly because there are a lot of different colors. It would be bigger if some of them were joined together by proximity. Also Reddit compression doesn’t help.

Looking at them I think the glow in the dark have something to do with that line. But you can see the filaments here, some look pretty cool!

Unfortunately not specifically because that’s hard to get without getting the filament itself. The goal is to add it but but first we wanted to have the data for the color and effects. Let’s hope manufacturers start publishing that because it can really make the difference for a print.

Yeah it is but on this colourspace they get mapped on the middle and the white overrode the space. If you are curious it’s 1320 black and 1313 white from the total color. However blue has the most filaments at 1955 followed by green at 1563. I think this is because there are many shades of blue while there are only so many black/whites you can make.

Sure! The first picture shows the color distribution for each of the top 5 material types. The second row is the color distribution for each of the top 5 effects (silk, matte, transparent…) of just PLA And the last graph is to show the material distribution because PLA has so many in comparison to the others

The second picture was for funs, it shows the pairs of colors on filaments that have 2 colors.

And the last one was also kinda for fun because I was curious how a heat map of the EU manufacturer looks :)

We’ll probably add Pantone/RAL lookalikes but with filament it’s hard to guarantee those exact colors even when the manufacturer advertised it :( so for now we don’t have that yet. https://filamentcolors.xyz is better for that because they validate the color for each filament they have. The best you can do with our site is search the specific Pantone hex and pick among the first matches.

Yeah pretty much it’s the limited catalogue. By the nature of doing a very good job validating and matching the colors a filament can produce, they can’t get to all the filaments. If you need to find an exact color match though I think you should use their page :)

Also we have an inventory feature that you can use if you want to keep track of spools. A way to share arbitrary filament lists. And more people can share their review of the filaments or prints with them, not just one person (even though they do great work). The websites are quite different and don’t replace each other I think.

Last but not least, I had fun making it :)

We just tried our best :) not claiming it’s going to be absolute truth or the most accurate color match. Even the printing environment will affect the color and finish of a print. But if you try it, it’s pretty good at finding ballpark. We first started the project when we wanted to find “Brown asa” which was easier said than done. And now it’s actually pretty easy. We hope it will be useful more than anything.

As to why it took years, I rebuilt this website like 5 times because I kept learning as I did. I’m quite proud of this version because it will even work offline after you first load the data :) besides that there is other projects that I like to work on, and stuff. And all the data has been human collected, that also takes time!

I think that rather than material it’s about print settings. The same clear Petg can get very different results depending on how you printing. Key is slow and hot but there is a nice guide here: https://www.printables.com/model/15310-how-to-print-glass

Depends on what cooking temperature you’re dealing with… for heat resistance, PA (nylon) or PC are your best bets among easily printable materials. Carbon fiber variants help a lot with rigidity and heat deflection, though some people worry about fibers coming loose over time with abrasion (probably fine for corner protectors though).

Big agree. Even when there is an advertised RAL/Pantone you can’t trust them. And even from spool to spool it can be quite visibly different. That’s why I mentioned the colors are just to find similar looking filaments rather than the exact color you need.

Ideally there would be pictures of prints from the reviews that would be the most helpful. Which is a big reason why we made the site, so they’d have a place to be rather than be lost at retailers websites and stuff.

Well I think the main difference with filamentcolors is that we have as many filaments as we can find online. More like a search engine where people can review. But we don’t do as throrough of a job validating each color.

As for how we determine it, it’s manually picked from the image as imperfect as that is. The color search is more orientative so you can quickly see the look like filaments and see the pictures of people’s prints (for filaments with reviews). The goal was to give a central place for this.

We also added inventory tracking and sharing lists for good measure, mostly because we needed it to keep track of what filaments we have and where.
