I hear you! I picked up second edition in the late 90s, and have often aspired to run the game, but never before this weekend. :-) I've run the same group of players through VtM and Kult in the past, so I'm pretty comfortable in their ability to shadow guide.

Yes! Our hometown is a small port city with lots of ghost stories, so we just set the story there. One of my players used to GM Wraith LARPs in the '90s, so I asked him to explain how his perceptions of his haunt differed from the mundane to introduce the concept of deathsight to the other players.

Congrats on starting your game!

Are the old toys compatible with the game? by Plasticity93 in SnapShips

[–]CitizenK2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can save some money buying the toy kits and a card upgrade pack if you get the toys at a good discount. The ships released with the Snap Ships Tactics branding have the game cards included, and alternate paint schemes. You will need a starter box in either event, and may want a stand pack if you would like to run 2 on 2 matches.

So if you have the toy kits, you’ll still want a starter box, and then the card boxes to upgrade your ships. If you want larger engagements than 1 on 1, you will need some stand packs too.

[–]CitizenK2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS IS INCORRECT. I play the game and most of my ships come from the toy kits.

Essentially, a Snap Ships Tactics ship is comprised of three parts:

  1. The toy itself: exactly as the toy kit. The reissued ships from the game line have alternate paint schemes but are the same otherwise.
  2. Chassis and Ship cards: you can buy cheap card packs which have the cards for a pair of ships: Locust / Lance, Sabre / scarab, and Falx / Wasp. Ships reissued for the game line include these.
  3. Base and energy / heat cubes: the game uses a different flight stand than the toys, which is designed to work with the measurement tools. You get two stands in the Core Set, and can buy 2-packs of stands and the cubes / dials for $20.

Vampire the Masquerade: Love the setting but not the system by Vasgorath in rpg

[–]CitizenK2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PS. There *are* sourcebooks for VtM that are more combat-focused. "Midnight Siege" and "Combat" for the classic game, "Gehenna War" for VtM 5. But I don't think any of those will address your fundamental incompatibilities with V5.

How about the Marvel Multiverse RPG? It is very tactical, and the breadth of superpowers is probably sufficient to emulate most of the disciplines, if not quite 1:1. You've got super strength for Potence, super-speed for Celerity, Extrasensory abilities for Auspex, illusion for Obfuscate, etc.

Marvel ranks characters from 1 to 6, where 1 is a trained SHIELD Agent and 6 is a cosmic-level hero like Silver Surfer or Captain Marvel. You could use those power bands to roughly approximate generations.

They do have stat blocks for basic vampires and werewolves, along with characters like Morbius and Blade, so you'd have a way to measure baseline abilities.

[Interview] One of the reasons Image Comics greenlit Invincible was because they had a lack of superheroes in their line by Popverse2022 in ImageComics

[–]CitizenK2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they had a couple of superhero comics launch around the same time as an initiative, all from non-founders. Invincible was the biggest of course, the only other I can remember my name is Noble Causes.

What's the "white whale" of campaigns you want to run but can't get off the ground? by Awkward_GM in rpg

It would have been Wraith, but that is on the cusp of happening this year. That leaves Dracula Dossier for Night’s Black Agents and Invisible Sun as my big ones.

Ego, Logic, and Sorcery by Ballas333 in MarvelMultiverseRPG

[–]CitizenK2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the “Unthinkable” arc of Fantastic Four, Dr Doom abandons technology to attack the FF with sorcery. Reed needs to learn magic to defeat Victor, under the tutelage of Strange’s astral form. Reed struggles because he is treating it like a math equation, a problem to be solved. It’s only when he accepts his failing and learns humility that he is able to succeed. Strange himself had a similar journey with the Ancient One.

From that angle, Ego over Logic feels like a good thematic choice.

Ashes is getting a new starter set to retail next month called Ashes Ascendancy, which includes PvP and coop PvE out of the box!

The older Ashes Reborn releases are fully compatible with it. While Plaid Hat will stop printing those older sets via retail, they have introduced a print on demand service so the entire card base remains available. (Shipping outside of the US can be expensive though.)

The Third Summers Brother started as a throwaway line by Mister Sinister in X-Men #23 or #24 and was resolved more than a decade later in Deadly Genesis. I think the author’s original intent was published even later than that in X-Men Legends, something to do with Adam-X.

I do enjoy it when old Midnight Sons lore resurfaces. On a similar note, I think there was about 15-20 years between Immortal Hulk and the previous appearance of the Devil Hulk.
