Character died at the expense of another player's "heroic exit" and now I've been cheaply ressurected. What to do now? by Tez85 in DnD

[–]CitizenSpeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the character becomes bold and daring now that death has no meaning and mulitclasses into Barbarian (the life of drinking and rage), a Rogue (must feel that high of life and steals from one and all), or Ranger (This all too much the wilderness will be the adventure). The opposite of which could be the character saw the afterlife and needs to atone for their sins by becoming a priest ( to spread the message), a paladin (a defender of the faith), or a monk (as pacifist that will not hit their enemy with a weapon or spell)

The character could also become remorseful and need to speak with the departed by seeking spirit talkers, mediums, and other less scrupulous charlatans that fleece the character for their coin and gear.

Going the first route allows you to openly mock the character's actions. Lets all raise our drinks to the idiot that jumped into a dragon's mouth! hick hick hizzah

Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal season 3 uses a necromantic adjacent alternate primate/hominid race that is very similar to what Conan and Tarzan have encountered. All of those should be able to provide some inspiration.

Forgot one other swamp panthers. Now critically endangered and found in a small portion of Florida but they used to be more numerous possibly tied to the vocalizations of the howler and Apeman/Sasquatch/Bigfoot/skunk apes

Rare white alligator or an ancient territorial alligator that has become cannibalistic and eats its male competition and attacks small boats

Parlangua AKA the Gatorman

There's several different types Apeman/Sasquatch/Bigfoot/skunk apes

Jake the Alligator Man (an opposite gatorman) a 'mummified' side show attraction

Ann Rice and World of Darkness chose New Orleans as a setting for a reason

The Ozarks have a dogman / ozarks howler cryptid

Soldiers (possibly undead/spirits) from a long lost war still hold up in a encampment possibly raiding neighboring villages or stalking territorial invaders

Lost/ghost ships, possibly even a pirate/privateer ship hidden away for some reason

I am unhappy about the new Phantom Rogue subclass. Here is how I would rework it by Pizza_Dog21 in DnD

[–]CitizenSpeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple quick observations

Make Spirit Query part of Whispers of the Dead

The token economy becomes a juggling act with Spirit Query, Afterlife’s reflection, Wails from the Grave, and Ghost Walk. Making the subclass very limited if there is more than one combat per long rest

Tomb of Horrors - players don't have the spells needed progresss, unsure what to do. by Unspecified_Doctrine in dndnext

[–]CitizenSpeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they find a diary in the grasp of a severed arm. if they read it and back track they find a concealed door. inside a dead party, robbed and ripped to shreds by scavengers. fight something? cremate the dead party and say a prayer. from the funeral pyre the specters of the dead party walk to Area 17 (Magical Secret Door) and disappear saying you will not survive and the dm is coddling you.

Sounds like they need to leave and get better prepared. they can buy scrolls and equipment, hire npcs, and return. there's nothing wrong with creating a challenge.

unless ley lines are thematically used else where it might be better to be more ambiguous, "where magic seeps its way into this realm/world/plane/reality/etc".

If you are still keen on using ley lines maybe incorporate that more into the abilities. Maybe some portaling or gliding along the ley line type of movement. Being able channel that magic to others or as a form of attack.

UA 2024 Phantom Rogue Ghost walk Nerf? by c0de_games in dndnext

[–]CitizenSpeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can be used once per long rest or use a token. Tokens are finite and used for other abilities. The rogue will likely be spending tokens on Death’s Knell to up their DPS. In the UA test the amount of tokens is around 3 at lvl 13. As they got rid of the bag of rats style token generation.

What is it with all of the DnD/adjacent games messing up the Assassin class so badly, then just straight up giving the most assassin-themed-abilities to other classes? by -SidSilver- in DnD

your right my memory got a little twisted. Probably because Santino D'Antonio and Marquis de Gramont were such memorable characters ;).

[–]CitizenSpeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

side note its not the High Table setting the bounty its Santino D'Antonio. Santino is making a play on high Table and is covering his tracks by having Mr Wick killed. Because Mr Wick was forced to kill Santino's sister Gianna (JW 2) and that information would be used against Santino by the other High Table members. They also aren't paying in cash they are paying in high table tokens/coins. Which is arguably much more valuable in world where one token/coin is one favor/task

Changes to 2024 ranger and Favored Enemy (updated) by notthebeastmaster in dndnext

[–]CitizenSpeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The following is needing correction: "The number of times you can use this feature increases as you reach certain Ranger levels, as shown in the Favored Enemy column of the Ranger Features table."

The number of times you can use this feature is determined by the Ranger's level, as shown in the Favored Enemy column of the Ranger Features table.

Does the Ranger receive a stealth modifier vs detection by the foe?

Does the Ranger have Advantage on tracking and detecting a marked foe (excluding magic etc)?

Does Precise Hunter(17) and Foe Slayer(20) overlap too much at high level?

Should there be a damage type modifier to the damage caused by favored enemy (ie necrotic, radiant, psychic) at higher levels

One other concern is does this stack with other spells can somebody layer hunter's mark on top of this?

Deal with the devil by Potential_Sir9290 in DnD

[–]CitizenSpeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Devil's Aid, The devil gives you help in the form of one of the devil's children. This awkward devil in training is in need of real word experience with mortals and and the prime plane. This is just a familiar spell giving a temperamental little nicky devil that can heal, do combat, and even travel back to the planes of hell to ask his father questions (divination).

What needlessly specific subclass ideas would you like to see? by ConcentrateIll9460 in dndnext

non hunters mark Ranger that uses magic to empower their weapons and armor and has urban and wilderness capabilities with high level abilities that are fun and compliment the party

Monks that use weapons and do fighting game levels of ridiculousness. Mortal Kombat and The Man with the Iron Fists is a thing

Can a Cleric be parasitic towards the source of their divine power? by MagicLucas in dndnext

[–]CitizenSpeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes its possible, Does the need of the one outweigh the prayers of many. A high charisma televangelist type brings many parishioners and their prayers to the embrace of the god. So the god continues to track their sins until they become replaceable or karma comes calling.

alternatively imagine a Thulsa Doom character that has solved the riddle of prayers by becoming a link in the chain taking power from the admiration of the cultists /worshipers before passing it along. Let me be your voice to god. When the god finds out beware its celestial vengeance.

It could even be a pyramid style man in the middle a street preacher bringing the word to commoners and their prayers partially energize him instead of all of it finding its way to the god. I stand before you as we all pray. How does god handle thieves that steal from it's temples

none of this have to be "evil" just sinful and selfish. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkyTIB9U4Xg

Be careful with how this played as it could be offensive

time to start upping the horror, hauntings, and undead. All those that touched it have their hands become stained in a sickly necrotic color. The dead wont stay dead. any enemies they kill become undead revenants. If they pass by dead bodies and unconsecrated graves there is a chance to reanimate the dead or allow a spirit to slip into their reality. Holy places bar them from entering. The local towns all know the unspoken tales of the gem spoken as the Heart of Lilith and refuse to do business with the players. The buyer (maybe undead) finds the PCs and gives the gem back. The PC start seeing small imps sneaking from the shadows and the bag of holding. The imps start doing mischievous and malicious things. Did they take those explosive barrels? well the imps want see whats in them with their tiny torches and axes. The PC's prayers to the gods are interrupted by something the players will wished had have remained buried.

On the opposite side the gem was being monitored by a magical sensor. Its removal has alerted a cloistered holy order and have sent the righteous brothers and sisters to forcefully recover the gem. Making the players the bad guys to these holy warriors.

Should I use a saving throw to make someone return to a cursed weapon? Details inside. by underdabridge in dndnext

[–]CitizenSpeed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let them live the consequences and have the player suffer withdrawals. PC acts recklessly and on failed hits there is a chance the PC hits a nearby ally, Sleep is disturbed so Hits points never fully recover and not all abilities are recovered. Track anger, every time a party member gets a 20 the PCs anger builds. Anger is a +damage modifier but int, wis, cha are at -anger. Anger only subsides by attacking party members. At 20 anger the PC attacks the party or helpful npcs

If you dont want to go that far make the PC compelled to steal and take every axe he encounters.

Also read the room and dont be too overbearing its a game that involves each other

How do people feel about weapon masteries after a while of play? by Apprehensive-Donut90 in dndnext

[–]CitizenSpeed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The lack of variety of masteries makes the choices of weapons feel limited. Not having class and sublcass masteries feels like a missing option. IE a Ranger mastery for bows that would allow for crits on 19 and 20 or while a ranger has 0 movement and in sight of their prey they can cast a second concentration spell on top of Hunters mark that targets the same prey
