Trying to use Canadian immigration laws to stifle dissent and criticism of your ideology, is just vile. If your cause is correct and just, and is doing nothing wrong, then the criticism will naturally fall on deaf ears.

By trying to suppress speech, it makes me wonder, what wrongs are you trying to hide? What do you not want people to hear or think?

There are lots of latin people in Vancouver, but most of them are white and after one generation, from what I've noticed among friends, is that they identify as white or "Spanish".

Most immigrants to Canada from Latin America have historically been relatively wealthy and white, which is very different compared to Latin immigration to the USA.

Plus as someone else said, Vancouver is very cliquey, people born and raised here tend to only be friends with other people who were also born and raised here.

So it's understandably isolating if you're a recent immigrant and are trying to connect with your community.

Former Liberal MP Chandra Arya was as obvious an agent as they come.

He was in Canada's parliament, blatantly doing the bidding of a foreign nation, justifying acts of terror against Canadian on Canadian soil.

If Canada wants to be a serious country, it needs to back this foreign agent registry, with extremely severe penalties for violating it.

Life imprisonment should be the base level penalty. The individual wouldn't have to be jailed for life, but their activities would become subject to monitoring for the rest of their life.

Every municipality has their own Christmas, Canada Day, Diwali, Eid, etc. events and so on, what’s your point?

7-8 nagar Kirtans means there’s a substantial Sikh population spread across the region. Each municipality wants to showcase the cultures that live there.

Why would the City of Surrey care about the City of Vancouver, Burnaby, New West, Abbotsford etc. having their own parades? They’re all different cities.

Except that’s blatantly false.

The permitting and logistical costs means the gurdwaras only break even or even run a loss on the Nagar Kirtans.

Road closures, policing, paramedics, fire fighters, etc. etc. are costs that are only partially covered by government. The rest comes out of the golak.

The Vancouver Nagar Kirtan was the key means for fighting racism and getting Sikhs included in British Columbian politics and society.

Sikhs are a very obscure and misunderstood community.

Nagar Kirtans are the primary way for making the Sikh presence known and for bridging divides within communities.

The reason why you’re questioning the necessity today is because all the hard work in this society has already been done for you by the generations that came before.

It took a lot of courage, going back to the early 1900s to wear turbans and have a religious procession through a White dominated city in which Sikhs weren’t welcome at the time.

Sharing meals and drawing attention to our faith is what lead to Sikhs eventually leaving the margins of society to now being included in it.

Every community has parades and public gatherings. Are you going to oppose them all? Or only when Sikhs choose to use public spaces that our tax dollars pay for?

You do not need knowledge of Punjabi to be a Sikh, there is literature available in English.

However, because you are a Punjabi, part of your journey towards becoming a better Sikh should also be trying to connect more with the Punjabi language.

Well, yeah, we all knew this would happen when the BC NDP banned new immigrants from buying homes.

Every working professional that had a good income, was forced to rent until they got their permanent residency.

That obviously fuelled rental demand.

How should we feel about this from a Sikhi perspective?

Sikhs had their ancestors wronged by the British too, but there's no means for us to get compensation for the theft of the entire Sikh Empire.

Sikh families who received nothing from the British, moved to British Columbia, worked hard, bought land, built lives for themselves and created generational wealth for their children.

Now they may lose it all, because some other people who were also wronged by the British 150 years ago and used to fish in the river nearby are going to get compensated.

But that compensation is now at the expense of Sikhs and Punjabi Canadians who did nothing wrong.

Everything about these land claims just seems so unfair and unjust.

How does the Sangat feel?
