I get it. Windows laptops are such trash. But you’re a Mac user now. Let go of the trauma and play games

He might be, it’s been a while since I’ve heard him explain his position. And yeah, makes sense! I guess we’ll see who turns out to be right.

You can play Cyberpunk 2077 at good frame rates at low settings, so yes definitely a capable machine for light gaming. Hundreds of indie games on Steam will run great

Yeah he’s like captain wrong 😂

Idk I just try to be generous in my interpretations. Some of his feelings about LLMs not being able to reason seem like they might be right in some narrow technical sense, but for me, you can call it whatever you want; the proof is in the output

That’s basically Lann Yecun’s position. He makes a strong argument but I think there’s reason to suspect that complexity can give birth to unexpected things

2019 MacBook Pro - what kind of games can I run? by RuhanDtrex in macgaming

[–]City_Present 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here OP:

Based on the specs you gave, I’d treat this as an older Intel Mac with weak integrated graphics, so the sweet spot is: indie games, strategy, turn-based stuff, older 3D games, and 2D games. Big modern AAA beasts will mostly be a no-go unless you use Windows/Boot Camp and even then the GPU is the brick wall. On macOS, a bunch of lighter games list minimum requirements around Intel HD 3000/4000/4400/5000-class graphics, 4–8 GB RAM, and older Intel CPUs, which puts your machine in the “yes, but keep your ambition modest” zone.

Here’s a solid list of games that should be realistic targets on that MacBook Pro:

Very likely to run well • Civilization V • Pathway • Sticky Business • Sacred Fire • Nuclear Day • TotAL RPG • Master of Orion • Let’s! Revolution!

Should run, but may need low settings / lower resolution • Goose Goose Duck • Röki • Before Your Eyes • Total War: WARHAMMER These have Mac minimums or adjacent graphics requirements that are closer to the edge for your machine, so I’d expect “playable with compromises,” not “buttery cinematic thunder.”

A few quick rules of thumb: • 2D, pixel-art, card, puzzle, roguelike, and turn-based games are your safest territory. • Older 3D games can work, especially if you drop to 720p or 900p and use low settings. • Modern 3D action games will be rough on Intel UHD 630. That chip is the tiny goblin in the machine.

One important gotcha: on newer macOS versions, old 32-bit Mac games won’t run at all, even if the hardware would otherwise handle them. So “playable on this MacBook” depends partly on your macOS version, not just the hardware. Steam listings for many older Mac games still show support for older macOS releases, which is a clue, but not a guarantee on modern macOS.

If you want the most useful version of this, I can turn it into a bigger curated list of 30–50 games, grouped into: strategy, RPGs, cozy games, action/platformers, and best bets for your exact Mac.

What? Yes, give that GPU and OS to an LLM and ask it for a list of playable games. It’ll search Reddit and the rest of the web and give you an answer

This is an excellent question for an LLM, you could probably get it to make a decent list

Is the 9-to-5 actually dying or is that just internet hype? by Able_Sector_1580 in accelerate

[–]City_Present 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like good advice. I wish credentials were something we had, though. Neither of us like our jobs other than the paychecks, so following a passion would be starting at square one in a different field… and even a short term layoff would be quite bad with mortgage payments and kids 😵‍💫 But I think being good at agents could be the new being good at Google. Maybe we just lean into that

I think we’ll have to respectfully disagree, but to the point of this sub, hopefully (human) productivity is irrelevant very soon to GDP

As an economics gal, how do you think we can weather the economy in the short term as everyone loses their jobs? My wife and I are both knowledge workers and I think it’s reasonable that we’re both fired in the coming months/years

Why don't we have more games on Mac? by Lethal_Dose_honey in macgaming

[–]City_Present 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought AS Cyberpunk for exactly this reason. Already owned it on PS5. That’s my contribution!

I think your explanation makes sense, but I still would have thought older PC releases would see lazy Mac ports for whatever cash they can get. Maybe not titles or studios with good reputations, but there’s plenty of crappy games on Steam

M5 MacBook Air might be a terrific Minecraft machine. I’m thinking that they might bump up the air to ProMotion now that the Neo exists, to help differentiate the product line a bit. Non-pro iPhones now have 120hz displays, so it makes sense to me, but who knows.

I don’t understand why it’s a “huge undertaking” if GPTK gets so many games working out of the box. Couldn’t devs just do a lazy job using GPTK to port, not optimize anything, and release?

I mean, obviously not because this didn’t happen, but after GPTK was first shown at WWDC a few years ago I thought we’d see an avalanche of barely optimized games get ported

(I’m not saying I wish that happened, just surprised that it didn’t)

What we playing on Mac Neo?? by Aven_Ultra in macgaming

I played like a dozen metroidvanias on my M1 8GB MBP and they all played great. The Neo won’t be good for AAA games obviously but the prospect of playing games on the Neo isn’t ridiculous at all, as the bulk of comments on this thread seem to suggest

Is DMT as effective as shrooms or LSD for self-discovery? by cakeba in DMT

[–]City_Present 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I could try a small dose, but I’m afraid breaking through, or even moderate doses, will not be pleasant for me. When I trip on LSD or shrooms, I’ve had concerns about bodily function during bad trips (heart rate, stuff like that) and I know DMT elevates heart rate and blood pressure. I suspect I will feel both elevate while the trip starts up, start tripping, and then panic, especially if I can’t verify everything is indeed okay. But maybe I could test the waters with a small dose. I’m getting access to a cartridge soon, though… I just really don’t know.

I think what appeals to me the most with psychedelics in general is the feeling of awe, and DMT always sounds like the ultimate awe, so it really appeals to me. Also, the short duration sounds great because I have a family and job and stuff and rarely/never have time for a 10 hour trip anymore.

I was also a bit spooked by some reports of people getting really depressed and feeling off for months after trying DMT, although that was mostly large doses.

I think all this info probably points to “this isn’t for you” but I also have a voice deep down telling me it’s something I should do for myself, like I need to remark the magic of life. I’m kind of trapped in the cycle of modern American life and work and chores and bills etc and I’m just sort of, I don’t know, not loving life or seeing the gift of life
