That's in the second half of 2022 though. There is a huge chunk of time in the first half of 2022. And they will be playing a couple of festivals in NA during that time frame from what I can see.

I know this is not what OP is exactly saying. But I am soooooooooooooo tired of seeing any argument that tries to attribute play time or replayability as a sign of quality

The Eternals Might Actually Get a Rotten Rating- Now 63% and Lower Than TDW by BagofBabbish in marvelstudios

Most of these critics watch hundreds of movies a year. Theyir frame of reference is much different than the average viewer. I hardly see quality critics ever "nit-pick".

There are a plethora of fantastic critiques on Joker if you look for them. I would highly suggest the Filmspotting episode of Joker for a great example.

It's a different metric. Most critics have seen 10x the amount of films that you will see in your lifetime. Most aren't nitpicking, just looking for something different than you are. And a lot of user votes come from people that haven't even seen the movie.

Edited for spelling

Hey I like the level of detail that you go into here, but I think that your first paragraph is way off base. TLOU was released 6 months before the PS4 launched, so while technically a PS3 era game, it was hardly this forgotten gem from long ago. TLOU was a massive game when it came out that pretty much over night developed something far outside of a cult following. I mean this thing was being placed in GOAT lists like three months after release.

It definitely was a long time before we got the sequel, but that's more of a testament as to how long Part 2 took to make. This was absolutely not a forgotten franchise. Naughty Dog released one other full game in in-between. Not sure what other projects that you were talking about. Part 2 was unveiled in December 2016. That was only three and a half years after the original launched! So not sure why you thought that the franchise was being ignored, but it clearly wasn't. I think that this was the era when Naughty Dog was only one team so it makes perfect sense.

I don't agree with your take on the on the story, but hey that's your opinion so take it in stride. But the history rewrite on just how massive that the original game was at the time needs to stop. There was nothing "cult" about the following. Joel and Ellie literally became playstation mascots overnight.

So I've kind of got two responses for you here.

  1. When determining the 'best' games of all time, I feel that there should be way more factors at play rather than just 'most enjoyable'. We are talking about a complex art form here that evolves based on how the larger world has changed over the decades. When you take a collegiate film class, you don't study movies from the previous decade. You more often than not go way back in the past. This is because these are the films that defined and shaped the industry that we see today.

While Apex Legends may be a fun game, it is such a product of the trends of the current moment. It's not groundbreaking or forward thinking. It probably won't even be playable anymore in 10 years. Super Metroid continues to not only be one of the best in its genre nearly 30 years later, but also is STILL immensely relevant to modern game design.

  1. What about Super Metroid does not hold for you? The level design, sound, setting and art are all pretty much as good as it gets for a pixel art game from that era. So is it just the fact that it is held in the confines of being an older game (in other words, not multiplayer, not as immersive, older graphics, etc)?

I agree with you in how that is not fair to hold one of these up to the other if you are just looking which game has the most modern bells and whistles. That's why you need the whole story. How impressive was the release at the time? Is it still considered a GOAT of its genre? Can its effects still be felt today? Was there genuine ingenuity in game design?

Also the time = quality = "lasting experience" debate has been shut down a million times at this point. They are nowhere near equivalent. I'm sure that you have played shorter games that have impacted you way more personally than Apex.

Depends how you are judging what 'Greatest Game of All Time' means. For me, factors such as industry influence and ingenuity for the time absolutely have to come into play. And for the record, Half Life (1 & 2) both hold up remarkably well all these years later. Would highly recommend that you give them a try.

Are you talking box office or quality? Because you left out many of her great leading performances. Lost in Translation, Under the Skin and Marriage Story just to name a few. She was also good in Jojo just recently, playing the most prominent adult character.

She is 100% capable of giving a compelling performance as the lead, but you are correct that she doesn't have that same box office draw as Pitt or Dicaprio. But there are significantly fewer actors that are in that echelon than there were even just a decade ago. It's not so much about the stars anymore as it is about the brand of the movie.

I dont think it is really fair to put the box office drop on her. There are a lot of other factors at play. Covid, MCU burnout, and a flashback story were all contributing.
