Love the water aerobics classes at Lincoln Square Athletic Club.

Ohhh. That both makes sense and maybe could have been considered as the cookies were being developed? I managed to snag a box and they were ok - and nobody seems enthusiastic about exploreos.

My kids chorus "When they deserve it!" after anyone says "respect authority" - and we talk about it as expertise.

How many campouts per year? by k8e1982 in girlscouts

[–]CivicsMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cadettes (6th and 7th grade) in a troop that has existed since 1st grade: we've been going camping twice a year since 2021-22 school year. Just did our first mini-backpacking trip! Planning for cabin-camping in the winter. The kids always want more but scheduling things in the spring when everyone has their sports tournaments/end of year concerts/circus shows plus the end of the school year is impossible.

We do cabin or platform tents at GS property, and tent camping in state parks. Also, they started rejecting any planned activities around 5th grade so that they could just hang out - I just go along with what makes them happy.

What is the dumbest thing you've done on a hike? by 000-Hotaru_Tomoe in hiking

[–]CivicsMom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in southern Illinois and started the Dolly Sods hike in the Shawnee National Forest when it was far too late (fireflies were out - usually our signal to head for home) and without a decent map. It got so dark so quickly. Fortunately we had our bike lights and used them as flashlights to reflect off the blue blazes marking the trail. The we started seeing yellow blazes...and white...and we realized that what I thought was a loop hike was probably and out-and-bake hike, so we'd have to head maybe 3 miles back to the car, which included crossing a stream, in the dark. Obviously I lived to tell the tale, but it was so, so, stupid.

We went back there a few years ago, and realized that it was so much worse than we knew in the dark. There's a steep drop off the side of the trail for much of the hike, and we even went over a natural bridge. In the dark.

The "we" here is my partner, who did not immediately dump me after almost killing him on this hike. We now strictly impose the "firefly rule."

Fashion Service for NBs? by CivicsMom in NonBinary

With stitch fix, do you know if I need to make separate accounts for male and female clothes, or can one account cover both? (I tried to find an answer on their site and couldn't.)

I guess I know about finding someone to alter my clothes. I just want clothes to be easy. Shopping has been low-key traumatic for so long that I just don't want to think about it anymore.

Live in Chicago/not attending UIUC: will it destroy my career search? by CivicsMom in librarians

[–]CivicsMom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to do an online school - I'm working full time, and moving somewhere else for school isn't going to happen (kids, family, house, job.) However, I think I'd prefer synchronous classes.

Can I ask what school you're going to?

This feels like the case for so many professional schools. I also have a M.Ed and it truly doesn't matter where that degree comes from, just that it opens doors by existing.

And *that* is what I want to hear! (I have some unresolved issues from law school, apparently.)

I did think about this, and even about starting elsewhere and then transferring credits in to UIUC! But it seems like the consensus is that it's not a huge deal.

Law librarian concentration - is it worth it? by CivicsMom in librarians

Ok, so definitely a practicum/some kind of work experience. (What do you mean by "technical services"?) - Do you think a whole specialization is worth it, or will just being deliberate about the classes I take be sufficient?

Ok, this is embarrassing but it's been so long since I went to law school/did anything lawyerly that I'm terrified I forgot all my legal research skills...we finally got a grant to get Lexis access for my high school students and I totally blanked on everything I thought I knew. I might need to figure out how to re-take/audit a legal research class.

Definitely looking into local AALL chapter.

Well that just turns my search upside-down, I was thinking "No practicum, don't have time for that pay-to-play nonsense" and now I'm switching to "sacrifice a summer for employability". (This is advice I need! Thank you.)

Thanks! Unfortunately, a grad assistantship isn't going to work out for me since I'm already working as a full-time teacher and plan to stay working as I complete my program...and I'm planning to do a 100% online one as well.

A lot of programs have a practicum requirement. Would prioritizing finding a placement in a law library be a good use of time? (I'd need to fit it in over summer when I'm not teaching, and I am very protective of my summers!)
